You can stream local videos in sequence to YouTube Live from Linux by feeding them to an encoder such as FFmpeg or OBS, then sending the encoded output to YouTube’s ingest address with your stream key. For a headless setup, FFmpeg plus a service manager such as systemd can keep the process running, but the folder loop, file compatibility, restart behavior and stream monitoring all need to be configured and tested on your own system.

Choose a workflow before you configure YouTube

Use FFmpeg if you want a scriptable, headless workflow. Use OBS if you prefer a graphical interface and want to manage the stream visually. Either way, the Linux machine must be able to read the media, encode it at the settings you choose, and sustain the required upload rate.

Option Best fit What to plan for
FFmpeg Headless operation and automation You must define file order, playback behavior, encoding, restarts and monitoring. The exact command depends on your FFmpeg build and media files.
OBS Studio A GUI-based workflow Configure a media source or playlist and an RTMP destination in OBS. Confirm that your installed version and chosen source settings support the playlist behavior you need; do not assume OBS will handle unattended recovery by itself.

A local Linux computer is suitable if it can stay on and has enough processing capacity and network bandwidth. A VPS is another option when you want the host to run remotely, but then you must manage the server, media files and service configuration. A project example documents an Ubuntu VPS approach, and another describes FFmpeg with systemd on small Linux hosts; these are examples, not guarantees for every machine or collection of files.

Prepare the folder and decide what happens at the end

Make playback order explicit

Do not rely on a directory listing to imply a stable order. Choose whether the videos should play alphabetically, in a hand-written sequence, or according to another deliberate ordering, and build the playlist to match. Keep filenames and paths simple where possible, and test the playlist after adding or renaming files.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check compatibility across the library

Mixed codecs, resolutions, frame rates or audio formats can complicate concatenation and transitions. Decide whether the files can be sent through without re-encoding or need to be normalized to a consistent output. Test representative files—including the transitions between them—before leaving a stream unattended. The same test should verify that every file has usable audio and video and that playback reaches the next item as expected.

Decide whether playback should repeat

A playlist that reaches its final item may stop unless your player or script is configured to repeat it. Choose the intended behavior: stop at the end, restart the list, or keep a defined playlist running. Verify the end-of-list transition during a test rather than inferring it from a process that is still running.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Check channel readiness. YouTube channel eligibility and account status can affect access to live streaming. Check the live-stream controls in YouTube Studio for the channel you plan to use; do not assume every account is already eligible.
  2. Create or select a live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream workflow and select the broadcast you intend to send to. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a live stream resource, which holds ingest configuration, from a broadcast resource.
  3. Copy the current ingest details from YouTube Studio. Use the ingest URL and stream key shown for your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder workflows. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, put it in screenshots, or expose it in logs or shell history. Use a protected configuration method appropriate to your system.
  4. Confirm that the encoder is connected to the intended broadcast. Before starting a long run, check that the selected broadcast and ingest details match. A valid encoder connection to the wrong broadcast will not deliver the result you intended.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the stream preview and stream-health indicators in YouTube Studio before relying on the setup.

Choose encoder settings YouTube can ingest

For ordinary streaming, follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for those protocols, up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio; 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that your connection can sustain the stream. The guidance page’s publication year is not stated; it was accessed on October 3, 2026. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously, allow headroom for network variation, and test for dropped frames or poor stream health.

RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS

Use RTMPS for a conventional encoder workflow unless you have a reason to use another supported ingest method. HLS is intended for particular needs, such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP; it has higher latency and materially different requirements. YouTube specifies 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges for HLS ingestion. HLS is not a drop-in substitute for an RTMP URL in an ordinary FFmpeg command.

Run FFmpeg as a continuous, supervised process

There is no single safe FFmpeg command for every folder: input formats, stream compatibility, FFmpeg build and desired repeat behavior matter. Treat any command template you adapt as a starting point, not a universal recipe. Check the options against your installed FFmpeg version and test with the actual library before using it for a long broadcast.

  1. Confirm your build and files. Check the installed FFmpeg version and inspect each representative file’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate and audio streams. Confirm that FFmpeg can decode all selected files without errors.
  2. Create and inspect an ordered playlist. Use a deliberate sequence of file paths rather than an implicit folder order. If using FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, its expected input format and the compatibility of the files must match your sources. Consult the documentation for your installed build before relying on a playlist format.
  3. Choose copy or re-encode. Stream-copying avoids a new encode but only works when the inputs and output requirements are compatible. Re-encoding gives you control over a consistent output format and bitrate, but increases CPU or GPU workload. Measure the host under the actual encode settings and check that it does not fall behind.
  4. Configure live pacing and the destination. Send the stream to the RTMP/RTMPS ingest destination configured in YouTube Studio, using the required key without exposing it in public command examples or logs. Make sure the output is paced as a live stream; an encoder that pushes a file as fast as it can read it is not the intended continuous live workflow.
  5. Test the whole sequence. Observe at least one file transition and, if the stream is meant to repeat, the transition at the end of the list. Check audio, picture, stream health and upload stability in YouTube Studio.
  6. Supervise the process. For unattended operation, a service manager such as systemd can start a process on boot and restart it after an exit. Define restart behavior deliberately, inspect service status and logs, and make sure an operator can detect a stalled or unhealthy stream. A service restart does not itself prove that YouTube’s broadcast continued or that playback resumed at the desired point.

Third-party examples describe FFmpeg under systemd on small Linux hosts and an Ubuntu VPS setup that loops local files. They illustrate possible designs; they do not establish that every file set, board or YouTube broadcast will work indefinitely. A Raspberry Pi-class host may be an option for some workloads, but its ability to transcode depends on the actual codecs, output settings and model. Test rather than assuming capacity.

Set up OBS if you prefer a graphical workflow

  1. Open OBS and add your media source or playlist. Configure the source to play the intended files in the intended order. Check the installed OBS version’s source controls for repeat or playlist behavior, then verify end-of-list handling in a test.
  2. Configure the stream destination. In OBS’s stream settings, choose the appropriate custom RTMP/RTMPS service if needed, and enter the ingest details from YouTube Studio. Keep the stream key private.
  3. Set output and video options. Follow YouTube’s codec, bitrate, frame-rate and keyframe guidance for the protocol you selected. Check that the output resolution and frame rate match what the host can encode and the connection can sustain.
  4. Start a test and inspect YouTube Studio. Confirm that the picture, audio, transitions and stream health are sound before leaving OBS unattended.

OBS provides a visual encoder workflow, but a GUI alone does not guarantee recovery after a crash, host reboot, network interruption or YouTube disconnect. Plan a separate supervision and alerting approach if the stream must run without someone watching the machine.

Meet YouTube’s content and operational requirements

  • Confirm your rights. You are responsible for having permission to stream the video and audio, including music, gameplay footage, licensed assets and other people’s material. Owning a file or finding it online does not by itself establish streaming rights.
  • Check channel and broadcast status. Eligibility and account state are unknown until checked for your channel. Review the live controls in YouTube Studio before building an unattended workflow around them.
  • Do not assume a loop guarantees monetization. A technically live stream does not establish that its content meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content rules. Review current YouTube policies for your channel and content; this workflow does not determine those outcomes.
  • Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains the stream key may be able to send an encoder feed to the associated stream. Avoid placing it in public scripts, repositories, screenshots or logs.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not receive a signal Wrong ingest address or key, an inactive or ineligible channel, or a failed encoder connection Copy the current ingest details from YouTube Studio, check the selected broadcast and review the encoder and Studio status.
Stream health reports instability or dropped frames Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, or the host cannot encode in real time Check sustained upload performance and host load. Reduce output demands or bitrate to a sustainable setting, then test again.
Playback stops after one video or at the list’s end The playlist is not configured to advance or repeat as intended Inspect ordering and repeat behavior in your chosen player, then test a complete transition through the end of the list.
A particular file fails or has missing audio Unsupported, damaged or inconsistent media streams Inspect the file’s streams and FFmpeg decode output. Convert or normalize incompatible files, then test the resulting media before adding it back to the playlist.
Service restarts but the broadcast is still absent Process recovery does not confirm YouTube ingest or broadcast recovery Check systemd status and logs, then check the broadcast’s stream health in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the process reconnected to the intended ingest details.
The stream runs but content may not be permitted or monetizable Streaming rights or policy eligibility have not been established Verify rights for every video and audio track and review YouTube’s current policies for the channel and content.
