First confirm the channel is eligible to livestream and classify the content accurately: a channel built around children’s stories is likely to be made for kids, which disables several features some creators expect to use.
Check YouTube’s live-stream requirements first
Before building the broadcast, verify that the YouTube channel is eligible to stream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also states that a person must be at least 16 to livestream. If the person operating the broadcast is younger, consult YouTube’s eligibility rules rather than assuming they can independently run it. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming; use its live-control workflow to prepare an encoder broadcast before promoting a schedule.
Set the audience accurately
A channel centered on stories for children will likely be made for kids. YouTube identifies stories, characters, activities, songs and other subject matter that reflects an intent to target children as relevant signals. Creators are responsible for selecting the correct audience setting, and YouTube may override an incorrect setting. A disclaimer does not turn child-directed material into general-audience content. If a video is aimed at children, YouTube says it is made for kids even when children are not its primary audience.
Plan the channel around the limits that come with that classification. Made-for-kids content loses features including live chat and chat donations, comments, the notification bell, personalized advertising, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships on the content. A channel plan that depends on chat interaction or these monetization tools will not work as expected for made-for-kids streams.

Build a rights-cleared story schedule
Use stories you wrote, licensed, or have verified you can distribute in a livestream and, if you keep one, an archive. Check each component separately: the story text, narration or performance, illustrations, music, sound effects, and any translation or adaptation. YouTube’s terms put responsibility on the provider to hold the rights needed for worldwide use on Google services, including necessary music rights. Rights can vary by territory and by whether a recording remains available afterward; no particular book, recording, or public-domain edition is automatically safe based on its label alone.
- Do not rebroadcast an audiobook or recording just because you can access or purchase it; access is not proof of streaming permission.
- Keep permission records and note any limits on territories, duration, live transmission, or archived playback.
- Use artwork and other visuals only when you have the relevant rights for the intended use.

Configure OBS and test before going public
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point; OBS says it takes the computer’s hardware and network conditions into account.
- Create a scene and add sources. Add the rights-cleared visual sources you need, such as a title card or story artwork. For a static reading channel, avoid unnecessary animation that adds encoding load without serving the program.
- Check audio. In the OBS audio mixer, confirm the intended microphone or playback device is selected and that levels register. Listen to a test recording or stream to catch silence, clipping, or unintended audio.
- Set the YouTube connection. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the applicable service or custom server, and configure the stream key using YouTube’s current live interface. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Review output and test the actual setup. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on tests of your computer and upload connection. The OBS overview covered here does not establish a current YouTube-specific bitrate recommendation, so do not treat an unverified number as universal. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends a short test stream or recording before the first real broadcast.
- Enable and test recovery. OBS describes automatic reconnect in its Advanced settings. Test a brief interruption to learn how your setup behaves. Reconnect can help with some drops; it cannot resolve power loss, a prolonged internet outage, account enforcement, or a YouTube-side interruption.
Keep the stream unannounced or otherwise private during tests where possible, and verify both the picture and sound on YouTube before sharing the public schedule.
Plan operations for a continuous broadcast
A 24/7 schedule needs an owner for failures, not just an encoder configuration. Organize source videos and rights records, decide who monitors the channel, and document a restart procedure. Prepare a safe fallback screen or a clear way to resume the program if an individual story file or scene fails. Local OBS operation also depends on the computer, power and internet connection remaining available; a UPS may help with power continuity for appropriately sized equipment, but it does not guarantee internet or platform continuity.

Decide whether the program is live-only or whether you intend to leave an archive. Confirm that rights cover both uses and account for how long the archive may remain available. Test the computer with the actual scene complexity: static artwork and a modest audio setup may impose less load than animated scenes, but performance must be checked on the machine that will run the broadcast.
Set realistic monetization expectations
Do not build the channel forecast around guaranteed ad income. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, and made-for-kids content does not receive personalized ads. Kids and family quality principles also affect earning eligibility: YouTube says low-quality kids content can receive limited or no earnings, and channels strongly focused on low-quality made-for-kids content may be suspended from the YouTube Partner Program. Possible live monetization features such as Super Chat, Super Stickers and memberships are not available on made-for-kids content as described above.
