For a 24/7 YouTube radio stream with speech, provide captions that cover the whole schedule; do not rely on YouTube’s automatic live captions as an all-day solution. For audio-only programming, a live text alternative can also be appropriate. Start by identifying what viewers will hear, then choose and test a caption workflow that fits it.
Decide what viewers need to understand
Map the stream’s recurring content before choosing a caption method: instrumental music, lyrics, presenter introductions, interviews, announcements, guest segments, and significant non-speech sounds. Captions should represent dialogue, identify speakers, and convey significant sounds. A music label alone does not tell viewers whether the stream includes lyrics or speech.
W3C’s media guidance says captions are not needed for video that contains only background music and no important audio information. That is a narrow case, not a general exemption for music channels: lyrics, spoken links, announcements, and other meaningful audio change the accessibility needs. W3C’s audio and video media guidance explains the distinction.
For a video stream with meaningful audio, WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 says captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media. For live audio-only content, WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.9 describes an equivalent time-based text alternative; its examples include radio webcasts. That is a Level AAA criterion. These W3C explanations describe accessibility criteria, not a universal legal determination for every channel. Applicable legal duties depend on jurisdiction, creator, and content.

Choose a caption workflow for YouTube Live
YouTube requires a caption source: captions must be sent to the livestream, either embedded in the video or delivered through supported software. Enabling a setting alone does not create accurate captions. See YouTube’s live caption requirements for current setup details.
Embedded 608/708 captions
- In the YouTube Live stream setup, enable closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder to provide EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data as YouTube specifies.
- Check that the captions appear in the live player and match the program audio.
YouTube says the caption standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube accepts one caption track per stream entry point. Plan the language and feed arrangement around that limit.

External caption software over HTTP
- Enable captions for the event in YouTube’s stream setup.
- Copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL and enter it in caption software that supports YouTube’s workflow.
- Configure the software to send the caption feed, using the 30- or 60-second broadcast delay specified in YouTube’s instructions.
- Confirm that captions are arriving on the correct event before relying on the setup.
YouTube documents one caption feed per stream entry point for this route. Check its current instructions and confirm software compatibility before production; the interface and supported options can change.
Understand the limits of YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube describes automatic live captions as rolling out to English channels, limited to normal-latency streams, and subject to variable speech-recognition quality. Availability is not guaranteed for every channel. YouTube recommends professional captions first. For a round-the-clock schedule, test across program changes, presenter handoffs, and stream restarts. A successful short test does not establish uninterrupted coverage. If your stream contains little speech, automatic speech recognition also cannot tell viewers what kind of music is playing or provide a complete text alternative where one is needed.
Make the continuous stream usable
- Use a clear title and description that say whether the stream is instrumental, includes lyrics, or has presenters and other speech.
- If the stream plays automatically on a web page for more than three seconds, provide a way to pause or stop it, or a volume control independent of the device’s main volume. W3C summarizes this requirement in its WCAG audio-control guidance.
- If you embed the player elsewhere, check that the player and surrounding controls work with a keyboard and assistive technology. Behavior can vary by browser, embed, and assistive-technology combination.
Keep captions working through interruptions and archives
A 24/7 broadcast may be interrupted, restarted, or split into separate events. After creating or restarting an event, verify that its caption source is active; do not assume an earlier event’s feed configuration has carried over. YouTube’s caption setup is tied to stream entry points and event setup.

Live automatic captions do not remain after the stream ends, and the VOD caption process is separate. For archived broadcasts, inspect the captions and correct them or provide an appropriate caption file when needed. This matters especially when speech, lyrics, or meaningful sounds are important to understanding the program.
