These are separate workflows with different destinations and setup.
Choose the right workflow
| Goal | What happens | How you do it |
|---|---|---|
| Play a prerecorded video during a scheduled or active live event | The VPS encoder sends a live feed to YouTube’s Live Control Room. | Configure the encoder with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. |
| Add a video to your channel’s video library | YouTube stores it as a normal channel video, not as a live event. | Upload through YouTube Studio or automate with the YouTube Data API’s videos.insert method. |
The steps below cover both routes. Use the live workflow if viewers should watch the video in a live stream; use the API workflow if you want a regular upload.
Send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from a VPS
1. Check that the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility before scheduling an event or configuring the VPS. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
2. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling gives you an event page that can be shared before the stream begins.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for that stream; do not assume an address or key from another event will work.
YouTube Help describes stream keys this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Configure your VPS encoder
Install or configure an encoder on the VPS that can read the prerecorded file and send a live feed to YouTube. Enter the Live Control Room’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s server and key fields. Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than treating an ordinary RTMP address as secure. If you see a connection or SSL error, verify the selected protocol, host, encoder support, and port against YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Choose a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the VPS can sustain over its outbound connection. YouTube’s current settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, and recommend constant bitrate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Audio can use AAC or MP3. Check the official settings table for your chosen codec and format; these are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of stream quality.

| H.264 format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are the bitrate recommendations published by YouTube Help, accessed in 2026. Other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates have different recommendations; consult the linked settings table rather than extrapolating from these examples. Your VPS needs stable outbound bandwidth with headroom for the selected bitrate.
4. Start the feed and verify it before the event
- Start the encoder on the VPS so it sends the file to YouTube’s stream URL.
- Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check picture, audio, and stream health before going live.
- For a scheduled event, start the event from Live Control Room when you are ready. Keep monitoring the encoder and YouTube’s stream health while it runs.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived; plan separately if you need a recording.

Upload a normal channel video from a VPS with the YouTube Data API
If the video should appear in the channel library rather than play in a live event, use the YouTube Data API’s videos.insert method with OAuth authorization. The method uploads the media and can set video metadata; Google documents a maximum video size of 256 GB. See the videos.insert reference and Google’s API upload guide.
Use a resumable upload for large files or unreliable connections
Google’s resumable upload flow is useful if the VPS connection drops during transfer:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Authorize the request with OAuth and initiate a resumable upload session.
- Save the upload URL returned for that session.
- Send the video media to that URL.
- If the transfer is interrupted, query the session for the reported byte range and resume from that point.
Follow Google’s current upload guide for request formats and implementation details. Keep OAuth credentials and the resumable session URL private.
Check API project review before promising public publication
YouTube says videos uploaded with videos.insert from unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 are restricted to private viewing until the project passes an audit. Confirm your project’s status and the intended privacy setting before building an automated public-publishing workflow. The API’s ability to set metadata does not remove this project-level restriction.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- The channel cannot start a live stream: confirm channel verification and check for live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours.
- The VPS encoder cannot connect: re-copy the stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event; check RTMP versus RTMPS, encoder protocol support, host, and port guidance.
- The Live Control Room shows no preview: confirm the encoder is running, is reading the intended file, and is sending to the event’s current URL and key. Check the VPS’s outbound connection and encoder logs.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports health problems: compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s settings for that format. Verify stable VPS bandwidth and use constant bitrate as recommended.
- A live event has no sound or picture: inspect the source file and encoder’s audio/video inputs, then confirm the preview before starting the event.
- An API upload stops partway through: use a resumable session and continue from the byte range Google reports, rather than restarting the entire upload unnecessarily.
- An API upload is private when you expected public: check whether the API project is subject to YouTube’s private-only restriction for unverified projects created after July 28, 2020.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating and monitoring your own VPS encoder. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
