Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOn an Ubuntu or Debian VPS, install FFmpeg from the distribution’s package repository, verify that the build has the encoders you need, and publish to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a 24/7 stream, run FFmpeg under a service manager and monitor both the VPS and YouTube’s stream health: restarting a process does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Before you install: check the VPS and YouTube channel
- Confirm the server runs Ubuntu or Debian and that you can use
sudo. Commands below use APT; available FFmpeg versions and encoders depend on the operating-system release and enabled repositories. - Check that the VPS plan permits continuous video traffic and has enough sustained outbound capacity, transfer allowance, CPU headroom if you will transcode, and disk space for any locally stored media or logs.
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave channel activation until the day you intend to start. See the YouTube live-stream setup guide.
An Indian server location by itself does not establish performance. The relevant factors are the route from that particular VPS to the current YouTube ingest endpoint, sustained throughput, provider transfer terms, and server capacity. No provider or Indian city can be ranked without current measurements and plan terms.
Install FFmpeg from the Ubuntu or Debian repository
For a routine server installation, use the operating system’s package repository. FFmpeg’s download page points to Ubuntu and Debian package sources. A source build is an option when you specifically need a version or feature set not available from your packages, but it adds configuration and compilation work; optional external codec libraries are not enabled by default in a source build. Consult the FFmpeg installation instructions if you choose that route.
- Refresh the package list:
sudo apt update - Install FFmpeg:
sudo apt install ffmpeg - Check the installed binary and relevant encoders:
ffmpeg -version ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264|aac'
Ubuntu documents APT as its package-management system and apt-get install as a package installation command; package versions and encoder availability vary by release and repositories. If libx264 or AAC does not appear, do not assume the example below will work unchanged: check the FFmpeg build and select an available supported encoder, or use a package source/build that provides the required feature. See Ubuntu APT documentation and its FFmpeg page.

Get the correct YouTube RTMPS address and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current ingest URL and stream key supplied for that stream. Select RTMPS rather than copying an RTMP address from an older tutorial.
- Keep the key private. Store the complete publishing URL in a protected environment file or another restricted secret store, rather than pasting a real key into a command that could remain in shell history or appear in process logs.
YouTube’s RTMPS help explains how to obtain the stream URL and key. It advises trying port 443 when troubleshooting relevant SSL errors. FFmpeg supports RTMPS as an encrypted RTMP protocol; see the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Choose output settings that match your source
YouTube recommends H.264 among its supported video codecs, CBR, and a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four seconds). For RTMP/RTMPS audio, it supports AAC or MP3. Use settings appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate, and test representative motion and audio while watching YouTube’s stream health. The official encoder settings and bitrate guidance does not make one bitrate suitable for every output.

| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed recommendations and minimums, not a guarantee that a VPS route can sustain the selected bitrate. The figures are from Google/YouTube Help, whose page displays no publication year; accessed 2026-10-03. Check the current table before deployment.
Publish a video file to YouTube with FFmpeg
The command below illustrates a real-time 1080p30 H.264 file stream to an RTMPS URL. It is an example, not a tested, universal recipe. It assumes a 30 fps source, an FFmpeg build with libx264 and AAC support, and an environment variable containing the full URL YouTube supplied, including the stream key.

ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14000k -minrate 14000k -maxrate 14000k -bufsize 28000k
-g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"
At 30 frames per second, -g 60 sets a two-second GOP. The video bitrate in this example follows YouTube’s listed 1080p30 H.264 recommendation; choose the bitrate, frame rate, GOP, scaling, and audio settings for your actual source and output. The example does not scale or change the frame rate, so it does not turn a differently sized or timed source into 1080p30. Confirm that the source, selected YouTube stream settings, and encoder output agree before relying on it.
Set the secret outside the command—for example, in a root-readable environment file—and ensure the shell running FFmpeg receives it. Restrict access to that file and avoid sharing logs or service definitions that expose the key. Test the complete stream in Live Control Room before leaving it unattended.

Run the stream as a recoverable service
For continuous operation, place the publishing command under a service manager such as systemd rather than relying on an interactive SSH session. Use a least-privilege service account, restrict access to the key file, configure restart after process failure, and send output to logs with rotation. The precise unit file depends on your paths, account, and secret-file arrangement, so verify those values on your server rather than copying an unreviewed generic service definition.
A service manager can restart FFmpeg if the process exits. It cannot by itself fix an invalid input, exhausted CPU, unstable network, VPS maintenance, or an interruption at YouTube’s ingest. Monitor the service, VPS resource and network health, log output, and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited setup guide does not promise automatic archival for streams longer than 12 hours. Plan recording and recovery accordingly.

Evaluate an Indian VPS for a long-running stream
Compare actual plans and test from the instance you expect to use. The location label is not a substitute for sustained performance or clear terms.
- Outbound capacity and route: test sustained bitrate and packet stability to the currently selected YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Transfer and policy: check included monthly transfer, overage charges or limits, fair-use conditions, and any rules concerning continuous video traffic.
- CPU: allow headroom for software transcoding at your target resolution and frame rate. If you are only copying compatible streams, verify the actual workload rather than assuming a transcoding requirement.
- Storage: account for source media and logs if they are kept on the VPS.
- Operations: review provider maintenance and restart behavior, and decide how you will detect failures outside the FFmpeg process.
No current measurements across Indian VPS providers or regions establish a best city or vendor. Test the actual plan before committing to a long run.
Troubleshoot common failures
ffmpeg: command not found: confirm installation completed and that the shell can find the binary withcommand -v ffmpeg. Re-runsudo apt updateand install the package if needed.- Unknown encoder or encoder initialization error: check
ffmpeg -encoders. The installed build may not includelibx264or AAC support; use an available encoder or install a build with the required features. - Authentication or connection failure: retrieve the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the entire URL is present in the environment variable, and check for whitespace or expired/replaced credentials. Do not publish the key in support messages or public logs.
- SSL error while connecting: confirm you are using YouTube’s current RTMPS details. YouTube advises trying port 443 for relevant SSL errors.
- Stream connects but YouTube reports poor health: compare actual output resolution and frame rate with the chosen stream, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and check whether the VPS sustains the bitrate. Test representative motion and audio rather than a static opening frame.
- Process repeatedly stops or restarts: inspect FFmpeg and service logs, input-file availability, CPU and memory pressure, disk space, and network stability. A restart policy handles process exits, not the underlying cause.
- Stream is live but no archive appears: check stream duration and recording arrangements. YouTube’s cited guidance specifies automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for longer streams.
