How to Move a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream from a PC to a VPS

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Move the encoder—not the YouTube channel—to a Linux VPS: transfer your licensed media, configure a headless encoder such as FFmpeg with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and supervise it with a service manager such as systemd. Test the VPS stream before stopping the PC encoder. This can keep your home computer offline, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback; monitoring and recovery still matter.

Before you move the stream

  • Confirm live-stream eligibility. YouTube’s live-stream tips say the channel must be verified and have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  • Know what is moving. The VPS will run the encoder and access your media. Your channel and stream remain on YouTube; the encoder still needs the YouTube-provided ingest server URL and stream key.
  • Check the VPS for the actual workload. Consider CPU capacity for your encoding settings, memory, media and recording storage, sustained outbound capacity and transfer policy, region, operating system support, backups, recovery options, and total cost. There is no single instance size established for every stream; test at the resolution and bitrate you intend to use.
  • Plan for music rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to hold necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including applicable music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Confirm that your licenses cover the intended territory, livestream, and any replay or archive. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Move the encoder to a VPS

1. Create or open the YouTube stream settings

  1. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live, then create a stream or reuse an existing stream’s settings.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key for the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to supply these to an encoder.
  3. Treat the stream key as a password: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your stream. Do not put it in a public repository, paste it into public logs, or share it casually. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

2. Transfer media and configure the VPS

  1. Install and prepare a Linux VPS, then create a dedicated directory for the audio, looping visual, playlists, and configuration. Transfer only files you have the rights to stream.
  2. Choose an encoder that supports your media and YouTube’s ingest protocol and can run unattended. FFmpeg is one practical headless option. A public Ubuntu project demonstrates looping media and publishing an FLV feed over RTMP with FFmpeg; it is an example implementation, not a universal configuration or YouTube guarantee: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.
  3. Configure the encoder with the current server URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Do not copy an ingest address from an old guide when the channel’s current settings provide the authoritative destination.
  4. YouTube supports RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. HLS is another ingestion path, with additional encoder requirements and higher latency than RTMP. For a standard music stream, use the protocol the channel and encoder support without adding complexity you do not need. Read YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and HLS setup guidance.

3. Run it as a supervised service

Start the encoder under a service manager such as systemd and configure a restart policy for process failure. Check service logs and confirm that the feed is reaching YouTube. The cited Ubuntu project also describes watchdog and planned-restart ideas; these are operational choices, not required YouTube settings or guarantees. A running process alone does not prove that the public stream is still playing, so check the YouTube preview and watch page as well.

4. Cut over only after testing

  1. Upload the media and configure the VPS while keeping the PC setup intact.
  2. Start the VPS encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Check that audio and visuals are correct and that the stream’s quality is acceptable.
  3. Open the public watch page and verify playback there, too. YouTube recommends checking preview, accessibility, stream quality, and local archive integrity in its live-stream tips.
  4. Once the VPS output is verified, stop the PC encoder so two encoders do not unintentionally publish to the same stream key.

Plan for long-stream archives

Do not treat YouTube’s archive as a complete backup for a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, record locally or divide the schedule into shorter streams. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot the migration

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive the feed Wrong server URL or stream key, a stopped encoder, or an ingest protocol mismatch. Compare the encoder settings with the current values in Live Control Room, inspect the service logs, and confirm that the encoder is using a protocol supported by both its configuration and YouTube ingest settings.
The preview works, but the public watch page does not look right The stream may not have completed the cutover as expected, or the encoder may be sending incorrect media. Check the Live Control Room preview and public page, then inspect the selected audio and visual files and the encoder output before retiring the working PC setup.
The service is active, but playback has stopped A process being alive does not establish that YouTube is still receiving or playing the feed. Check YouTube’s preview and public page alongside service logs. Add monitoring that checks stream output, and consider a watchdog or planned restart as operational safeguards—not guarantees.
The stream key may have been exposed The credential was shared, committed, or included in public output. Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the VPS encoder before restarting. Keep the replacement private.
No complete replay is available The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold or archive capture otherwise did not provide the needed backup. Keep a local recording or schedule shorter broadcasts if preserving the full replay is essential.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a managed alternative to operating the VPS and encoder yourself, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
