How to Use a systemd Service for an Always-On FFmpeg YouTube Stream

A practical Linux guide to running FFmpeg as a boot-started systemd service, protecting YouTube credentials, choosing encoder settings, and diagnosing failures.

Run FFmpeg as a system-level systemd service so it starts after Linux boots and can restart after an unexpected process exit. Use a dedicated account, a protected file for your YouTube stream key, and the current RTMPS ingest details from YouTube Live Control Room. A service marked “active” only confirms that the local process is running; check YouTube’s preview and stream health to confirm the broadcast is reaching viewers.

What systemd can—and cannot—keep running

A system service is managed independently of an interactive SSH session. Configured to start at boot, it can launch FFmpeg when the machine starts; a restart policy can launch it again after FFmpeg exits unexpectedly. Its journal also gives you a consistent place to inspect the process output.

That does not make the broadcast unconditionally available. systemd cannot repair an invalid or revoked stream key, missing media, an unsupported FFmpeg build, an encoder setting that fails, a network or power outage, or a YouTube broadcast that has ended or been rejected. Restarting FFmpeg repeatedly against an unchanged problem may only repeat the failure.

This setup is for a Linux machine with FFmpeg, a suitable input, and a YouTube Live broadcast. You remain responsible for the machine, its power and network connection, the media files, and maintenance.

Prepare the host, input and YouTube broadcast

Check local paths and permissions

The example below assumes FFmpeg is at /usr/bin/ffmpeg, a Linux account and group named stream, a service directory at /srv/stream, and a loop file named loop.mp4. These are example values, not universal defaults. Verify your FFmpeg path, installed build, account, directory permissions, and input type before using them.

The service account must be able to read the media and any configuration it needs. If the source is a live input rather than a file, adapt the FFmpeg input arguments accordingly; file-loop options do not apply to every source.

Get the current YouTube ingest details

In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and use the RTMPS server address and stream key provided for that broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Do not substitute an old, hard-coded ingest address. YouTube’s current encoder guidance is on its Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page, and its workflow and troubleshooting guidance is in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Keep the key private. Do not place it directly in the unit file or a command that you type into a shell, where it may be exposed in configuration or shell history. The example uses a root-controlled environment file instead.

Create a protected stream-key file

Create /etc/stream-ffmpeg.env as root, with the actual values from Live Control Room. The server URL and key shown below are placeholders; replace them and never publish a real key.

sudo install -o root -g stream -m 0640 /dev/null /etc/stream-ffmpeg.env
sudoedit /etc/stream-ffmpeg.env

Put these entries in the file, replacing both placeholder values:

STREAM_URL=rtmps://YOUR_CURRENT_INGEST_SERVER/live2
STREAM_KEY=YOUR_STREAM_KEY

The restrictive ownership and mode allow root to manage the file and the stream group to read it. Confirm that this matches your local service account and security policy. Treat the file as a credential: do not commit it to source control or share it in logs or support posts.

Write the systemd unit

Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service as root. This representative file-input command paces input in real time, reads a loop file, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream to the RTMPS URL joined with the key.

Set suitable ownership and permissions on the unit so it is root-managed. The unit is an example configuration, not a guarantee that these codec or rate-control values fit your media, FFmpeg build, upload connection, or YouTube broadcast. In particular, check that your build has the requested encoder and supports RTMPS.

Adapt the encoding arguments

The sample uses a 30 fps output, a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps), a 5 Mbps video target, and 128 Kbps audio. YouTube’s current guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio; its audio recommendation is 128 Kbps stereo. For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 720p30 at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not measured guarantees. The sample’s 5 Mbps is the listed 1080p30 minimum, not the recommended 14 Mbps setting.

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together. A higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate stream generally needs more bandwidth; use a sustained upload rate that can carry the stream reliably, and test with similar audio and motion before going live. YouTube’s guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps, and bitrate ranges that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. If you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP length to keep the keyframe interval near two seconds.

FFmpeg documents the basic real-time file-to-RTMP shape as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream in its protocol documentation. The systemd example adds looping, encoding, and environment-based credentials; adjust those options to the actual input and ingest configuration.

Enable the service and verify the broadcast

  1. Ask systemd to reload unit definitions, then enable the service at boot and start it now:

    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
    sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service
  2. Check the local process state and recent logs:

    sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service
    sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager

For a live view of new log lines, run sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f and stop following with Ctrl+C.

  3. Separately open YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream-health messages, then confirm the broadcast is actually live. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes stream states such as active, ready, inactive, and error, and reports health and configuration issues; an active local process is not proof of a healthy remote stream. The API’s LiveStreams documentation describes those states and health information.

  4. Test the recovery behavior deliberately during a safe test broadcast: observe what happens when FFmpeg exits, then confirm whether it starts again and whether YouTube accepts the returning stream. A local restart does not itself guarantee that the broadcast continues uninterrupted or recovers into the same YouTube event.

Troubleshoot the failure at the layer where it occurs

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Service fails immediately or stays in a failed state Incorrect FFmpeg path, unit syntax, inaccessible working directory or input, or unavailable encoder. Read systemctl status and the unit journal. Confirm /usr/bin/ffmpeg exists, the service account can access /srv/stream/loop.mp4, and the installed build supports the selected options and codecs.
FFmpeg starts, then exits and restarts repeatedly Invalid arguments, unsuitable or missing media, a credential problem, or a persistent connection failure. Inspect the latest journal output and correct the underlying error before relying on the restart policy. Repeated restarts do not resolve a persistent fault.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube does not show a healthy preview The local process is running while ingest, broadcast state, or stream configuration is wrong. Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. Verify the current RTMPS URL and key, and that the intended broadcast is ready and has not ended or been rejected.
Connection or SSL error Wrong server URL or protocol, or an FFmpeg build without the needed RTMPS support. Use the exact RTMPS server from Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance says the protocol and server should both be rtmps; it suggests trying port 443 for some SSL errors and checking encoder support.
Stream health reports a configuration or quality issue Output format, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or upload capacity may not fit the broadcast. Compare FFmpeg’s actual output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Test sustained upload capacity and use similar audio and motion in a test before relying on the stream.

What this approach costs in responsibility

With a self-managed Linux host, you control the files, FFmpeg command, and system configuration, but you also maintain the machine and network path. Local power or Internet loss can interrupt delivery; a process restart policy only responds to FFmpeg process exits that systemd can observe. A VPS or another hosted Linux machine changes where the computer runs, but still leaves you responsible for configuring FFmpeg and verifying the broadcast. No hardware performance or hosting cost is established here, so compare actual machine, power, network, and maintenance costs for your situation rather than assuming one is cheaper.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel streaming uploaded recordings without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is the alternative to consider first: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded for one flat price per slot, and offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It is for YouTube streaming from uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from its cloud service, so your computer can be off.

The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.

Copyright and YouTube policy still apply

Automation does not grant rights to the media you upload or remove YouTube’s rules. Use recordings you own or have permission to stream, and check the applicable copyright and monetization policies before scheduling a long-running loop. A service restart, valid stream key, or successful ingest is not evidence that a video is authorized or eligible for monetization. See YouTube’s copyright safety checklist as a pre-stream check.
