You do not need a graphics card to send a YouTube livestream from a server. FFmpeg can encode video in software on the CPU and send it to YouTube; whether that server can keep up depends on the video, settings and other workload. For a prerecorded file, use real-time pacing; for a genuinely live input, do not add file pacing automatically.
What you need before you start
- A server that can reach YouTube’s ingest service over the network. For RTMPS, that means a valid endpoint using port 443 and the correct TLS/SNI hostname.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the software encoder you plan to use, such as
libx264. Available encoders vary by package; check your installed build rather than assuming the codec is present. - A YouTube Live event and its ingest URL and stream name/key. Treat the key as a password: do not expose it in a public script, shell history, logs or example.
- Enough CPU capacity to encode your chosen output in real time, plus upload capacity above the outgoing bitrate. There is no universal minimum CPU model established for every input and workload, so test the actual server.
Set up the YouTube event and ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live event and obtain its encoder/ingest details. YouTube’s Live API describes ingestion information as an address and stream name; depending on the encoder workflow, those may be entered separately or combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the exact values and format shown for your event. YouTube Live Streams API. - Choose RTMPS if your FFmpeg workflow supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary streaming; it encrypts the RTMP connection. RTMPS requires the correct endpoint and application path, port 443, and the expected hostname for SNI. YouTube: ingest protocols and YouTube: RTMPS ingestion.
- Keep the stream key out of shared command output. Prefer a protected configuration or environment variable with restrictive permissions, and avoid enabling verbose logging that could reveal the full destination URL.
Choose output settings the server can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and a supported codec and frame rate. It supports up to 60 fps. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth; its audio guidance recommends 44.1 kHz stereo, with 128 Kbps stereo audio. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Use a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate, and make sure the server’s upload connection has headroom. YouTube encoder settings.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Two-second GOP at this frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 120 frames |
These bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular CPU can encode at that format or that a particular connection can deliver it reliably. The encoder settings page was accessed in 2026. Start with a lower format if the server struggles, then test before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Send a prerecorded video with FFmpeg
This illustrative command uses a prerecorded input and a 720p30 H.264 output. Replace the placeholders with your file and the exact RTMPS destination for the event. It is a starting shape, not a tested command; confirm that your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and that your event’s endpoint syntax matches the URL you supply.

For a generated feed or another live source, replace INPUT and adapt the input-specific options; do not use file pacing unless the input needs it. FFmpeg reads media inputs, applies filters or transcodes, and writes the resulting output stream. Its available encoders and options depend on the installed build. FFmpeg documentation.
Test and monitor the broadcast
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test with audio and video motion representative of the planned stream. A static image or silent clip may not reveal problems that moving content or audio will.
- Check that YouTube receives the event and that the preview has picture and sound before depending on it for the full broadcast.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status while the encoder runs. A process that remains open does not prove that the stream is healthy; YouTube can report low bitrate, mismatched frame rate, missing audio and unsupported codecs. YouTube Live Streams API.
- Test the stream on the actual server and upload connection. Do not promise a resolution or frame rate until that setup sustains it.
RTMPS, RTMP, HLS and DASH: which ingest protocol?
| Protocol | Practical distinction | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | RTMP carried over TLS; YouTube lists it for normal, low and ultra-low latency. | The usual secure choice when supported by the encoder. Use the correct RTMPS URL, port 443 and SNI hostname. |
| RTMP | Unencrypted; supports H.264 ingest and normal through ultra-low latency. | Use only when the chosen workflow requires it and you accept the lack of transport encryption. |
| HLS | Encrypted; supports H.264 and HEVC, with higher latency and no ultra-low-latency mode. | Consider for workflows where its codec or 4K/HDR capabilities matter more than low latency. |
| DASH | Encrypted; supports H.264 and VP9 and typically has higher latency than RTMP. | An advanced alternative, rather than the simplest headless starting point. |
Protocol capabilities and latency classifications are YouTube’s descriptions; a protocol choice does not remove the need to match the event’s ingest details. YouTube protocol comparison.

Troubleshoot common failures
- No connection or timeout: Check for a valid RTMPS endpoint, port 443, application path and SNI hostname. A plain RTMP URL sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS can fail with TLS or timeout errors.
- YouTube reports unsupported video or audio: Confirm the output codecs and settings, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics for codec warnings.
- Low stream health or buffering: Compare the actual outgoing bitrate with the recommendation for the selected format. Check that server upload capacity has headroom and that the CPU is not falling behind.
- No audio: Confirm that the input contains an audio stream and that the output encodes supported AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube diagnostics can report missing audio.
- CPU cannot keep up: Lower resolution or frame rate, or choose a less demanding encoding setup, then run another representative test. No single CPU requirement applies to every media source and workload.
- Stream key exposure: Stop using an exposed key and replace it in YouTube’s live settings; update the protected server configuration. Do not leave credentials in public scripts or logs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live without keeping your own server or PC on, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded videos and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
