End of Abyss has the ingredients of a compelling sci-fi descent: top-down shooting, scanner-led exploration, unlockable tools and routes that open as Cel upgrades her gear. That makes the Samus comparison apt as shorthand for its Metroid-like progression—not as a claim of any official connection to Metroid. Launch-period reviewers found plenty to like in its atmosphere, but also reported bugs and frustrating stretches, so its promise comes with caveats.
What is End of Abyss?
End of Abyss is a sci-fi action-adventure with survival-horror elements, developed by Section 9 Interactive and published by Epic Games. It released on October 1, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Epic lists the PC version on its Epic Games Store page; the official PlayStation listing covers PS5. Store availability may differ by territory.
You play Cel, a combat technician descending with her crew into a damaged underground facility. Section 9 Interactive is a small Malmö studio founded by former Tarsier Studios members, according to its feature published by Xbox Wire on September 30, 2026 (Xbox Wire).
How does it play?
Exploration built around tools and return trips
The official PlayStation description highlights a scanner, gear upgrades, unlockable tools and branching paths. New abilities can open routes through areas you have already visited, giving exploration a familiar Metroid-like rhythm: investigate, gain access to more of the facility, and retrace your steps with new options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That structure has a clear basis for the Samus comparison. Game Informer describes the game as combining Metroid-like progression with twin-stick shooting and survival horror. It is a comparison of mechanics and feel, not evidence that End of Abyss is licensed by or directly connected to Nintendo’s series.
Combat and tension
Combat is viewed from above, with twin-stick shooting set against a slower, more atmospheric approach to exploration. Section 9 says the project evolved from a top-down shooter into a game with more emphasis on exploration and tension. That shift suggests the shooting is meant to serve the unsettling descent, rather than make the experience a straightforward action game. The available launch reviews, however, do not establish a single consensus on how well that balance holds throughout.

What did reviewers think?
Early reviews point to an appealing atmosphere and a strong central idea, but they also describe friction that can interfere with the experience. These are individual launch-period assessments, not guarantees about every player’s session or the game’s current patched state.
| Review | What it highlights |
|---|---|
| Game Informer, Charles Harte, PS5 review published October 2, 2026 | Harte praised the blend of Metroid’s familiar formula and survival-horror flair, while reporting major bugs during his playthrough. That report describes his review experience; it does not establish a general bug rate or confirm the state of later updates. |
| GamesRadar, review published September 30, 2026 | The review praised the atmosphere and pacing when they work, while criticizing frustrating sections and problems that become more prominent later in the game. |
Together, those reactions frame the trade-off: the exploration-horror combination can be atmospheric, but reviewers did not find the execution consistently smooth. No numeric review score or independent performance benchmark is established in the available coverage.

Is End of Abyss worth playing?
If you enjoy exploration that gradually opens up through new tools, and prefer an unsettling atmosphere to nonstop action, End of Abyss has a premise and progression structure worth considering. The Samus-inspired label works when it means branching, ability-gated exploration paired with combat; it overstates the case if taken to mean a direct franchise link.
The recommendation is more qualified for players who have little patience for technical trouble or sections that feel frustrating. Game Informer’s reported bugs and GamesRadar’s criticism are reasons for caution, though neither review alone can establish how every player—or a later patched build—will fare.
