First find out whether playback is frozen for one viewer or the outgoing live stream is failing for multiple viewers. Those are different problems, and the fact that the video loops does not by itself show that looping caused the freeze. If you are watching, test another device or connection. If you are broadcasting with OBS, check its connection status and dropped-frame count while the problem occurs.
Work out which side is freezing
Ask another viewer to check the same stream, or open it on a second supported device using a different internet connection. If it works there, investigate the original viewer’s device, browser or app, and connection. If several viewers see the same interruption, investigate the broadcast and its connection to YouTube’s ingest server.
A broadcaster’s clean OBS dropped-frame counter does not prove that every viewer’s playback is healthy: viewers can still experience buffering or lag. Conversely, a single viewer’s freeze does not prove the broadcast itself has stopped.

Try these checks on the device where playback is stuck. YouTube recommends basic browser, network, quality, and device troubleshooting for streaming and video problems.

- Close and reopen the browser, then reload the live stream.
- Close unnecessary tabs and update the browser if an update is available.
- If the player offers quality settings, select a different available quality; try a lower one if playback is buffering.
- Test the same stream on another internet connection, such as mobile data, or on another supported device.
- Restart the device if playback remains stuck.
Live playback can be affected by network congestion and other factors. These checks help isolate the playback path; none identifies a universal cause for every freeze. Avoid buying hardware before testing another device and connection.
If you are broadcasting with OBS
Check the OBS connection state and dropped-frame count during the freeze, and ask whether other viewers see it at the same time. OBS says dropped frames indicate instability between the computer and the remote server, or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Increasing dropped frames are therefore a useful broadcaster-side clue, not proof that a viewer’s device is at fault.

When dropped frames rise
Investigate whether the connection to the ingest server is stable and whether the stream’s configured bitrate can be sustained. OBS documents dynamic bitrate as a way to respond to congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce stream quality. OBS also says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames; that statement concerns dropped frames, not every kind of freezing symptom.
When OBS shows no dropped frames
Do not assume the viewer experience is clear. OBS’s buffering guidance notes that viewers may report lag or buffering even when the broadcaster sees no dropped frames. Compare reports from multiple viewers and test the playback path on another device and connection.

Does the waterfall loop cause the freeze?
The available YouTube and OBS troubleshooting guidance does not establish that looping a waterfall video causes YouTube Live to freeze. Do not treat the loop, YouTube Live, OBS, an ISP, Wi-Fi, a graphics driver, a browser extension, or a particular codec as the confirmed cause without evidence from the specific stream.
To narrow it down, note whether you are watching or broadcasting, which device and browser or app are involved, whether audio continues, whether playback resumes, and whether other viewers see the same interruption. Those details determine which troubleshooting path is relevant.
