In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then start a stream from the Stream tab or choose a scheduled stream in Manage. At the top of the stream page, select Edit > Monetization. Confirm that Monetization is on, then check the mid-roll option: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. YouTube’s instructions are general live-stream guidance; the exact controls shown may vary by account, so they should not be assumed identical for every creator in India. Check the setting on the individual livestream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer and select Create > Go live.
- For a stream you are starting now, use the Stream tab. For a scheduled broadcast, choose it from Manage.
- At the top of the stream’s page, select Edit > Monetization.
- Check that Monetization is On, then inspect the mid-roll mode and its controls.
The stream’s Monetization switch and its mid-roll mode are separate things. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when monetization is enabled for a livestream. Mid-roll settings determine how mid-stream breaks are handled. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
What the three mid-roll modes do

YouTube advises that Scheduled or Manual settings may have lower earnings potential than Automatic. That is general guidance, not a prediction for an individual channel. See YouTube’s explanation of live ad settings
Insert a manual mid-roll while live
Manual breaks are inserted from Live Control Room in YouTube Studio on a computer. Open the live stream’s control room while it is running and use the ad insertion control when you want a break. The availability and precise placement of controls can depend on the account interface. If you select Manual but do not insert any breaks during the broadcast, YouTube says it will not serve mid-rolls in that mode. YouTube’s instructions for inserting live ads

Pause automatic mid-rolls during a moment that matters
For Automatic mode, Live Control Room includes Delay ads. Turning it on pauses automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes; YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. YouTube notes that manually placed mid-rolls still display while this delay feature is on. This control is useful when you want a temporary pause in automatic breaks, but it does not cancel manual insertions. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
Set channel defaults for future livestreams
Monetized channels without rights management can set defaults for future livestreams in Live Control Room settings. YouTube says channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. Even when a channel default is available, check the individual stream’s Monetization and mid-roll controls before it goes live. YouTube’s channel-default guidance

What to expect from ad slots and timing
An enabled mid-roll setting creates an opportunity for an ad, not a guarantee that an ad will run. YouTube’s help documentation states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its ad systems decide whether an ad serves; viewers who do not receive one continue watching the stream. Automatic mode may also show ads at different times to different viewers. YouTube Help
YouTube reports an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. That group average was measured across 207 countries in January 2024; it is not a forecast or guarantee for a particular creator, channel, audience, or Indian livestream.
