You schedule live mid-roll ads in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, under the stream’s Monetization settings. Choose automatic ads for YouTube-selected natural breakpoints, scheduled ads for a fixed interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes, or manual ads that you insert while live. There is no separate India-only schedule: the interval is your stream setting, not a promise that every viewer in India will see an ad at the same time.
Set up live mid-roll ads in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Edit the stream and open Monetization. Turn monetization on.
- Choose a live mid-roll ad mode: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. YouTube’s live monetization help describes these controls. Interface labels may change.
The channel must be monetized and monetization must be enabled for the stream. To earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live Watch Page playback, including playback in the YouTube Video Player embedded on another site, the creator must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Enabling a break does not guarantee an ad: YouTube’s ad systems decide whether to fill each opportunity.
Choose the mode that fits a continuous stream

For an unattended 24/7 stream, automatic mode avoids requiring someone to place every break. Scheduled mode is the direct choice when you want a recurring interval. The sources do not establish a universally best interval for continuous streams or Indian viewers.
Use a delay during an important moment
In Live Control Room, use Delay ads to pause automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes during an important moment. YouTube says a five-second countdown appears before automatic ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay feature is on, so delaying automatic breaks is not a way to suppress a manual break.

What Indian viewers should—and should not—expect
YouTube’s documented controls do not provide an India-specific break schedule, a viewer-local timing control, or an option to make all viewers in India see a break simultaneously. If you tell viewers when you expect breaks, describe it as your chosen schedule and name the time zone—for example, “scheduled every 24 minutes, India Standard Time (IST).” That communicates your setting, not a guaranteed ad delivery time.
With automatic ads, YouTube says it aims to place mid-rolls at natural breakpoints; viewers may receive them at different times. YouTube also says automatic mode limits ad disruption to channel members, temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snoozes mid-rolls for all viewers during high engagement. These are platform behaviors, not controls that guarantee any particular viewer will avoid an ad.

Check channel defaults and ad performance
Defaults for future streams
If appropriate, review channel-level defaults in Live Control Room settings. YouTube says monetized channels without rights management can set defaults for future streams; its help page describes the default as monetization on with automatic medium selected. Check the setting on the stream itself rather than assuming every existing or future stream uses the same configuration.
Revenue and delivery context
YouTube reports an average “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour” for channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. The figure is YouTube’s January 2024 comparison across 207 countries—not an India-specific estimate, a guaranteed result, or a forecast for an individual channel.

You can review live-stream and live-replay ad revenue in YouTube Analytics using the Live filter. If your stream is embedded on an external site with autoplay, YouTube says ads are turned off for that stream. Viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching; viewers who receive a mid-roll rejoin the live stream when the ad ends or they skip it.
Optional: insert manual breaks with a Stream Deck
YouTube Help documents a Stream Deck plugin option for inserting ads during a live stream. It may suit an operator who wants a hardware button for manual insertion, but it is optional: scheduled intervals do not require a Stream Deck, and the hardware does not replace configuring monetization and the ad mode in YouTube Studio. Check the current product listing and compatibility before choosing a specific model.
