The playlist itself does not make a broadcast gapless or failure-proof: matching source streams, accurate durations, a suitable encoder output, and a tested ingest setup all matter.
What an FFmpeg concat file does
The concat demuxer reads a text script listing media files and presents their packets in sequence as if they had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps so the first file begins at zero and each next file begins where the previous one is estimated to end. This is the no-re-encode approach, provided the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases match. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
It is not a live-streaming service or a guarantee of seamless transitions. Incorrect duration estimates—including those caused by truncated files—can produce timestamp artifacts or gaps. Files with incompatible streams may not work correctly with the demuxer.
Build a concat playlist

Create a UTF-8 plain-text file, for example
playlist.ffconcat. The first line may be exactlyffconcat version 1.0to enable automatic format recognition. It must be the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark.Special offer. Add one
filedirective for each media file, in playback order. For files beside the playlist:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'intro.mp4' file 'program-a.mp4' file 'program-b.mp4' -
Use paths that resolve from the process’s working directory or use appropriate full paths. If a path contains characters with special meaning in the script syntax, follow FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping rules in the concat documentation.

Check that each file has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Test the actual inputs rather than assuming that matching filenames or extensions mean matching media.
When to specify duration
The demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next one. If a stored duration is inaccurate, the transition timing may be wrong. You can add a duration directive after a file entry to override its estimated duration, but do so only when you know the correct duration; guessing can make continuity worse. Consult the format documentation for the directive’s syntax.

Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube Live
There is no single command that is safe to copy unchanged for every FFmpeg build and every set of files. The correct input-loop option, option placement, real-time pacing, codec-copy suitability, output container and protocol depend on the installed FFmpeg version, source stream layout, and YouTube ingest route. Treat any command assembled from those pieces as a starting template, then test it with your own files and current software documentation. The workflow is:

Point FFmpeg at the playlist using the concat demuxer (
-f concat) and a path-safety setting appropriate to where the listed files live. Use the installed FFmpeg version’s documented input loop option to repeat the concat input. -
Decide whether the input should be paced in real time. Choose the pacing and output options together so the encoder sends media at a rate appropriate for the selected ingest path.

Choose an output encoder, container, and protocol accepted by your YouTube Live ingest configuration. If using the RTMP-style route, YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Do not substitute an HLS output recipe: HLS has distinct segment and rolling-playlist requirements, and higher latency than a continuous RTMP-style stream. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.

Keep the stream key private. Depending on the encoder application, YouTube’s stream URL and stream name/key may be entered separately or together. Configure the values shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room; never publish a real key in a command, screenshot, or shared script. See YouTube Live stream configuration.

Run a private test with the installed FFmpeg build and the actual playlist. Inspect FFmpeg’s logs and confirm YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video before relying on the setup.
Encoder settings to check
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It also recommends testing with content that has similar audio and motion to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health while live. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the supported resolution, bitrate, and other settings applicable to your ingest configuration; do not assume one bitrate or encoder preset fits every resolution and source.
When the concat demuxer is not the right choice
The demuxer is the no-re-encode option for compatible files. If your sources have differing formats or streams and need to be normalized, FFmpeg’s concat filter is the alternative when concatenation requires re-encoding. That can add processing load and changes the workflow. See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files.

Keep output transport in view as well: a continuous RTMP-style stream and segmented HLS ingestion have different requirements. Follow the instructions for the route selected in YouTube Live rather than combining settings from both.

FFmpeg does not recognize the script: Check that the first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading whitespace or byte-order mark, and that the file is saved as plain UTF-8 text. -
A listed file cannot be opened: Check the working directory, path spelling, permissions, and quoting or escaping for special characters. Use paths appropriate to the machine running FFmpeg.

There are glitches or gaps at transitions: Confirm that streams, codecs, and time bases match. Check for truncated media and inaccurate duration metadata. Set an explicit duration only when its correct value is known.

The playlist plays once instead of repeating: Check that the loop option is the installed FFmpeg version’s documented input option and that it is placed in the correct position for the concat input. Verify using a short test before going live.

YouTube does not receive a healthy stream: Verify the selected ingest route, URL and stream name/key fields, output protocol, encoder settings, and stream key. Review FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream-health status; test representative audio and motion.

The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as compromised. Replace or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration before resuming.
