On Windows, you can make OBS start streaming when it launches by adding --startstreaming to its shortcut, then start that shortcut at sign-in or through Task Scheduler. That can restore a stream after some restarts, but it is not a universal crash-recovery system: the network, camera or media source, and YouTube broadcast can fail independently. Test each failure mode on your own setup before relying on unattended streaming.
First identify what actually stopped
“OBS is open” and “the channel is live” are different conditions. A restart helps only if the failure is one that restarting OBS can address.
- OBS exited or crashed: a startup shortcut or scheduled task may relaunch the program. The sources here do not establish a universal crash watchdog for current OBS versions.
- The source stopped: a camera, capture device, or media source can fail while OBS remains open. Diagnose that source separately; relaunching OBS may or may not restore it.
- YouTube stopped receiving video: OBS can appear open or even show a streaming state without proving that viewers are receiving a feed. Check the stream in YouTube Studio.
- The network was not ready: after a power outage or reboot, the PC may start before the router or internet connection. A failed first connection may not be fixed by OBS auto-reconnect.
- YouTube ended the broadcast: the event’s lifecycle settings can determine whether a later encoder connection resumes the same event or requires a new one.
An OBS forum thread about a 24/7 camera stream includes user reports of source loss and a YouTube connection disappearing while OBS appeared to remain live. Those reports are anecdotal, not evidence of how often these failures occur or what caused them. OBS forum discussion
Set OBS to start streaming when launched
Add the launch argument to an OBS shortcut
- Find the OBS shortcut you intend to use. If you do not have one, create a shortcut to the OBS executable.
- Right-click the shortcut and open Properties.
- In the Target field, add a space after the executable path, then add
--startstreaming. Leave the existing path intact. - Select Apply, then launch OBS using that shortcut and confirm it starts the intended stream.
This argument and the Windows startup suggestions come from an OBS community reply dated June 6, 2024. They are community guidance, not a guarantee for every OBS release or configuration. Read the forum reply

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose how Windows launches the shortcut
- Startup folder: use this for a straightforward launch when the Windows account signs in. Put the configured shortcut in that account’s Startup folder. This starts OBS at login; it is not by itself a watchdog that detects and relaunches a later crash.
- Task Scheduler: use a scheduled task when you need Windows to start OBS as part of a reboot-related workflow. Configure and test its account and trigger behavior on the actual PC; do not assume that a task’s successful launch also means YouTube received the stream.
- Network-aware launch: if internet access commonly comes up after Windows, use a tested delay or a script that checks connectivity before launching or retrying OBS. A fixed delay can help with startup order, but it does not prove that internet access is available.
The cited community guidance specifically warns that the PC and OBS may be ready before network equipment, and that auto-reconnect may not recover if the first connection attempt fails. Build a retry or connectivity check around that risk rather than treating auto-reconnect as a guarantee. OBS community guidance
Check whether YouTube will accept a reconnect
OBS restarting does not necessarily revive the same YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder controls include auto-start and auto-stop; auto-start and auto-stop let the encoder start or stop a broadcast. Reusing stream settings also copies those choices. Review the actual event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm its status after a restart. YouTube Help: stream settings

An OBS community guide describes scheduled broadcasts where disabling auto-stop can allow a later encoder reconnection to continue the event. The guide also warns that a broadcast may eventually end after multiple hours without incoming streaming. It was last updated October 8, 2021, so its interface-specific directions may be stale; check the current YouTube Studio labels and behavior rather than relying on an old menu path. Test recovery instead of assuming it works
Use an unlisted YouTube event for a controlled test before depending on unattended operation. Test distinct failures separately so you know which part of the chain recovered.
- Launch OBS normally and verify the intended YouTube event receives video.
- Restart Windows with the network available. Confirm the shortcut or scheduled task launches OBS and that the event receives video.
- Repeat with the network unavailable during OBS startup, then restore connectivity. Record whether OBS retries and whether the same YouTube event resumes.
- Close or terminate OBS in a controlled test and check whether your chosen Windows launch mechanism starts it again. A Startup-folder shortcut alone only acts at sign-in.
- Test source loss separately, such as stopping the media source or disconnecting the camera, and determine whether the source recovers without an OBS restart.
- Check YouTube Studio after each test. Confirm the event is actually live rather than inferring that from OBS being open.
Record the OBS version, Windows startup method, network conditions, source behavior, and YouTube event status. No cited source validates one universal watchdog recipe or guarantees a recovery time.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open after a reboot | Shortcut target, Startup-folder placement, scheduled-task trigger, or sign-in context | Launch the configured shortcut manually first. Then test the actual startup method under the Windows account and conditions you expect to use. |
| OBS opens but does not start streaming | Whether the --startstreaming argument is attached to the shortcut being launched; OBS stream configuration |
Check the shortcut’s Target field and test it directly. Verify the configured YouTube destination and stream settings in OBS. |
| OBS tries to connect but YouTube remains offline | Network readiness, stream key, or broadcast status | Confirm internet access, verify the key and destination, and inspect the event in YouTube Studio. Add a tested connectivity check or retry if the connection was unavailable at launch. |
| OBS says it is streaming, but viewers see no live feed | YouTube ingest and event state, not just the local OBS process | Check the Live Control Room and verify incoming video and event status. A running process alone is not proof of a live feed. |
| The camera or media freezes while OBS remains open | Source or media playback | Test source recovery independently. A process restart is not a confirmed fix for a camera, capture device, or media-source failure. |
| The old event will not resume | YouTube auto-stop and event lifecycle | Review the event’s current settings and status. If it has ended, determine whether you need to start another event rather than continuing to retry the old one. |
Power-loss and alternative setups
A UPS addresses only brief power loss
A UPS sized for the actual PC and network-equipment load may bridge a brief mains interruption. It does not fix an OBS crash, an internet outage, a failed initial connection, or a YouTube event that has ended. Its usefulness depends on the connected load and required runtime; it is not a substitute for testing restart behavior.
Linux and FFmpeg are a different architecture
For an unattended RTSP camera pipeline rather than the OBS desktop workflow, the independent YouTube AutoEncoder project documents an FFmpeg setup supervised by systemd for Debian, Raspberry Pi OS, and other small Linux hosts. It describes media-progress supervision and YouTube broadcast lifecycle handling. It is not an OBS plugin or one-click repair. Check its maintenance, security, and compatibility before adopting it.
