There is no documented YouTube setting that fixes a general “ads stop after a few hours” cutoff. Start by checking the stream’s monetization and mid-roll settings in YouTube Studio, then distinguish an unscheduled break from an ad that was not served or a viewer watching through an autoplaying embed. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.
Check the live stream’s monetization and mid-roll settings

In YouTube Studio, open the relevant live stream’s settings and confirm that Monetization is On. Check the specific broadcast rather than assuming a channel default or the settings from an earlier stream apply.

Review its live mid-roll mode: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. The modes control when opportunities for ads are created; none guarantees that an ad will be shown to every viewer.

If the channel is monetized and does not have rights management, YouTube says channel-level defaults can be set for future live streams. A default does not replace checking the settings on the stream you are troubleshooting.

Choose the right mid-roll mode
| Mode | How timing works | What to check |

| Automatic | YouTube chooses natural breakpoints. Frequency can be set to Low, Medium, or High, and viewers may see ads at different times. | Confirm automatic mid-rolls are enabled and review the selected frequency. Automatic placement does not mean every viewer gets an ad at the same time. |
| Scheduled | You choose an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Check the interval selected for this broadcast. A schedule creates break opportunities, not guaranteed impressions. |
| Manual | You insert breaks while live. | Check whether breaks were actually inserted. YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served if no manual breaks are inserted. |
Automatic placement offers less timing control but does not require you to insert each break. Scheduled placement makes the interval predictable. Manual placement gives you direct control, with the responsibility to insert breaks during the broadcast. None of the three modes ensures that an ad is delivered.
Check whether the issue affects one viewing context
Ask affected viewers where they are watching. YouTube says ads are turned off when a live stream is embedded on an external site with autoplay enabled. That documented exception can explain why a viewer does not see ads even when the stream has mid-roll settings enabled. Compare reports from viewers watching on YouTube with reports from viewers watching an autoplaying embed before treating the symptom as a stream-wide problem.

Check eligibility separately
YouTube says content that is not suitable for all audiences could be age restricted and become ineligible for monetization. Treat that as a separate eligibility check, not as an explanation for a cutoff that occurs after several hours: YouTube’s guidance does not tie this condition to a particular time into a live broadcast.
What to record if ads still seem to stop
If monetization and the mid-roll configuration appear correct, keep a short record of the broadcast and the reported symptom so you can describe the issue clearly:

Whether the reports came from viewers watching on YouTube or through an autoplaying external embed.

YouTube’s published guidance explains settings, ad delivery, and the embed exception, but does not establish a general few-hours cutoff or a guaranteed repair for this exact symptom. Configured breaks are opportunities, not proof that an impression should appear: YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its guide reports that creators who enabled live automatic mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with creators who did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported comparison, not a prediction for an individual channel.
