Short answer: FFmpeg’s -reconnect options are documented for HTTP connections, not as a switch that makes an RTMP or RTMPS YouTube broadcast reconnect. From a VPS, handle the two failure types separately: validate what happens after a network interruption, and use a process supervisor to restart FFmpeg if it exits. A restart is an approach to test on your own setup, not a guarantee that YouTube will accept the stream again automatically.
Why FFmpeg’s reconnect flags may not fix a YouTube Live output
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation places options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed in its HTTP protocol section. YouTube publishing uses RTMP or RTMPS. The same documentation describes RTMP separately, so attaching HTTP reconnect flags to an RTMP/RTMPS output is not a documented way to recover a YouTube broadcast.
Those HTTP options can be relevant to an HTTP input—for example, a source FFmpeg reads over HTTP—but that is distinct from reconnecting the output publisher to YouTube. Do not treat -reconnect 1 as a universal FFmpeg YouTube Live reconnect command.
Set up the YouTube destination and encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported ingest protocols. YouTube also lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Codec support depends on the FFmpeg build and encoder available on your VPS; do not assume every build can encode every listed format.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Get the ingest details: In YouTube Live Control Room, use the Live setup workflow to find the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s live streaming setup instructions describe entering those details in an encoder and starting the encoder’s transmission.
- Choose RTMPS where supported: Use the secure ingest URL provided in the YouTube workflow and confirm that your FFmpeg build and VPS can reach it.
- Set encoding to YouTube’s current guidance: Configure a supported codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below four seconds. Choose an appropriate resolution and bitrate for your content and available VPS/network capacity; the cited guidance, rather than a universal bitrate value, should determine the exact settings for your stream.
- Supply credentials privately: Keep the stream key out of public command lines, shared logs, screenshots, and source repositories. Its role in authorizing the publishing workflow makes exposure a practical credential risk. Use a private configuration or secret-handling method appropriate to your host.
- Start FFmpeg and check the live state: Confirm that FFmpeg is sending and that YouTube Live Control Room reports the incoming stream as expected before relying on the broadcast.
Do not copy a generic command that embeds a real stream key. The exact FFmpeg input, filters, encoder options, and output URL depend on the media source, installed build, and settings you select; YouTube’s server URL and stream key must come from your own Live Control Room.
Plan recovery for both network interruptions and process exits
| Failure | What a VPS watchdog can do | What still needs validation |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary transport interruption while FFmpeg is still running | A process supervisor that only watches whether FFmpeg is alive may not detect or repair a stuck or disconnected output. | Whether that FFmpeg build and YouTube stream configuration resume successfully after the interruption. The official documentation cited here does not establish a universal RTMP output reconnect behavior. |
| FFmpeg exits | A process supervisor or equivalent watchdog can detect the exit and start FFmpeg again, with bounded restart pacing and alerting. | Whether the restarted publisher is accepted by YouTube and resumes the intended live session; test the real VPS network, FFmpeg build, stream settings, and YouTube state. |
A supervisor addresses a process that has stopped; it does not prove that an FFmpeg process which remains alive will recover its RTMP/RTMPS transport. Likewise, a successful process restart does not itself guarantee that the ingest endpoint will accept the new connection. The official FFmpeg and YouTube pages cited above do not provide a universal end-to-end VPS recovery command or guarantee.

Use a supervisor as a starting point, not a promise
Configure the VPS’s process manager or watchdog to detect an FFmpeg exit, restart it with controlled delays rather than an unbounded rapid loop, and notify you when restarts occur. Keep the launch configuration and credentials private. The exact unit file or command depends on the operating system and supervisor, so there is no single verified unit to copy here. Before depending on automatic recovery, deliberately test a process exit and a network interruption on the actual host, then verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not recover
- FFmpeg exits and stays down: Check the supervisor’s status and logs, confirm it is configured to start the intended FFmpeg command, and inspect the FFmpeg exit output. Add bounded restart handling and alerting if they are absent.
- FFmpeg is running, but YouTube shows no incoming stream: Do not assume HTTP reconnect flags apply to the RTMP/RTMPS output. Check the VPS network path, output destination, and YouTube stream state; reproduce the interruption and validate the specific build and configuration.
- YouTube does not accept a restarted publisher: Verify the server URL and stream key against the current Live Control Room setup, and confirm the stream is ready to receive an encoder connection. Do not infer from FFmpeg restarting alone that the live session recovered.
- The output settings are rejected or incompatible: Check the codec and encoder actually present in the VPS FFmpeg build, then compare the selected protocol and encoding settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- A key appears in logs or a shared command: Treat it as exposed, remove it from public locations, and replace or reset it through YouTube’s live workflow if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
