You can keep a prerecorded video streaming to YouTube from an AWS Lightsail Linux VPS by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on the instance and sending its output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The VPS does not need an inbound RTMP port for this push setup: it makes an outbound connection to YouTube. You will need an eligible, live-enabled YouTube channel, a securely stored stream key, enough VPS capacity for encoding, and a plan for monitoring, reconnects, transfer costs, and recordings.
What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee
In this arrangement, Lightsail hosts the media file and software encoder. The encoder sends video and audio to the ingest URL and stream key provided by YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube then distributes the broadcast to viewers. The instance is a persistent encoder host, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: instance, network, source-file, encoder, credential, or YouTube-side problems can still interrupt the stream.
This guide uses a prerecorded looping video as its example. You can adapt the input for another generated feed, but a source must actually be available to the encoder. If you stream game footage, music, or other third-party material, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast it.
Before you create the VPS: enable YouTube Live
Your channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and have live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the time you intend to start. Check current eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Stream.
- Create a stream or select an existing setup, then copy the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Choose RTMPS if it is available for the encoder and the ingest details shown by YouTube. Use the exact server URL supplied in Live Control Room.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not place one in a public repository, tutorial screenshot, or world-readable configuration. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream settings instructions.
Create and secure a Lightsail Linux instance
- In the AWS Lightsail console, create a Linux/Unix instance in a Region suited to your administration and network path. For a setup where you install the encoder yourself, choose an OS-only image. AWS documents instance creation and browser-based SSH access in its Linux instance guide.
- Select a bundle based on measured encoding load and expected outbound transfer, rather than assuming a particular size will work. Software encoding consumes CPU, and performance depends on the source and chosen output settings.
- Review both the instance’s IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules. Lightsail documents these as separate rule sets; base Linux instances include SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS in the default set. Restrict SSH to trusted addresses where feasible. A static IPv4 can help if you need an unchanged address for administration or DNS, but it is not needed for YouTube ingest.
- Do not open an inbound RTMP or RTMPS port for this push architecture. The encoder initiates an outbound connection to YouTube; Lightsail firewalls govern inbound access and allow outbound traffic. Check the current Lightsail firewall documentation.
- Install FFmpeg using trusted packages for your chosen distribution or an official build source. FFmpeg is one implementation option, not a YouTube requirement.
Configure FFmpeg for a looping video
Put the source file on the VPS, for example at /srv/stream/loop.mp4. Configure FFmpeg to read at real-time speed, loop the file, encode video and audio to settings appropriate for your stream, then publish to YouTube’s supplied ingest address. The command below is illustrative, not a tested universal command or a recommendation for a specific Lightsail bundle:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/loop.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
Set YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL to the complete ingest address and key in a secrets file readable only by the service account or root. Avoid embedding the key in a published script or a shell command that could be exposed through process listings or shell history. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the protocol and TLS features required by the RTMPS URL YouTube gives you.

Choose output settings for the actual stream
Match codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance and to the capacity you have verified on the VPS. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists a recommended bitrate range of 5–14 Mbps, recommends constant bitrate, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. That is encoder guidance, not evidence that a particular Lightsail instance can encode those settings. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and benchmark your source on the selected instance.
In the example, -r 30 requests 30 frames per second and -g 60 sets 60 frames between keyframes—two seconds at that frame rate. The 5 Mbps video bitrate falls at the lower edge of the cited 1080p30 H.264 range; adjust it to match the current YouTube guidance and your test results. The example assumes the input has an audio stream. If it does not, adapt the audio mapping and output rather than asking FFmpeg to encode a nonexistent track.

Keep the encoder running and recover deliberately
Run FFmpeg as a dedicated non-root service account under systemd or another process supervisor. Configure an explicit working directory, a restart-on-failure policy, resource limits suitable for your tests, and logs that do not disclose credentials. A supervisor can restart a process that exits; it cannot by itself fix an instance failure, lost network, missing source file, changed stream key, or YouTube-side interruption. If transient connection failures require a retry loop, implement and validate that behavior separately.
Before relying on the service, decide what it should do if the source ends, the VPS reboots, YouTube disconnects, or the key changes. Add monitoring and an alert route an operator will actually check. Do not treat “process active” as proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Start, preview, and verify the broadcast
- Start the service and inspect its logs for encoder errors, connection failures, or repeated restarts.
- Open the matching event in Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Confirm the correct event, privacy setting, and stream content before going live or using the applicable auto-start behavior.
- Watch the preview and YouTube stream-health status. Check that the video loops cleanly, audio behaves as intended, and the player remains healthy.
- Leave monitoring in place after launch. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring stream health; its live streaming tips cover those checks.
Estimate transfer and operating cost
Streaming continuously sends data for as long as the encoder runs. Estimate transfer from the outbound bitrate and runtime, then compare the result with the allowance for the current Lightsail bundle and Region. As a rough decimal-unit estimate, each 1 Mbps sustained for 24 hours sends about 10.8 GB before protocol overhead; multiply by the actual video-plus-audio bitrate and the hours streamed. This arithmetic is an estimate, not an AWS billing quote.
AWS says bundle transfer allowances apply and qualifying excess outbound internet transfer can be billed. Allowances and prices vary and can change, so check the current Lightsail pricing and bundle table for the Region and plan you select, and use AWS’s pricing calculator if you need a cost estimate. Include storage for the media file and any local recordings, as well as the compute capacity needed for software encoding.

Plan recording and long-running reliability
YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on a complete automatic archive for a continuous broadcast that exceeds that duration. If preserving a full recording matters, schedule segmented sessions or record a local copy with enough disk capacity and a retention plan; verify current archive behavior for the stream configuration you use. See YouTube’s archived live stream guidance.
- Decide how to detect a stopped or unhealthy broadcast, not just a stopped encoder process.
- Document recovery steps for an instance reboot, an expired or reset key, a missing file, and a YouTube ingest disconnect.
- Keep enough disk space for the source, logs, and any local recording; define a cleanup and retention policy.
- Test the setup and its failure/restart behavior before treating it as unattended.
When a Lightsail encoder is—and is not—the right option
A Lightsail VPS centralizes a software encoder and source file in the cloud, but it uses instance CPU and outbound transfer and still needs monitoring. A local or hardware encoder moves encoding and source capture off the VPS, but depends on its own equipment and a reliable upstream connection. YouTube accepts feeds from software or hardware encoders; choose based on where the source lives, verified encoding capacity, who can administer the system, recovery needs, network reliability, and whether you need a recording. Neither approach removes YouTube’s eligibility, stream-key, or content-rights requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
