You can run a continuous YouTube music stream from a spare PC with OBS: loop rights-cleared local audio, send it to YouTube Live, then keep the computer, network and power available. First confirm that your channel is eligible to livestream. Before you begin: check channel eligibility and music rights
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Enable livestreaming ahead of launch and allow time for any setup rather than discovering a restriction when you are ready to broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Use only music you have the necessary rights to use in a livestream. Access to a track through a music service, or permission to use it for another purpose, does not by itself establish livestream rights. YouTube’s Content ID system may interrupt a stream using third-party content even if you say it is licensed; if the rights holder requires allowlisting, ask them to allowlist your channel. Read YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.
Prepare the spare PC and your media
Put the audio or video files you are authorized to stream in a folder the PC can access. For a single file, OBS can use a Media Source; for a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can play multiple files and loop the playlist. VLC must be installed for the VLC source to appear. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.

For a continuous broadcast, plan to leave the PC running with the media available and OBS connected. A spare PC is not an independent backup: interruptions to its power, internet connection, or encoder can stop the stream.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube Live
- Enable livestreaming. Check your channel’s eligibility and complete YouTube’s setup before the planned start time. YouTube’s eligibility and setup page explains the requirements.
- Create a scene in OBS. Add a Media Source and select a local audio or video file. Turn on its Loop setting if you want that file to repeat. To play several files, add a VLC Video source, put the files in its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC if the source is missing.
- Create a YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream and connect OBS as the encoder. Use RTMPS ingest where available. Copy the stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings; treat it as a password and do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Choose encoder settings for the actual connection. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Its guidance lists H.264 video and CBR bitrate encoding, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and lists AAC or MP3 stereo audio at 128 Kbps. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain a given stream quality. Select settings your measured upload can reliably support.
- Test before going public. Run a test using the intended files and settings. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm sound and image, and verify that the stream plays on the channel’s watch page. Follow YouTube’s testing and monitoring guidance.
- Start and monitor the stream. Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health. Keep OBS open and the source files accessible for the whole session.
Check upload capacity and plan for interruptions
Measure upload capacity rather than relying on download speed alone. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; that is its guidance, not a universal measured minimum for every stream. Test under conditions similar to the intended broadcast and leave room for other network use. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See its network and streaming tips.

In India, local power and ISP conditions vary, so test your own setup rather than assuming a particular speed, backup duration or power solution will work everywhere. If brief power interruptions are a concern, a UPS for the PC and router is an optional measure. No particular size or runtime is established here: check the equipment load and test your backup plan under your own conditions. A UPS will not fix an internet outage.
Decide whether you need a complete replay
A 24/7 live broadcast is not a dependable way to create one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The 12-hour caveat concerns archiving; it does not prevent a stream from running longer. If a replay matters, plan shorter sessions and make a local recording with enough storage, then verify that recording is actually being saved. YouTube also recommends a local archive as backup. Troubleshooting common failures
- The stream option is unavailable: Check channel verification, livestream access and any restriction in the previous 90 days. Complete eligibility setup before retrying.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm that the stream is active in Live Control Room, OBS is using the current stream key and the correct ingest settings, and your connection can reach YouTube. If the key was exposed or replaced, update it in OBS.
- Video or audio stutters: Check upload capacity and stream health, reduce bitrate or quality to a level the connection reliably sustains, and preserve YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom. Retest before relying on the stream.
- The playlist stops instead of repeating: Check that Loop is enabled for a single Media Source or Loop Playlist is enabled for VLC Video. If VLC Video is missing, install VLC and reopen OBS.
- The stream is interrupted after copyrighted music is detected: Stop using the disputed track until you confirm livestream rights. Where required, have the rights holder allowlist your channel; a license claim alone may not prevent Content ID interruption.
- The live stream has no complete replay: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use shorter sessions if a YouTube archive is important, and check that a separate local recording is being written.
