Use a now-playing overlay that matches how your YouTube radio gets its music. For a YouTube or YouTube Music playlist played in a browser, the Music on stream extension is the most direct fit among these options. If Nightbot controls song requests, its desktop app can write the current song to a file that OBS can display. If viewers choose tracks through StreamElements, use its Media Request widget. These tools serve different playback workflows; none makes music use authorized by itself.
Choose a method based on where the music comes from

For a standard browser-played YouTube radio playlist, start with the extension route. Choose Nightbot if it controls requests, or StreamElements if a viewer-managed request queue is part of the stream.
Show titles for a YouTube or YouTube Music playlist
The Music on stream OBS resource describes a browser-extension workflow for YouTube and YouTube Music. It can use YouTube chapters or a playlist written in the video’s description as the title source, and its listing describes customizable display, scrolling for long titles, and hiding the overlay while playback is paused.
- Check the tracklist first. Open the video or playlist description and look for a usable tracklist; if titles are represented by chapters, check that the video actually has chapters. The extension lists these as possible title inputs, but that does not mean every playlist has them.
- Review the current resource instructions. Follow the installation and configuration steps on the resource listing, and confirm that its current browser and streaming-software workflow fits your setup. The listing describes the feature set but does not establish compatibility with every current browser or configuration.
- Add and position the overlay in your stream scene. Use the extension’s documented overlay workflow, then place the now-playing element where it will not cover important on-screen content.
- Check it with a known track change. Confirm that the displayed title changes when playback moves to another track and that long titles remain readable. If the title is absent or wrong, check whether the source video supplies accurate chapters or description tracklist data.
Display Nightbot’s current song in OBS
Nightbot documents a Windows and macOS app that writes current-song information to a file in the Nightbot folder under Documents. Its output can be customized in Song Requests settings. This method makes sense when Nightbot’s Song Requests controls playback, rather than when music is simply playing in an unrelated browser tab.

- Set up Nightbot Song Requests. Use the Nightbot control panel to manage the request workflow. The Song Requests documentation describes the player information, including the track title and uploader, duration, song link, and requester.
- Install and run the Nightbot App. Nightbot provides app downloads for Windows and macOS. Let the app write its current-song output file in the Nightbot folder under Documents.
- Customize the output if needed. Adjust the file’s output through the app’s Song Requests settings so the displayed text suits your scene.
- Add the file to OBS as a text source. Point the source at the current-song output file, then check that the displayed title changes after the request player moves to another track. The documentation establishes file output and OBS use, but not a universal refresh interval or scene configuration.
If an on-screen label is unnecessary, Nightbot’s !songs current command can report the current title in chat.
Use StreamElements for viewer song requests
StreamElements’ Media Request guide, updated July 17, 2026, covers viewer media requests, queue management, and showing a Media Request widget on stream. It describes an OBS.Live browser-source integration and a dedicated overlay; the widget settings also let creators hide video. Use it when you want the StreamElements request queue represented on screen, rather than as a general title detector for other YouTube playback.

Why YouTube may not show song titles
YouTube’s “Music in this video” section is metadata in a video’s description, not a documented live now-playing overlay. YouTube says it appears only in some circumstances, including certain Content ID-claimed works and Audio Library tracks. Song information may be absent if YouTube lacks sufficient rights-holder metadata or has not identified the music. See YouTube’s help page for details.
Keep title display separate from music rights
Showing a title does not grant permission to stream the song. Nightbot’s documentation warns, “Streaming copyrighted music content may result in negative consequences for your stream,” and recommends using licensed or free music and limiting requests to an appropriate channel playlist. Check the rights for the specific music you plan to use; none of these display methods establishes that a track is licensed for your stream.
