OBS sends the stream from your computer; it does not host it. Your computer, power, playback source, and internet connection must keep working for a local stream to stay online.
Before you build the stream: check channel and content readiness
Confirm YouTube live access
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days; the streamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before spending time on the setup: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Clear music and visuals for both live and archived use
Use music and artwork you created or have permission to use for this specific channel and use. Keep the license terms and permissions available. A track being online, labeled “copyright free,” or licensed for another purpose does not by itself establish permission for a YouTube livestream or its archive.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. It may replace the feed with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. If you have a license, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. If you archive the broadcast, Content ID claims may be made after it ends. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams. Copyright and licensing requirements vary by catalog, territory, and intended use, so confirm that your specific permissions cover the stream and archive.

Build a lo-fi scene in OBS

Install OBS from the official OBS Project Help Portal. OBS is free, open source, and usable commercially without restrictions according to its help materials.

Create a scene, then add your music playback source and a visual: for example, a static image, a looped animation, or another visual you have permission to use. A simple, low-motion scene is easier to sustain than a complex one, but test the actual media you plan to run.

Check the OBS audio meters while the music plays. Confirm that the picture is visible, correctly framed, and not unintentionally cropped. Listen for clipping, silence, or an unintended second audio source.

Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for basic output settings. Then set the encoder to match YouTube’s guidance and the capacity of your computer and upload connection.

For a lo-fi scene, 720p/30 or 1080p/30 is a reasonable practical starting point; it is not a YouTube requirement or a guaranteed stable preset. Favor a stable feed over the highest resolution, and test before committing to a long broadcast.
Choose encoder settings that your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds (and no more than four seconds apart), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps and lists stereo AAC/MP3 options. The bitrate recommendations below are from YouTube’s encoder table retrieved on October 3, 2026; they are recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or connection stability.

Use the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance when configuring OBS because platform recommendations can change. Select the row and codec that match your actual output. Leave upload headroom instead of setting the bitrate at the connection’s measured maximum; YouTube advises choosing settings for connection reliability and checking stream health.
Connect OBS to a YouTube broadcast and go live

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Copy its stream key and keep it private: the key authorizes an encoder feed to your channel.

In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service or configure the platform connection, then enter the stream key if you are using the key-based method. Confirm the destination and output settings. OBS connects directly from your computer to the streaming destination; there is no OBS relay server in this path.

Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the YouTube preview or control room to show the incoming picture and sound. Check the control-room prompts and use YouTube’s live controls to start the viewer-facing broadcast. Interface labels may change, so follow the current prompts rather than relying on a fixed button name.

For your first run, use a private or otherwise non-public test. Confirm the intended audio, visual, and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health before making the broadcast public.
Test and operate the stream for the long run

Watch OBS’s dropped-frame count and connection indicator, as well as YouTube’s stream-health messages. OBS notes that increasing dropped frames or a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate.

If frames drop, lower the bitrate and test again, or improve connection stability. Do not assume that a successful short test proves a stream will stay online indefinitely.

A local 24/7 broadcast depends on the host computer staying powered on and awake, OBS remaining active, the music source continuing to play, and the internet connection remaining available. Plan for power or network interruptions and operating-system restarts; the cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime or prescribe a complete recovery architecture.

Check copyright and policy notices during operation. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can terminate a live stream, and YouTube’s copyright matching can interrupt a broadcast even where you have a license if the owner has not allowlisted your channel.
