You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream with Docker by keeping an FFmpeg process alive in a container on an always-on host. FFmpeg loops media you have the right to stream and sends it to YouTube Live using the channel’s ingest address and stream key. Docker packages the encoder; it does not provide continuous uptime by itself. You must also keep the host available, recover failed processes, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and handle copyright and broadcast lifecycle issues.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- An always-on host capable of running Docker and FFmpeg. The suitable host size depends on your media and whether FFmpeg must encode it; no universal sizing figure is established here.
- Local media files and a playlist containing only material you have permission to broadcast.
- A YouTube Live stream’s server address and stream key, copied from YouTube Studio.
- A plan for process recovery and monitoring. A running container alone cannot ensure that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
For a typical radio-style channel, the media may be audio-only or may include a static or changing video track. Configure the output to match YouTube’s current ingest requirements and verify its health in YouTube Studio; do not assume a file that plays locally will necessarily be accepted as a live input.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming for the channel. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and copy the ingest server address and stream key shown for it. Use the values YouTube provides rather than a server address copied from an older tutorial.
- Keep the stream key private. It authorizes an encoder to send content to your channel, so inject it into the running container through an appropriate runtime secret or environment configuration. Do not bake it into a public image or commit it to a repository.
- Choose RTMPS when using YouTube’s secure ingest endpoint. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies TLS over port 443 and requires the correct hostname to be sent via SNI for hostname authentication. Use the endpoint supplied for your stream and ensure your client preserves the hostname for TLS.
Package FFmpeg and your media in Docker
Use a container image that includes FFmpeg, then provide it with the playlist and media files through a mounted directory or another persistent storage arrangement. Keep the playlist and configuration outside the disposable container layer when you need them to survive a container replacement.
Set the loop behavior explicitly for each input that should repeat. For a single media file, make FFmpeg loop that input; for a playlist, ensure the playlist mechanism advances and returns to the start rather than exiting at the end. The precise FFmpeg options depend on the input format and chosen playlist method. The reviewed guidance does not establish a tested Dockerfile or Compose file, so treat example configurations elsewhere as starting points and validate them with your own files.

Copy compatible streams or encode them
If the input’s codecs and stream properties are already compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements, stream-copying can avoid an unnecessary encode. If they are not, encode to a supported format and configure the audio and video parameters to suit the channel’s intended output. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before settling on codec, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval; do not assume a preset based solely on a file’s extension.
For an audio-only station, verify that the outgoing feed actually contains audio and that the video component, if included, is supported. YouTube’s health diagnostics identify missing audio or video, unsupported video codecs, open GOPs, and keyframes that are too far apart as possible configuration problems.

Run the stream continuously and recover failures
Start the container with the media available, the stream key injected at runtime, and a process that remains in the foreground so the container runtime can observe whether FFmpeg exits. Configure a suitable container restart policy or a host-level supervisor, and arrange for Docker and the host to start after a reboot. These are deployment choices rather than a guarantee of uninterrupted service: the exact policy and host requirements depend on your system.
A community example shows one pattern: FFmpeg loops local audio/video on an Ubuntu VPS while a service manager handles restarts. It is an implementation example, not official Docker guidance or a promise of uptime; see the project.

Monitor both sides of the connection
- Check that the FFmpeg process and container are running, and inspect logs for input, encoding, or connection errors.
- Check YouTube Studio’s live dashboard and stream health. A locally running process does not prove that viewers are receiving a valid stream.
- Use YouTube’s resource health status to investigate reported configuration errors and warnings. The Live Streams API reference distinguishes informational, warning, and error health issues.
- Confirm that the encoder reconnects after a dropped connection and that the YouTube broadcast resumes as intended. Automatic container restart and recovery of the YouTube ingest connection are related but separate concerns.
Understand broadcasts, streams, and archives
YouTube treats a broadcast—the viewer-facing event or video—and the incoming stream feed as distinct resources. Its broadcast lifecycle documentation describes keeping a 24/7 broadcast live while completing a separate broadcast bound to the same stream. This distinction matters if you need to manage event sessions without treating the encoder feed and the public broadcast as the same object.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single 24/7 session is longer than that threshold, so do not count on one complete automatic archive of the entire continuous run. If archives matter, check the current YouTube Studio controls and plan separate broadcast sessions or another recording workflow.

Copyright and channel-policy risks
Only stream music, game audio, visuals, and other media that you own or are licensed to use for this live broadcast. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it.
A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube’s guidance notes that a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID. Resolve permissions with the relevant rights holder and ensure any required allowlisting is in place before relying on a licensed track in a continuous stream. A Docker loop does not change copyright obligations, and repeated playback does not make unlicensed material permissible.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The container exits when a file ends | The input or playlist is not configured to loop, or FFmpeg exits after reaching the end. | Make loop behavior explicit and confirm that the playlist advances and repeats. Check the FFmpeg log for end-of-file or playlist errors. |
| The container runs, but YouTube shows no healthy input | Wrong ingest address or stream key, connection failure, or an output configuration YouTube cannot use. | Re-copy the endpoint and key from YouTube Studio, check the RTMPS hostname and port 443 setup if applicable, then inspect YouTube’s health status and the FFmpeg connection log. |
| YouTube reports missing audio or video | The outgoing feed lacks a required component or the selected input/output mapping is wrong. | Inspect the actual output streams and FFmpeg mapping; confirm the intended audio and video are present. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported codec, open GOP, or widely spaced keyframes | The output encoder settings do not meet the ingest configuration YouTube expects. | Review the current YouTube encoder guidance, adjust encoding settings, and check the dashboard again after reconnecting. |
| The stream stops after a host reboot or FFmpeg crash | The host, Docker service, or container has no suitable startup/restart supervision. | Configure host startup and a container restart policy or supervisor, then verify recovery with a controlled restart. Confirm YouTube receives the recovered feed. |
| The stream is interrupted despite a healthy encoder | YouTube may have detected third-party content or another broadcast-side issue. | Check YouTube Studio notices and health indicators. For licensed content, confirm any needed Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder. |
Docker versus a managed cloud service
Docker is a fit when you want control over the encoder and media pipeline and can maintain an always-on host, updates, restart behavior, and monitoring. A managed service shifts more of that operational work to a provider, but compare its supported media, recovery behavior, quality handling, and pricing directly before choosing. The meaningful trade-off is control and maintenance responsibility, not a claim that one approach guarantees uptime.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a managed option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube without leaving Docker, a computer, or a home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the media from its cloud service and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps, streamed as uploaded without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for plan details, then start your free day.
