Yes. You can use FFmpeg on a Linux server to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live without OBS. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy its stream URL and key, then configure FFmpeg to read the file in real time and publish to that endpoint. Use the URL and key supplied for your stream, prefer RTMPS, and test the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A Linux server with the video file available locally and enough upload capacity for the quality you choose.
- An FFmpeg build with the input, output muxer, and video and audio encoders you plan to use. YouTube accepting a codec does not mean your installed FFmpeg build can encode it.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room.
FFmpeg documents reading a file at real-time speed and sending it over RTMP; YouTube’s encoder workflow supplies the ingest URL and key. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you have scheduled.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. These values are specific to the stream; do not use an endpoint copied from an unrelated example.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shared command history, or other public place. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room when available. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingestion. The protocol must be
rtmps, the server and path must be valid, and the connection uses port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear, then confirm Go live in Live Control Room. Starting FFmpeg alone does not necessarily make a scheduled event public.
Choose settings that fit the file and connection
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and must not exceed four seconds. Recommended advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Check the full YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table rather than extrapolating a bitrate from one resolution.

| Example H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not guarantees that a particular server or route can sustain the stream. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a reliable quality for the connection. Leave headroom for fluctuations and test with representative motion and audio. YouTube transcodes live input into viewer formats.
Check the installed encoders before settling on a command. For example, ffmpeg -encoders lists encoders compiled into that FFmpeg build. If you select an encoder that is absent, the command will fail even though YouTube supports that codec.

Send the prerecorded file with FFmpeg
This is a template showing the real-time file-to-RTMP pattern, not a tested, universal YouTube command. FFmpeg’s documentation illustrates the general form as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. Adapt the input mapping, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and RTMPS output syntax to your file, installed build, and the exact URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not paste a real key into a public script or share it.
ffmpeg -re -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
The example’s video values illustrate one possible 1080p/30 H.264 target and a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps; the bitrate recommendation is YouTube’s. It is not a promise that the command will work unchanged: the source may require scaling, different stream mapping, or another encoder, and RTMPS support and URL formatting vary by FFmpeg build and endpoint. Get the complete ingest URL and key from Live Control Room and consult the local FFmpeg build’s help if it rejects an option. Do not assume a universal endpoint or append a key in a format YouTube did not provide.

The -re input option makes FFmpeg read the file at real-time speed rather than send it as fast as possible. The example does not loop the file. Repeating a file, supervising the process, or reconnecting automatically after a failure needs additional setup; the cited platform and FFmpeg guidance does not establish one universal configuration for those behaviors.
Verify the broadcast and end it cleanly
- Start FFmpeg and watch Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health indicators.
- Check both moving picture and audio using a representative part of the recording. YouTube recommends testing with representative video and audio and monitoring stream health.
- If scheduled, wait for the preview and click Go live when ready.
- To stop, stop the FFmpeg process or otherwise stop sending content, then confirm the event’s state in Live Control Room. YouTube says stopping encoder content ends the stream.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat an archive as guaranteed for a broadcast that runs 12 hours or longer.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or option | The installed build lacks that encoder or does not support the option. | Inspect available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders; choose a supported encoder and check its local options. |
| YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect URL or key, a malformed output URL, or a connection problem. | Copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream. Verify the RTMPS protocol, server/path, port 443, and client RTMPS support. |
| Stream health is poor or unstable | The selected bitrate exceeds reliable upload capacity or the connection fluctuates. | Run an upload speed test, reduce the output quality or bitrate using YouTube’s table, and test under representative conditions. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong | The file’s audio stream was not mapped or encoded as expected. | Inspect the input streams and adapt FFmpeg’s mapping and audio encoder to the file and available build; verify audio in the Live Control Room preview. |
| Scheduled stream shows a preview but is not live | The encoder is connected, but the scheduled broadcast still needs confirmation. | Click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. |
| The stream stops when the server or process stops | FFmpeg is running on that host; it is not a managed, persistent streaming service. | Keep the process and server running for the broadcast, and arrange process supervision or recovery separately if required. Test that setup rather than assuming reconnect behavior. |
Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Using FFmpeg instead of OBS does not change the rights needed for the recording, music, footage, or other material you broadcast. Make sure you have permission to use the content and that it complies with YouTube’s policies. A live stream’s technical success is separate from whether its content or later channel use qualifies under YouTube rules; check current YouTube requirements for your channel and content before scheduling.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than learning to operate a Linux encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
