Liquidsoap can send a continuous music program to YouTube Live through RTMP or HLS. To keep it running around the clock, you also need a host that stays online, a source that does not run out, a compatible encoder, a protected YouTube stream key, and a plan to detect and recover from failures. Liquidsoap’s documentation demonstrates the YouTube output paths, but it does not establish a ready-to-run 24/7 deployment for every Liquidsoap release or host.
What you need before configuring Liquidsoap
- An always-on computer or server with stable outbound internet. Leave roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, as YouTube advises, and monitor stream health while testing. YouTube’s network and stream-health guidance.
- A Liquidsoap build with the output and encoder dependencies your chosen configuration needs. Optional libraries affect which encoders are available; inspect the installed build with
liquidsoap --build-configand consult documentation for that release. - A continuous audio source, such as a playlist or other source that can keep producing content, plus a video stream if the YouTube broadcast is audiovisual. The precise source composition depends on your files and Liquidsoap version.
- A YouTube Live stream key and ingest configuration from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, logs, screenshots, and repositories.
- Permission to stream every track and visual in the program, including any required Content ID allowlisting.
The official Liquidsoap homepage demonstrates FFmpeg encoding with H.264 video and AAC audio, then sends the result to YouTube using output.youtube.live.rtmp and a stream key. That is a documentation example, not a tested, complete unattended playlist service. Confirm syntax against the installed release before using it in production. Liquidsoap homepage
Choose RTMP or HLS
| Path | Liquidsoap output and requirements | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | Liquidsoap documents output.youtube.live.rtmp, defaulting to rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2. It requires a stream key and an encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. |
Use a compatible encoder and the current YouTube stream settings. Do not assume your Liquidsoap build exposes the same encoders or syntax as another release. |
| HLS | Liquidsoap documents HLS output, defaulting to https://a.upload.youtube.com/http_upload_hls, and requires a stream key. YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements include TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. |
HLS sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP. Confirm that the installed Liquidsoap output and encoder can meet YouTube’s current HLS requirements; the two routes are not interchangeable in every setup. |
See the Liquidsoap output reference and YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance. Both Liquidsoap and YouTube documentation can change, so check the guidance for your installed version and current Live Control Room configuration.
Set encoder parameters and bandwidth
YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 frames per second, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS, its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; listed audio codecs are AAC and MP3. Liquidsoap’s homepage example uses H.264 video and AAC audio with FFmpeg. Check YouTube’s current encoder table and settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose bitrate for the actual picture settings. YouTube’s table recommends H.264 video at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are settings-specific video recommendations, not universal targets for every music stream. For a mostly static music visual, select settings your host can sustain and verify the result in stream health rather than treating those figures as mandatory for all resolutions and frame rates.
- Audio: YouTube’s advanced guidance lists stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Confirm your encoder and source use compatible settings.
- Keyframes and rate control: Configure CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval where supported; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Network capacity: Account for the total outgoing stream bitrate and retain about 20% headroom on the upload connection. Test at the intended resolution and frame rate; a connection that works for ordinary browsing may not sustain a continuous broadcast.
Liquidsoap’s development documentation identifies %ffmpeg as the route for video and codecs or containers outside its other encoder set. The right syntax and available encoders are release- and build-dependent. Check Liquidsoap’s encoding documentation and the build configuration on your host before drafting the output.
Build a continuous source and start the output
- Prepare the media. Put only music and visuals you are authorized to stream into the source or playlist you will use. Check that files decode correctly and that the source can move to its next item without ending the program.
- Configure the source for continuity. Compose a Liquidsoap source that continues across playlist items and handles empty playlists, unavailable files, and decode failures deliberately. A fallback source can help in some designs, but a fallback example in documentation is not, by itself, a complete recovery system.
- Configure the encoder and YouTube output. Select RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, set compatible video and audio parameters, and supply the YouTube stream key through a secret-safe method appropriate to your host. The Liquidsoap documentation examples provide a starting point, not a universal script.
- Run a test stream. Start with a private or unlisted broadcast where suitable. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream-health messages; verify that both sound and picture are present and that the stream remains stable before relying on it.
- Supervise the process. Configure the host’s service manager or equivalent to start Liquidsoap after reboot and restart it after a process failure. Add alerts or periodic checks so a stopped process, a failed source, or a disconnected YouTube ingest is noticed. Exact service-manager configuration depends on the host and is not established by the Liquidsoap output examples.
- Keep an independent recording if the full program matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. A 24/7 stream should not depend on one YouTube archive as its complete record. YouTube’s archive guidance.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If copyrighted material remains after a warning, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when you have licensed music, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; without that, a stream can still be interrupted. Confirm rights for both music and visuals, plus any allowlisting requirements, before going live. Buying a track or finding it online does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and use the copyright safety checklist as a planning aid.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidsoap rejects an encoder or output setting | Build capabilities, optional libraries, or release-specific syntax | Run liquidsoap --build-config, check the encoding and output documentation for the installed release, and revise the configuration to use a supported encoder. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Stream key, ingest URL, output configuration, or network access | Verify the URL and key in the Live Control Room, keep the key private, confirm the selected protocol matches the output, then restart a test and inspect stream health. |
| Video or audio is missing or unstable | Encoder compatibility, source decoding, or output bandwidth | Check that the source produces the expected tracks, the chosen codecs are accepted, and the connection can sustain the configured total bitrate with headroom. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| The program stops when a file ends or fails | Source composition and failure handling | Make sure the source can advance through its playlist and define behavior for unavailable or undecodable media. Test those cases rather than assuming the output itself supplies a fallback. |
| The stream ends after a host reboot or process crash | Process supervision and startup configuration | Configure the host’s service manager to start Liquidsoap at boot and restart it after failure; add monitoring or alerts. Liquidsoap output documentation alone does not guarantee unattended recovery. |
| Live broadcast is interrupted by a rights warning | Copyright claims or Content ID allowlisting | Review the rights for the flagged content and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting where the music is licensed. Remove content you cannot lawfully stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain an always-on host and Liquidsoap process, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
