FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream Keeps Stopping: Troubleshooting Guide

If your FFmpeg YouTube live stream keeps stopping, first determine whether FFmpeg exited or is still running while YouTube receives too little or invalid video. Note the stop time, save FFmpeg’s complete stderr output and command, then compare them with the timestamped message in YouTube Live Control Room. The cause is not identifiable from the symptom alone; the error and logs point to the right fix.

1. Capture the failure before changing settings

  1. Write down the time the stream stopped or appeared to freeze.
  2. Save the exact FFmpeg command and the complete stderr output, including the final error and process exit status if FFmpeg exited.
  3. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the Health Indicator and its timestamped errors. YouTube says an error remains visible while unresolved; red errors are critical and yellow errors are moderate. YouTube’s live streaming error messages can help identify the category.
  4. Compare the times. A process exit, an input-read failure, an output connection error and an ingestion-health problem are different failures, even if each looks like a stopped stream to viewers.

Change one relevant setting at a time and observe whether the same error returns. This makes it easier to tell whether a correction addressed the cause or merely changed the symptom.

2. Check whether FFmpeg actually stopped

If the FFmpeg process exited

Start with its last stderr message and exit status. They may identify an unreadable input, a decoding problem, or an output failure. The particular diagnosis depends on the command and logs; a stopped stream by itself does not establish that the computer or network is at fault.

If FFmpeg is still running

Check whether it is continuing to read its input and produce output, then compare that activity with YouTube’s health message. FFmpeg being open does not prove that YouTube is receiving valid video. If YouTube reports that video is starved, for example, investigate the video output and upload path rather than assuming the process needs restarting.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Match the health message to the setting it names

YouTube reports separate problems for stream format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframe frequency, resolution and primary/backup stream mismatches. Read the specific message rather than treating every warning as a generic connection failure. The official error-message guide explains the messages shown in Live Control Room.

The Live Streaming API also distinguishes ingestion conditions. For example, videoIngestionStarved means “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” noAudioStream indicates that the ingestion stream has no audio, while openGop signals an open GOP where YouTube requires a closed GOP. Other listed issues include high or low bitrate, high frame rate, unsupported codec, long GOP and mismatched backup-stream settings. See Google’s LiveStream configuration issue reference.

4. Fix bitrate and upload-capacity problems

A bitrate that looks reasonable in isolation may still be too demanding for the connection at the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, choosing a quality the connection can sustain, using representative motion and audio for a test, and monitoring stream health during the event. If the connection cannot support the selected resolution, lower the resolution.

Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the applicable resolution, frame rate and codec. As examples from that table accessed 2026-10-03, for 1080p at 30 fps it lists H.264 at a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and AV1/H.265 at a 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular upload connection can sustain the rate. The table varies by settings, so do not treat either example as a universal target.

  • If YouTube reports high bitrate, reduce the output bitrate or choose a lower resolution/frame rate that fits the connection.
  • If YouTube reports low bitrate or starvation, check that FFmpeg is continuously producing video and that the upload path can sustain the selected profile.
  • If the problem appears only under motion or with audio enabled, test with representative content rather than relying on a static or silent test.

5. Verify the stream format, keyframes and audio

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Follow the exact error for your stream and protocol: YouTube’s error guidance can specify an accepted-format requirement such as H.264 video and AAC audio, while the encoder-settings page lists broader supported settings. Do not assume every codec applies to every ingest configuration.

  • Keyframes and GOP: Set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, two seconds corresponds to 60 frames. YouTube says a closed GOP is optimal for transcoding.
  • Bitrate mode: Use CBR as YouTube recommends. Check the actual output profile if YouTube reports a bitrate or format issue.
  • Audio/video streams: Confirm the output contains the expected video and audio streams. A noAudioStream issue is not fixed by changing video resolution.
  • Frame rate and resolution: Check both against the selected bitrate and the exact health message. YouTube’s settings page lists frame rates up to 60 fps; that does not mean every connection can sustain every resolution at 60 fps.

If you publish both primary and backup streams, YouTube requires matching settings for failover, including resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency and audio settings. A mismatch can prevent the intended failover.

6. Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the failure they cover

FFmpeg’s documented reconnect options are in its HTTP protocol documentation. They can be relevant when FFmpeg reads a live HTTP input: for example, reconnect retries a disconnection before EOF, and reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and reconnects, which can be useful for live or endless streams. The documentation also describes retries for certain HTTP statuses and network errors. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Those HTTP input options are not established as a general repair for a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. FFmpeg describes reconnect as “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit,” but that description belongs to the documented protocol options; it does not promise that adding them will restore a failed YouTube output. For an output failure, diagnose the actual FFmpeg output error and YouTube health message, then consult the documentation for the output protocol in use.

7. Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see What to check Next step
FFmpeg closes at the stop time Final stderr lines and exit status Follow the specific input, encoding or output error shown in the log; do not infer a hardware fault from the exit alone.
FFmpeg runs, but YouTube reports starved video Whether FFmpeg continues reading and emitting video; bitrate and upload capacity Test the upload path, compare settings with YouTube’s bitrate table, and reduce resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the profile.
YouTube reports a bitrate issue Chosen bitrate alongside resolution, frame rate, codec and available upload capacity Adjust the profile using YouTube’s current recommendations and test with representative content.
YouTube reports an audio, video or accepted-format error Output stream count, codec and the exact requirement in the message Correct the named stream or format; do not apply a generic codec change without checking the error.
YouTube reports keyframe, GOP or backup mismatch Keyframe interval, closed GOP, and—if applicable—all primary and backup settings Use YouTube’s two-second keyframe recommendation (maximum four seconds), closed GOP, and matching primary/backup profiles.
FFmpeg loses an HTTP live input Input protocol and its documented reconnect behavior Consider the HTTP reconnect options that match the input failure; do not assume they fix YouTube publishing output.

8. Do not buy hardware without evidence

The available official guidance points first to logs, Live Control Room diagnostics, upload-capacity testing and encoder settings. It does not identify a particular router, cable, computer, capture card or other product as the fix. Consider hardware only when logs or a separate measurement identify a relevant bottleneck.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos without requiring a computer, OBS or home connection to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
