What viewers can see during a livestream
YouTube memberships can include different benefits depending on what a creator enables and offers. Viewers can check the channel’s Join or See perks area for the actual offer; creators should not imply that every possible membership feature is available on their channel.
Native membership signals in live chat
- Badges: Membership badges appear beside members’ names in comments and live chat. Badges can indicate tenure.
- New-member message: When someone joins during a livestream, YouTube displays a bright green New Member message. The new member’s profile picture is pinned at the top of chat for five minutes.
- Members-only chat: A creator can make chat members-only while keeping a public livestream viewable by everyone. This limits who can post, not who can watch. YouTube Help explains: “During public live streams, you can make the chat members-only. Everyone can still view the live stream, but only members can post chats.”
- Milestone chats: Eligible members can send a highlighted message once per month from their second consecutive month of membership. All viewers can see these messages in live chat.
- Custom emoji: Members can use creator-uploaded emoji in live chat. These are not automatically present; the creator must upload them.
YouTube also lists possible benefits such as members-only posts and livestreams, early access to videos, a member recognition shelf, Shorts, and videos. Which of these viewers get depends on the channel’s offer and enabled features.
Configure the benefits you want to display
Set up membership levels and perks
YouTube Help allows up to six membership levels, with one to five perks per level. Higher-priced levels include the perks of lower levels. YouTube reviews proposed levels and perks against its policies before they go live; its Help page says review takes about a day. Check the current membership controls in YouTube Studio and confirm that the benefits you plan to promote are active for the intended level.

Choose accurate, specific wording
Use the channel’s real offer, not a generic promise. For example: “Members get chat badges, custom emoji, and [specific active perk] — see Join → Perks.” This is an editorial example, not official YouTube wording. Replace the bracketed text with a benefit your channel actually provides, and remove any feature you have not enabled.
Add a persistent benefits panel to the stream
A video overlay is useful when you want the offer visible even to viewers who do not open chat or channel menus. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports advanced productions with overlays. OBS Studio does not supply alerts itself, but its official guidance describes embedding third-party web overlays in a scene with a Browser Source. This is a production option, not an endorsement of a particular overlay provider.

Build a readable panel
- Use a short heading, such as “Channel memberships.”
- Show one or two concrete perks that are active for your channel.
- Direct viewers to the channel’s Join or See perks area.
- Keep the panel clear of important gameplay, captions, and other on-screen information. This placement advice is a design recommendation, not a YouTube requirement.
Add it in OBS
- Open the OBS scene used for the YouTube broadcast.
- Add the overlay as a Browser Source if it is web-based, or add the appropriate image or text source for your design.
- Position and size it so it remains legible without obscuring important content.
- Preview the scene and confirm the wording, visibility, and link direction before using it in the live program.
OBS’s Browser Source supports web-based overlays. If you use a third-party overlay, confirm that the provider supports the information and behavior you need; the existence of Browser Source does not establish compatibility for any specific membership-alert service.
Native features or an on-screen overlay?

These approaches do different jobs. Native features show YouTube membership activity and participation controls; an overlay explains the channel’s offer in the video itself. You can use either or both, provided the overlay matches the benefits viewers can actually claim.

Plan for the 24/7 stream and its archive
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived as a single complete video. If a complete archive matters, plan the stream around that limitation rather than assuming the live viewing experience and the replay will behave identically.
YouTube describes encoders as software apps or standalone hardware for advanced production, including overlays and external audio/video equipment. Dedicated hardware is not required solely to show membership benefits: OBS offers a software-based Browser Source path, and the membership features themselves are digital YouTube features.

Troubleshooting
The overlay promises a perk viewers cannot find
Check the membership levels and active perks in YouTube Studio. Update the overlay so it lists only the benefits actually offered at the relevant level; higher-priced levels include lower-level perks, but not every channel feature applies to every level.
The overlay does not appear in the video
Check that the source is present and visible in the active OBS scene, and that the scene is the one being sent to the stream. For a web overlay, verify the Browser Source and preview the scene before going live.

Viewers can watch but cannot post in chat
If the stream is public and chat is members-only, this is expected: everyone can view while only members can post. If that is not the intended participation setting, review the chat setting for the livestream.
A new member’s message or badge is missing
Check what membership features are active and whether the person has joined the channel. A new-member message is associated with someone joining during the livestream; the profile picture pin lasts five minutes. Do not treat the message or pin as a persistent overlay element.
