How to Run Prerecorded Videos on a YouTube Live Stream from an Indian Cloud Server

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast from an Indian cloud server, run FFmpeg on a cloud VM in real time, loop the video if needed, and send the feed to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your YouTube event. First verify that your channel can livestream; then test the encoder settings and preview the event in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.

Before you start: check eligibility and prepare the video

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Its general eligibility page also says a person must be at least 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility requirements for your account and region.

  • A video file that you have the rights to broadcast. Prerecorded does not mean exempt from copyright rules: music, game footage, or other material may be claimed, blocked, or otherwise restricted.
  • A cloud VM with enough capacity to encode your chosen resolution and frame rate, plus reliable outbound bandwidth for the full stream.
  • FFmpeg built with the encoders and RTMPS transport you plan to use.
  • A YouTube stream URL and private stream key for the event.

The sources establish Mumbai locations for AWS (ap-south-1) and Google Cloud (asia-south1), but not a tested VM size, provider price, network rate, or guarantee of service. Check the exact instance family and current availability in your account, then test the actual file and settings on that VM.

Choose and test an Indian cloud VM

A cloud server’s job is to read the media, encode it at broadcast pace, and maintain an outbound connection to YouTube. An India region can be a sensible choice for a creator or audience in India, but the region label alone does not guarantee throughput, viewer latency, capacity, or low cost.

Compare candidate configurations using the current compute price, sustained CPU capacity for your codec and output, outbound bandwidth and data-transfer charges, media-storage location, and your recovery plan. Google Cloud’s location guidance discusses latency, cost, resiliency, and storage proximity; it is written for its managed Live Stream API, so apply it to an ordinary VM only as general location advice, not as a VM requirement. See Google Cloud’s location guidance and AWS region documentation.

Create a YouTube Live event and get its ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the live event.
  2. Choose the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s stream setup help explains these fields and settings such as DVR and latency.
  3. Keep the key secret. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or article. Store it in a protected configuration or secrets mechanism and restrict access to the VM.

For a typical prerecorded broadcast, evaluate RTMPS first. YouTube documents encrypted RTMP over SSL on port 443. Use the exact valid ingestion endpoint and application path provided for your event; do not substitute an endpoint copied from another service. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion requirements.

YouTube also supports HLS and DASH ingestion. Its protocol comparison describes RTMP/RTMPS as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while HLS and DASH are encrypted alternatives that support other codec choices and are generally more suited to high-resolution workflows with higher latency. HLS has additional format requirements. Match the encoder to the selected protocol rather than assuming settings transfer between them.

Set encoder output for YouTube

YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 in its general settings table, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Codec acceptance can depend on the selected ingestion protocol. Choose a profile that matches both the protocol and your source file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Use a mode the VM can sustain and the source can support; do not upscale a low-resolution file expecting extra detail.
  • Bitrate: Choose for the output resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current table, with headroom in the VM’s sustained upload capacity. A bitrate that intermittently exceeds available throughput can cause stream-health problems.
  • Rate control and keyframes: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where supported; keep the interval at or below four seconds.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3 as appropriate for the chosen protocol and source. Check audio presence and levels in the preview.
  • Pixel format and scaling: If the source or FFmpeg build requires conversion, specify compatible output settings rather than assuming the input format will be accepted unchanged.

Upload the file and run FFmpeg

Place the video on the VM or fetch it from storage before the broadcast. Confirm there is enough local space if downloading it, and that its format can be decoded by the installed FFmpeg build. The following is an illustrative command shape for a looping MP4; it is not a tested, provider-verified recipe. The example structure is informed by AWS’s recorded-video FFmpeg workflow for Amazon IVS, whose destination is IVS-specific—not YouTube. Replace the destination with the exact YouTube RTMPS endpoint and key for your event.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv
  'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_HOST/YOUTUBE_APP/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'

-re reads the input at real-time pace, and -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. The command uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and FLV output as a conventional RTMPS shape. Tune resolution, frame rate, bitrate, GOP/keyframe interval, audio, and pixel format for your chosen YouTube profile. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the required encoders and RTMPS transport. See the AWS IVS example only for the recorded-file workflow pattern, not as a YouTube endpoint recipe.

For production, avoid leaving the real stream key in shell history or a world-readable command file. Use a protected config or secrets store, and limit who can read it. The sample uses placeholders only.

Preview, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start FFmpeg before the scheduled event or while it is private/unlisted for a test. YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams ahead of time.
  2. Open the event in Live Control Room and wait for its preview and stream-health indicators. Do not assume a successful FFmpeg connection means the audience sees clean audio and video.
  3. Start the event in the control room when the preview is ready and the event is configured as intended.
  4. Monitor picture, audio, encoder output, and VM resource load through the session. YouTube advises testing before an event, checking preview, and continuously monitoring audio/video quality; see its live-streaming operations tips.
  5. If local recording or failover is part of your plan, test it in advance and verify the resulting archive rather than assuming it is intact.

Troubleshooting common failures

FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube

Check that the URL uses rtmps, that the hostname and application path match the stream details for this event, and that the connection uses port 443. Confirm the key is current and has no accidental spaces or truncation. YouTube identifies an incorrect host, port, or SSL setup among common RTMPS connection-error causes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube flags stream health or encoder settings

Use Live Control Room’s health indicators and preview to identify the reported issue. Recheck CBR, the keyframe interval, codec, bitrate, selected protocol, and actual output resolution and frame rate. Test a lower output mode if the VM cannot encode reliably or the network cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.

The picture freezes or stops when the file ends

Check whether the input file has ended and whether looping is intended. The -stream_loop -1 option in the example repeats a supported input indefinitely; without a loop, a finite file naturally reaches its end.

The connection drops during a long broadcast

Look at FFmpeg logs, VM CPU and memory load, and outbound connectivity to distinguish an encoder overload from a network or ingest interruption. YouTube recommends testing failover when applicable. A cloud VM is not itself a recovery plan: decide how the process will restart, how the key remains protected, and how you will confirm the stream is live again.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization

A video being pre-recorded does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use footage, music, and other media you own or are licensed to use for livestreaming. YouTube may apply copyright claims or restrictions to a live event, and a continuous loop of material does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization. Review the current policies that apply to your channel and the particular material before scheduling a long-running stream.
