Use two separate safeguards: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a failed network output while FFmpeg is still running, and an operating-system service manager can launch FFmpeg at boot and restart it after the process exits. Neither can restore a failed video input, internet connection, powered-off host, invalid stream key, or YouTube-side service. The guidance below applies generally; the cited YouTube and FFmpeg sources do not establish India-specific network reliability or upload-speed figures.
What automatic recovery can—and cannot—do
First identify which part failed. Recovery settings are not interchangeable:
- Temporary output interruption while FFmpeg remains alive: configure the FIFO muxer to attempt recovery of the network output.
- FFmpeg exits: use a service manager to start the process again.
- Host reboot: configure that manager to launch the service at boot.
- Power, internet, input, credentials, or YouTube failure: neither FIFO recovery nor a process supervisor can fix the underlying problem. Restore the failed dependency and check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
These layers can reduce different kinds of interruption, but do not guarantee that viewers will see one uninterrupted event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is not a guarantee of indefinite event continuity for a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance provides the archive qualification.
Configure FFmpeg to retry a network output
Check your installed build first
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer provides output-recovery options including attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, recover_any_error, and max_recovery_attempts. In the current online documentation, recovery is disabled by default, recover_any_error is disabled by default, the recovery wait defaults to five seconds, and max_recovery_attempts=0 means unlimited retries. These are implementation details that may vary by release: check the local documentation or help for the FFmpeg binary you will actually run before relying on them. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the documented RTMP example as a starting point
FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes this illustrative invocation for an RTMP output:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -map 0 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 rtmp://OUTPUT
INPUT and rtmp://OUTPUT are placeholders, not literal values. The example demonstrates FIFO output, FLV as the underlying format, packet dropping on overflow, and recovery attempts with a one-second wait. It is not a tested production command for your source, installed build, or YouTube stream. In particular, choose codecs, mapping, queue behavior, and retry settings to fit your actual media and tolerance for dropped packets or delay; verify the resulting command before deployment. The example and its explanation are in FFmpeg’s documentation.

Recovery operates only while the FFmpeg process remains alive. It is not a substitute for the supervisor in the next section. Also note that a short retry interval does not guarantee a fast or successful reconnect: the destination, credentials, network path, and source must still be usable.
Configure a supervisor to restart an exited process
Run FFmpeg under a service manager appropriate to the host operating system. Configure it to start after boot, restart after an unexpected process exit, wait an appropriate interval before retrying, and retain logs so you can diagnose repeated failures. The exact configuration depends on the service manager and platform; verify its current documentation rather than assuming one directive covers every exit condition. A supervisor can relaunch a process, but it cannot make a missing input file, unavailable network, or invalid stream key work.

After a restart, FFmpeg may reconnect to YouTube, but the supervisor alone cannot establish whether the broadcast is healthy or whether YouTube continues the same event. Check service logs and the stream’s actual status.
Set up the YouTube encoder and stream profile
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Provide those values to FFmpeg’s output configuration; treat the key as a credential and do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or logs you share. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe supplying the URL and key.
- Choose a profile using the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, CBR encoding, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its bitrate recommendations vary with resolution and frame rate; select a value from the current table for your intended output rather than assuming one bitrate fits all streams.
- Measure the host’s outbound capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom; include primary and backup stream bandwidth where applicable. This is general YouTube guidance, not an India-specific speed guarantee. A reliable connection matters because a disruption can break the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test video motion and audio, then monitor both FFmpeg output and Live Control Room stream health. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance describes latency and Auto-start/Auto-stop options. Lower latency can mean more playback buffering; check the current stream configuration and decide whether to enable automatic start or stop.
Test each failure mode before depending on the stream
- Output interruption: simulate or safely create a brief output failure while leaving FFmpeg alive. Confirm logs show recovery attempts and that output resumes. Do not perform a disruptive test on a broadcast you cannot afford to interrupt.
- Process exit: stop or terminate the test process deliberately and verify the service manager relaunches it after the configured delay. Check its logs for both the exit and restart.
- Host reboot: reboot during a planned test window and confirm the service starts automatically after boot and can access its input and credentials.
- End-to-end health: verify stream health in Live Control Room and inspect the viewer-facing watch page. A service marked active does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
Troubleshoot a stream that did not recover
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg remains alive, but output stops or reports a network error | Network output recovery | Confirm the output uses FIFO with recovery enabled; check retry logs, destination URL, stream key, and network reachability. Verify the installed build supports the options. |
| FFmpeg exited and stays down | Process supervision | Check service-manager status and logs, restart policy, delay, command path, permissions, and whether the input is available to the service account. |
| Service is active, but YouTube shows no healthy feed | Encoder, credentials, output, or connectivity | Inspect FFmpeg errors and Live Control Room stream health; verify the URL and key, encoding profile, and outbound connection. |
| Encoder output looks healthy, but viewers report problems | Outbound connectivity or playback | Test the outbound connection and review YouTube’s stream diagnostics. YouTube identifies connectivity as a possible cause when encoder output appears healthy. |
| Quality is poor or stream health is unstable | Source, encoding, host load, or bandwidth | Check source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, archive, chosen bitrate, and available upload capacity. Use YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance. |
| Nothing starts after a power cut | Host power or boot configuration | Restore power, confirm the host rebooted, and check that the service is enabled at boot. A UPS may maintain local power for the computer and network equipment for a limited period depending on load and capacity; it does not fix internet or software failures. |
Local resilience and operating costs
A local 24/7 setup needs an always-on host and a dependable network connection. Account for the host’s power use, any UPS sized for the actual load and desired runtime, and the cost of connectivity. A UPS is optional: it can help with brief local power interruptions but does not restart FFmpeg, restore internet service, or resolve a YouTube-side problem. The reviewed platform guidance provides no India-specific reliability statistic or universally suitable upload speed, so assess your own connection and power conditions.
