Can a 24/7 YouTube Stream Earn Money While Viewers Use Ad Blockers?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, a 24/7 YouTube stream can earn money while some viewers use ad blockers—but neither continuous streaming nor an ad-enabled stream guarantees revenue from every view. The channel must qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), meet the relevant monetization requirements, and enable monetization for the live stream. A blocker may prevent ads from appearing in the affected viewer’s session; YouTube’s guidance does not say that ad blockers themselves disqualify an otherwise eligible channel.

What determines whether a 24/7 stream earns ad revenue?

Three separate conditions matter: the channel’s eligibility, the creator’s monetization settings, and whether YouTube actually serves an ad to a viewer. A stream staying live for hours or days does not, on its own, establish that the channel earns from each view.

  • YPP eligibility: The channel must qualify for YouTube’s revenue-sharing program and comply with its monetization policies. YouTube may show ads on content from channels that are not eligible to receive a share, so seeing an ad is not proof that the creator earns from that view. • Monetization setup: For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue, creators must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. They also need to enable monetization for the live stream. YouTube channel monetization policies.
  • Ad delivery: YouTube decides whether an ad slot serves, and it does not guarantee an ad for every slot or viewer. The viewer may continue watching when no ad runs.

How ad blockers affect viewers—and what is known about revenue

YouTube says viewers using ad-blocking software or browser extensions may not see ads. For a 24/7 stream, that means the blocker can remove ad opportunities in an affected viewer’s session. YouTube’s published guidance does not quantify the revenue effect for an individual stream or give a blocker-specific loss percentage. It also does not establish how many viewers use blockers or how their effects differ for continuous streams. Troubleshoot ads not showing on your video.

Even when a viewer is not using a blocker, an ad may not run on a particular view. YouTube’s live-stream guidance puts it plainly: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Monetize your live stream.

Live-stream ad controls: possible opportunities, not promises

With live monetization enabled, YouTube turns on pre-roll and display ads automatically. Creators can choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-roll approaches; each creates possible ad opportunities, not guaranteed impressions. YouTube says automatic mid-rolls are recommended. Scheduled breaks can be set at 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minute intervals, or a creator can insert breaks manually. The system still decides whether an ad serves, and viewers may receive ads at different times.

YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. This was YouTube’s January 2024 platform-reported comparison across 207 countries, averaging channels that enabled the feature against channels that did not. It is not a guarantee, a measure of ad-blocker losses, or necessarily a causal estimate for any individual channel. Check current options in Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed ad cadence or yield. YouTube also describes a Live Control Room delay feature for automatic mid-rolls during important moments.

Other YouTube revenue routes

Eligible creators may have access to revenue beyond live-stream ads, subject to YPP eligibility and the terms of each feature. YouTube lists YouTube Premium revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping among its monetization features. An ad-blocking viewer should not be assumed to generate any of these other forms of revenue; availability and participation depend on the channel, feature, and viewer. How to review a stream’s reported performance

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics for the channel.
  2. Use the Live filter to review revenue attributed to live streams and live replays, as described in YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
  3. Interpret the metrics carefully. RPM is creator-focused and reflects total revenue after revenue share across listed sources; playback-based CPM is advertiser-focused and relates to monetized playbacks and advertiser spend before revenue share. Neither metric, as described in YouTube’s documentation, isolates revenue lost specifically to ad blockers.

Analytics can show the revenue YouTube reports for your content, but it cannot establish that a particular difference was caused by blockers. Avoid treating a change in revenue as blocker-attributed evidence without a YouTube metric that makes that attribution.

Policy and rights still apply to continuous streams

YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other video formats. YPP terms, originality, advertiser suitability, rights, and valid traffic all matter. Invalid traffic can lead to revenue adjustments, ad limits, payment delays, or loss of monetization. Do not ask viewers to click ads or use traffic-boosting schemes. A continuous loop does not exempt a channel or its content from those requirements.
