Instead, recreate the encoder setup on the cloud host, test its connection to YouTube, then coordinate a cutover from the PC. Keep the old setup available until the cloud stream is stable so you have a rollback option.
What moves—and what does not
The encoder workload moves: your scenes, media, overlays, settings and automation must be recreated or transferred to the new host. YouTube remains the destination. Its Live Control Room provides the current Stream URL and stream key that the encoder uses; treat the key like a password and do not expose it in screenshots, scripts or logs.
This is a migration plan, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. A cloud host, encoder process or YouTube ingest connection can fail. Plan to monitor the stream and retain a recovery path.
1. Inventory the PC setup
Before renting or configuring a server, record what the existing encoder actually needs. OBS is one example of encoder software; its resource requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.

- Scenes, sources, overlays, transitions and audio routing.
- Video and audio files, fonts, plugins, scripts and other dependencies.
- Output resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate and keyframe interval.
- Source file paths and any automation or scheduled restart procedure.
- The YouTube stream schedule, latency setting and current stream health baseline.
Copy required assets to the host and recreate sources using paths that exist there. A scene that references a local drive, desktop capture or plugin unavailable on the server will not behave like it did on the PC.
2. Choose a host for the real workload
Do not choose a cloud instance based on a generic “streaming server” label or price alone. Check operating-system support, hardware encoding or CPU capacity, graphics/display support, sustained outbound bandwidth, persistent-traffic policies, monitoring and restart options, backup arrangements, and total cost for continuous operation. Available guidance does not establish a universal CPU, GPU, RAM or provider plan for 24/7 streaming.

For Linux OBS specifically, the OBS Project lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and an X window system or Wayland among its basic requirements. A minimal headless server should not be presumed compatible; check the [OBS system requirements](https://obsproject.com/kb/system-requirements) for the selected platform and software configuration.
3. Size outbound bandwidth and encoder settings
YouTube says total outgoing bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For a cloud host, evaluate sustained outbound capacity rather than only a short peak-speed figure. If you send primary and backup streams, count both streams in the bandwidth requirement.

These are YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations, not a complete server specification. The figures do not account for every scene, encoder or network condition. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the format you intend to send.
4. Configure the encoder and YouTube ingest
- Install the encoder and recreate the production. Set up the required scenes, assets, audio and automation on the host. Match the PC’s working output first rather than changing several variables during migration.
- Get current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, select or create the stream and copy its Stream URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube describes these settings in Manage live stream settings.
- Prefer RTMPS for ordinary live content. YouTube recommends RTMPS for most ordinary user content. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS; YouTube’s endpoint uses port 443. Use the valid RTMPS protocol, endpoint and path shown for your stream. The connection’s hostname matters for TLS authentication through SNI. See YouTube’s RTMPS guide.
- Keep credentials private. Restrict access to the stream key and any configuration containing it. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder before resuming.
5. Test before cutover
Run the cloud encoder as a private or unlisted test before replacing the production feed. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health.

- Confirm that the Live Control Room preview has picture and clean audio.
- Check the reported stream health and compare the observed bitrate with your intended setting.
- Watch for missing media, incorrect paths, overlays, dropped frames or audio routing differences.
- If you configured a backup encoder, test failover before relying on it.
YouTube’s streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring. Its guidance is operational advice, not a promise that a stream or host will stay online indefinitely.

- Choose a quiet cutover window and have access to both the PC and cloud host.
- Stop the PC encoder, then start the cloud encoder using the planned YouTube stream details. Avoid having two encoders unexpectedly send to the same production stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health immediately after switching.
- Keep the PC configuration and assets intact until the cloud setup has proved stable. If the cloud encoder cannot deliver, stop it and restore the known-working PC setup.

7. Monitor after the move
A 24/7 process needs an owner and a recovery plan. Monitor the encoder process, outbound connection, YouTube stream health and audio/video output. Decide how the process will be restarted after an application crash or host reboot, and how you will be alerted if it stops. Test these procedures rather than assuming a server restart policy or backup ingest will restore the full production automatically.
Troubleshooting common migration failures
