How to Calculate YouTube Ad Revenue per 1,000 Live Stream Views

Divide a live stream’s estimated ad revenue by its views, then multiply by 1,000. For example, if YouTube reports $240 in estimated ad revenue and 30,000 views for the same stream and reporting period, the result is $8 per 1,000 views. That is an illustrative calculation, not a typical YouTube rate: there is no universal payout per 1,000 live views.

Calculate your live-stream ad revenue per 1,000 views

Use this formula:

(Estimated ad revenue ÷ views) × 1,000

Use estimated ad revenue—not total estimated revenue—if you want an ad-only figure. Match the revenue and view counts by reporting period and content scope: for example, the same live stream over the same dates. The $240 and 30,000-view example gives ($240 ÷ 30,000) × 1,000 = $8.

This is a custom rate you calculate from your channel’s data. YouTube does not identify it as a separate official metric called “live-stream ad revenue per 1,000 views.”

Find the right figures in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio Analytics and go to the Revenue reporting views. Use the estimated ad revenue figure rather than total estimated revenue, which may include other kinds of creator revenue.
  2. Filter or break down the report by Live where available. YouTube says live-stream and live-replay ad revenue can be broken down in Analytics using the Live filter. Check that the report covers the stream and dates you intend to measure.
  3. Get the matching view count. Use the views for the same content and period as the revenue figure. YouTube notes that some interaction and revenue reports are unavailable when filtering strictly for Live, so use the Revenue report’s live content breakdown when available and verify the scope of both figures.
  4. Apply the formula. Divide estimated ad revenue by views and multiply by 1,000. Keep the result labeled as estimated ad revenue per 1,000 views, not a guaranteed payout.

YouTube’s live reporting and filter limitations are described in its live-stream metrics guidance and Analytics revenue guidance.

Do not confuse ad revenue with RPM or CPM

Metric What it measures How to use it
Your calculated ad revenue per 1,000 views Estimated ad revenue divided by total views, multiplied by 1,000. Use for an ad-only comparison of your own live-stream results when the periods and content scope match.
RPM Total creator revenue per 1,000 views. It can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. Use when you want a broader measure of creator revenue, not ad revenue alone.
CPM Advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s revenue share. It is not the creator’s earnings per 1,000 total views.
Playback-based CPM Advertiser cost per 1,000 video playbacks that included an ad. It is not the creator’s earnings per 1,000 total views either.

The definitions matter because impressions, monetized playbacks, and views are different counts. A view can have no ad: ads may be off, the content may not be advertiser-friendly, a suitable ad may not be available, or delivery may be affected by targeting, geography, recent ad exposure, or a Premium subscription. A playback can also contain more than one ad impression. See YouTube’s definitions of revenue metrics.

Why the rate changes between streams

  • How many views get ads: If total views rise but ad-served playbacks do not rise in step, ad revenue per 1,000 total views can fall.
  • Ad delivery and mid-roll choices: YouTube supports automatic or manually managed live mid-rolls. Automatic mid-roll frequency can be set to low, medium, or high, and scheduled breaks have documented intervals. These settings create opportunities for ads; they do not guarantee that an ad will serve.
  • Audience and inventory: Audience geography, targeting, available ad inventory, and ad formats can affect ad delivery and advertiser-side CPM.
  • Eligibility and viewing context: Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium earnings on live videos require acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube also says ads are turned off for a live stream in an embedded player with autoplay.
  • Later estimate adjustments: Estimated monthly revenue may change due to invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and some campaign types. YouTube says adjustments happen after one week and again in the middle of the following month.

YouTube’s live monetization guidance states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its partner earnings overview also says: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.”

What YouTube’s automatic mid-roll figure does—and does not—show

YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. The comparison was measured in January 2024 and averaged across 207 countries. It is a historical platform comparison of revenue per hour—not a per-1,000-view benchmark or a promised increase for an individual creator. The figure is reported in YouTube’s live monetization guidance.

Compare your own streams fairly

Before deciding whether a stream or setting performed better, line up the date range and content scope. Then compare the factors that help explain the result:
