Most often, OBS stops repeating a church stream video because the video is a Media Source and its Loop setting is off. If playback changes when you switch scenes, check source visibility and restart behavior instead. If OBS keeps playing locally but YouTube freezes or drops frames, investigate stream delivery—not the loop setting.
First, identify the OBS source
OBS has two commonly confused ways to play video:
- Media Source: Plays a media file. Its Loop option is off by default, so playback ends unless you enable it.
- VLC Video: Plays a playlist through VLC. Its Loop Playlist option is on by default, but its visibility behavior can stop playback when the source is hidden.
To identify yours, look in the OBS Sources list and open the source’s properties. OBS documents these settings in its Media Sources guide (published January 11, 2022; labels may differ in later versions). VLC Video appears only when VLC is installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
If the video ends and stays on its last frame—or disappears
- In the Sources list, open the video’s Media Source properties.
- Check Loop. OBS documents this as the setting that makes the file play again after playback completes; its default is off.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends. If enabled, the source is hidden when the file finishes, which can make an unlooped file look as if it vanished.
- Test playback through the end. Confirm whether it starts again, holds its last frame, or disappears.
Do not assume that Close file when inactive disables looping. OBS describes it as unloading the file when the source is inactive; returning to the source may involve a reload delay. Check its behavior, but the documented setting is not a replacement for the Loop checkbox.
If it stops or starts over when you switch scenes
Media Source
Check Restart playback when source becomes active. This controls whether playback restarts when the source becomes active in the current scene and visible. Then switch scenes while watching the source in the preview: determine whether it pauses, disappears, or starts again from the beginning.

VLC Video
Open the VLC Video source properties and inspect Visibility Behaviour. Its documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. That can explain why a playlist appears to stop or begin again after a scene change even though Loop Playlist is enabled.
Scene visibility and file repetition are separate behaviors. First verify that the source is configured to repeat; then adjust activation or visibility behavior to match how your church scenes are arranged.

If OBS plays normally but YouTube freezes
Compare the OBS preview and a local recording with what viewers see on YouTube. This separates local media playback from the stream’s encoding and delivery.
- Check OBS’s encoder output and error messages, CPU load, and the local archive. YouTube recommends these checks when diagnosing stream quality or playback issues: YouTube’s live-streaming encoder guidance.
- If the local output is healthy but YouTube is not, test the outbound internet connection. A problem sending the encoded video can affect the live feed even when the video source itself is playing.
- If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects, check the connection to the ingest server and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable.
Dropped frames point to a connection or bitrate problem; they do not, by themselves, mean the Media Source loop is broken. Likewise, changing a stream key will not make a local file repeat.

If OBS cannot start the YouTube stream
A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed. If OBS reports an error when starting, YouTube advises replacing the key in the encoder. Check the key and the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room, then try starting again. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains the key and auto-start/auto-stop controls.
Auto-start and auto-stop affect whether the encoder can start or stop the live feed. They are separate from the OBS Media Source setting that repeats a local video. If the stream starts but its video stops at the file’s end, return to the source properties and check Loop.
