For a 24/7 YouTube channel that loops prerecorded podcast episodes, cloud streaming is usually the simpler fit: the playlist can run without your computer staying on. Choose OBS when the channel needs live hosts, guest conversations, scene changes, or hands-on production. The choice is about workflow, not a guarantee that either setup will never fail.
Choose based on what the channel broadcasts

If the “podcast” is a live conversation, a prerecorded playlist cannot replace the real-time production workflow. If the goal is to keep past episodes playing while you are away, a cloud playlist is purpose-built for that pattern.
What OBS requires for a continuous stream
OBS runs on your own machine, so the stream depends on the computer, OBS, and your outgoing internet connection staying available. OBS’s published requirements are compatibility baselines, not a guarantee that a system will stream successfully; CPU load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements list DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics and Windows 10 or 11 for Windows; Intel or Apple Silicon and macOS 11 or later for macOS; and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics with X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix.
Those baselines do not identify a suitable PC build for every 24/7 show. A simple static scene and a complex multi-source production can place different demands on a machine. OBS’s overview guide covers stream setup and automatic reconnect; reconnect is configurable, but it does not remove the need to monitor the broadcast.

Set OBS and YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. For RTMP/RTMPS, it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.

These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection can sustain the stream. Match your output to the source and your available upload capacity; remember that the bitrate figures above describe video, not a guaranteed total connection requirement. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion before going live, then checking stream-health messages during the broadcast. Its instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Set up a prerecorded 24/7 stream
For a continuous podcast loop, prepare the files and playlist before selecting a delivery method. Use recordings you own or have permission to rebroadcast. A live-stream setup does not grant rights to music, clips, guest recordings, or other material inside an episode; check the permissions for each asset and YouTube’s applicable policies before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
- Prepare the episodes. Check that the files play correctly, have usable audio levels, and are cleared for continuous rebroadcast. Decide the episode order and whether the playlist should repeat.
- Choose the workflow. Use OBS if you need live sources or scene control. For uploaded-file playback while your computer is off, select a cloud playlist service and check its current storage, output, playlist, destination, recovery, and channel-access details.
- Connect the YouTube stream. Follow the chosen workflow’s current instructions to connect the channel. Treat a stream key as a credential: do not post it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast, and replace it if exposed.
- Test before relying on the loop. Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test, verify audio and video, and confirm the stream-health status in YouTube Studio. Check again after the intended playlist begins playing.
- Monitor and maintain it. A continuous stream still needs occasional checks for playback, connection, account, and rights issues. Reconnection features can help after a dropped connection, but are not a substitute for monitoring.
Cloud services: compare the offer, not just the label
Cloud services are not interchangeable. Check whether the provider is offering a remote computer you operate or a playlist broadcaster that plays uploaded files, then compare channel destinations, storage, playlist controls, output settings, recovery behavior, and current price. - YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the connection and encoder output against YouTube’s recommended settings; test with similar motion and audio, and use YouTube’s live stream-health messages to narrow down the issue.
- OBS stops sending after a connection interruption: Check OBS’s automatic reconnect configuration and verify the computer and network are available. Reconnect behavior does not ensure the stream will resume correctly in every case.
- Playback stalls or repeats the wrong episode: Verify the playlist order and file playback in the service you selected, then confirm the intended YouTube destination is receiving the feed.
- The computer cannot keep up: Reduce workload by reviewing encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS says its minimum system requirements alone do not guarantee successful streaming.
- A cloud offer does not meet the need: Recheck whether it supports your destination, playlist and storage needs, output quality, recovery expectations, and current plan terms before moving the channel.
Estimate cost and workload together
A local OBS setup shifts the ongoing burden to your computer and connection; its price depends on hardware you already have or choose to acquire, and the needed specification cannot be inferred from minimum compatibility requirements alone. A cloud option adds a service charge but can remove the need to keep your home computer running for prerecorded playback. Compare the service’s current capacity and limits with your actual episode library and expected stream duration, not only the headline monthly price.
