OBS’s media playlist and a playlist hosted on YouTube are different things: the documented workflow does not automatically import or synchronize a YouTube playlist into OBS.
The setup described here uses YouTube’s general workflow and applies to creators in India; the official documentation cited does not identify a separate India-only procedure.
What “automate a YouTube live playlist” can mean
There are three separate jobs, and setting up one does not automatically do the others:
- Choose what plays: an OBS VLC Video source can play a playlist of media files stored on your computer.
- Schedule the YouTube event: YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room creates and manages the broadcast event.
- Automate controls: the YouTube Live Streaming API can manage broadcast resources, while OBS WebSocket lets external tools control OBS scenes and sources.
A YouTube-hosted playlist is not the same as an OBS playlist of local files. The official instructions below document the local-media workflow and YouTube playlist management separately; they do not establish a built-in feature that makes OBS fetch and follow a YouTube playlist automatically.

Check YouTube eligibility before preparing the event
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help also says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance and its encoder setup instructions.
Build a playlist from local video files in OBS
Prepare the media and VLC
For one file, OBS’s Media Source can play common local audio and video formats and can loop that file. For a multi-item playlist, use VLC Video. Install VLC first; OBS documentation says the VLC Video source requires it, and recommends matching VLC’s architecture to OBS—for example, use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Consult the OBS media sources guide.
Add and configure the playlist
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the video.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If the option is absent, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS, then reopen OBS.
- Create or select the source, then use its playlist controls to add the local files in the intended order.
- Choose Loop if the list should repeat, or Shuffle if playback should use a varying order. These affect media playback only; they do not schedule a YouTube event or control when a broadcast starts.
- Confirm the source is visible in the preview and that its audio reaches the OBS audio mixer. Play through the files you intend to use before going live.
If you need a camera, game capture, microphone, or other inputs alongside prerecorded media, add and arrange those sources in the same scene as needed. A capture device may be required for some external video inputs; it is not a universal requirement for playlist playback.

Schedule the YouTube live event and connect OBS
Create or schedule the event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to reach the Live Control Room.
- Open the Manage tab and choose to schedule a stream. You can create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous one.
- Enter the event details, including title, description, privacy, and scheduled time. Review the selected audience and other applicable settings before saving.
- Publish the schedule. YouTube says a scheduled stream may appear to subscribers as upcoming, where viewers can select Notify me. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Send the OBS feed to YouTube
- In the Live Control Room, open the scheduled stream’s encoder settings and copy the stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if it is offered in your OBS version, and enter the stream details. If using a custom server configuration, enter the URL and key in the corresponding fields.
- Apply the settings, return to the scene with the VLC Video playlist, and verify video and audio in the OBS preview and mixer.
- Start the encoder feed in OBS. Confirm that YouTube receives it in the Live Control Room, then start the event there when you are ready to broadcast. The encoder feed and the YouTube event are related but distinct controls; follow the status shown in Studio.
YouTube’s encoder instructions cover scheduling or reusing a stream and connecting with its URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update OBS with the replacement.

Choose the right level of automation
Studio scheduling for a single event
For a one-off broadcast, create the event in the Live Control Room and start the OBS encoder when needed. This is the most direct documented path and requires no API integration.
YouTube Live Streaming API for programmatic broadcasts
If your goal is to create or manage broadcast events through software, use the YouTube Live Streaming API. Its model distinguishes a liveBroadcast resource (the event) from a liveStream resource (the encoder settings and feed). The API documentation describes binding a stream resource to scheduled broadcast resources, including a recurring-broadcast pattern. API automation does not itself make OBS play a YouTube-hosted playlist.

OBS WebSocket for scene and source control
For external control of OBS scenes or sources, OBS WebSocket is included with OBS Studio 28 and later. Enable it in OBS’s WebSocket server settings and require authentication; protect its credentials as you would other access secrets. This controls OBS, not YouTube’s playlist contents or event schedule by itself. See the OBS remote-control guide.
Copyright and unattended-operation checks
- Make sure you have the rights or permissions needed to stream every video and audio track in the playlist. A file playing correctly in OBS does not establish that you may broadcast it.
- Test the actual sequence before relying on it: confirm each file loads, transitions as expected, audio is present, and the intended loop or shuffle behavior works.
- Check YouTube’s event status and OBS’s connection before the scheduled start. The documented features do not guarantee uninterrupted unattended operation or automatic recovery after every outage.
- Keep the computer running OBS, the media files available, and the network connection active while using this local workflow. A scheduled YouTube event alone does not make OBS run or send a feed.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources
Install VLC, confirm its architecture matches OBS, and restart OBS. VLC Video depends on the VLC installation; a Media Source remains an option for a single file.

The video plays but the stream has no sound
Check the OBS audio mixer while the VLC source is playing, and verify that the source’s audio is not muted. Confirm the issue in the encoder preview before starting the event.
The playlist stops after one pass
Reopen the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop. Shuffle changes the order of playlist playback; it is not a substitute for looping.
A scheduled event exists, but nothing is live
Scheduling creates the YouTube event, not the outgoing OBS feed. Start the encoder in OBS, wait for YouTube to receive it, and use the Live Control Room to start or manage the broadcast.
