If OBS’s Network Dropped Frames counter is climbing, the likely issue is that the connection from your computer to the streaming ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the bitrate you set. That does not, by itself, show that Indian broadband as a whole—or your encoder or computer—is at fault. Check the counter first, then test the connection path, bitrate and ingest server.
What OBS network-dropped frames mean
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS discards frames rather than letting the stream buffer. The cause may lie on the local network, the ISP route, the path to the selected ingest server, or in a bitrate that exceeds what the connection can reliably upload. The counter alone cannot identify which one. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide distinguishes network drops from rendering lag and encoding lag, which require different diagnosis.
A download speed result—or even a single high upload result—does not establish that your connection can sustain an upload to a particular ingest server throughout a 24/7 stream. Brief upload dips may be hidden by an average or a speed test taken at another time.
Diagnose the stream in this order
- Confirm the counter. In OBS, open View > Stats and check whether Network Dropped Frames is rising. Consult the OBS log as well. If only rendering lag or encoding lag is increasing, follow the relevant OBS guidance for that counter rather than treating it as a broadband upload problem.
- Compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi. Run a comparable stream or sustained upload over Ethernet and see whether network drops change. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can help you make this comparison, but it cannot fix ISP congestion or a problem farther along the route.
- Lower the bitrate based on sustained upload. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guarantee of a safe setting. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, observe it over time and leave headroom for ordinary variation and other household traffic. Also respect the streaming platform’s bitrate limits. There is no single bitrate that can be recommended without measurements of your line and stream.
- Test another ingest server. If your platform offers another ingest server, change only that setting and compare the result over a similar observation period. A different outcome helps narrow down the path, but does not prove which network operator is responsible.
- Check local network software and equipment. OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-priority utilities, outdated drivers, modem or router connectivity, faulty cables, network cards, switches and extenders as possible contributors. Try reversible checks first, changing one thing at a time. OBS’s TCP-pacing and network-optimization steps apply to Windows; its IPv4-only suggestion should be reverted to the IPv4/IPv6 default if it makes no difference.
- Escalate a persistent problem. If the steps above do not resolve the drops, contact your ISP with timestamps, OBS logs, the selected ingest server, configured bitrate, wired-versus-Wi-Fi results and upload observations from the affected period. OBS notes that route congestion or changes on the ISP side may be outside your control.
OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide was updated September 30, 2024. Its 75% figure is a practical starting point, not a universal rule for unattended streaming.

Why a 24/7 stream can drop frames when a speed test looks fine
A continuous stream needs an adequate upload path over time, not just a good result during a brief test. A short dip in available upload can fall below the stream’s configured bitrate and cause dropped frames even if the connection looks fast at other times. A 2021 live-video ingest study reported bursty frame drops when available network bandwidth became insufficient for OBS’s configured bitrate; some observed bursts reached two seconds’ worth of frames. The study also reported average stall ratios of 3.5%, 1.0% and 2.1% across three services under its controlled test conditions. Those are results from that study’s setup, not estimates for Indian broadband or your stream. Read the 2021 study.
For diagnosis, keep the content and observation period comparable while testing wired versus Wi-Fi, a lower bitrate, and different ingest servers. Record whether the network-dropped-frame count and observed bitrate change over time.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce frame dropping during variable capacity. It does not fix the underlying connection issue and may reduce video quality. For a nature stream, watch the output for quality changes if you enable it; a stream that stays connected at a visibly lower bitrate may not meet your quality goal.
Separate OBS upload drops from viewer buffering
If OBS reports no network-dropped frames but viewers say the stream buffers, do not assume your broadband upload is the cause. Viewers use different networks, devices and locations. Check OBS’s counters first; then consider the stream bitrate and whether the platform provides transcoding for viewers with slower connections. OBS discusses this distinction in its connection troubleshooting guidance.

What Indian broadband rules do—and do not—tell you
TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum download or upload speed. Providers must state typical speeds in their tariff offerings; TRAI’s broadband FAQ says that at least 90% of measured samples during testing must meet or exceed those declared typical speeds. That requirement does not establish that your individual line will sustain a particular streaming bitrate at every hour or reach a particular live-streaming server without loss or congestion. TRAI’s MySpeed portal is a measurement resource, not a current ranking of Indian providers or a diagnosis of international routing. The publication date of the surfaced TRAI broadband FAQ is not stated.
What to record before contacting support
- Date and time of each affected period, and whether drops are continuous or recurring.
- OBS log and the exact network-dropped-frame count or percentage.
- Configured bitrate and observed bitrate over time.
- Streaming platform and selected ingest server, including whether another server changed the symptom.
- Whether the computer used Ethernet or Wi-Fi, plus relevant router, modem and network-software details.
- Repeated upload observations taken during the affected period—not only a download result or a test from another time.
This is a practical set of diagnostic details, not a prescribed TRAI complaint format. No speed-test result or single counter can establish, on its own, whether the cause is your home network, ISP route or destination-specific path.
