To stream multiple prerecorded podcast episodes on YouTube with OBS, add them to an OBS VLC Video Source, set the playlist to loop or shuffle, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC too. Test the playlist and YouTube preview before making the stream public.
Before you start
- Have the podcast audio or video files saved locally on the computer running OBS, and confirm they play correctly.
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on it; match VLC’s 64-bit or 32-bit version to your OBS installation. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Use only episodes, music, artwork, and other material you are authorized to livestream. A file being available to download or listen to does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- Have access to YouTube Studio so you can create or schedule an encoder livestream and retrieve its stream URL and key.
Build the podcast playlist in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add or select a scene for the broadcast. Scenes can combine media with other sources, such as a still image, branding, or a host camera; add visual elements separately if you want them on screen. The OBS Sources Guide explains how sources fit into scenes.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources dock, click the add-source button and choose VLC Video Source. Add the local episode files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Choose playback behavior. In the source properties, enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list continuously. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback. OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default, but verify both settings rather than relying on defaults. More detail is in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Check the scene output. Confirm the expected image is visible and the audio meters move while an episode plays. Adjust the source layout and audio levels before sending the stream.
Playlist source or single-file source?
| OBS source | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source | Multiple local episodes played as a playlist | Supports playlist loop and shuffle; requires VLC installed with matching OBS bitness. |
| Media Source | One local media file | Provides a simpler single-file setup with a loop option; it is not the playlist source described in OBS’s guide. |
For a single episode that should repeat, use Media Source and its loop control. For a sequence of episodes, use VLC Video Source.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s current prompts for stream visibility and event details. Google’s encoder livestream setup guide covers this workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it on screen. Use the key for the intended event and replace it if it is exposed.
- Set OBS’s video and audio output for YouTube, then start streaming from OBS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder livestreams. Its current guidance for codecs, resolution, bitrate, and keyframes is in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
- Wait for the signal to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that the correct picture and podcast audio are present and that stream health is good. For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready; sending a feed from OBS and making the scheduled event live are separate actions.
Choose encoder settings that fit your connection
Use YouTube’s current settings table for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than guessing a bitrate. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ingest protocol. Confirm the current recommendations in YouTube’s live encoder settings, since the appropriate bitrate depends on output resolution and available upload capacity.
For a podcast that is primarily spoken audio, a static image or simple scene may be sufficient visually, but the video encoder still needs a supported resolution and stable upload connection. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen output, lower the resolution or bitrate to a level it can reliably send.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
RTMPS or HLS?
Use RTMPS for this standard OBS-to-YouTube workflow. YouTube documents HLS ingestion for compatible encoder and codec situations, including certain HDR scenarios, but it involves additional configuration and higher latency than RTMP. HLS is not needed for a basic prerecorded podcast playlist; consult YouTube’s HLS setup guide only if your encoder requires it.
Test the full playlist before going live
Run a complete rehearsal before promoting or scheduling the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio and video quality in its livestreaming tips.

- If looping is enabled, test the end of the list and verify playback returns to the beginning.
- Check that each episode has audible, consistent-enough audio and that OBS’s meters respond.
- Inspect YouTube’s preview for the expected scene, picture, and sound before selecting Go live for a scheduled stream.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast and be ready to adjust output settings if YouTube reports problems.
Microphone and visuals are optional
A live microphone is not required when OBS is only playing prerecorded episodes. Add one if a host will introduce episodes, comment between them, or otherwise speak live. YouTube lists microphones and headphones among common encoder-stream hardware, but says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started; see its hardware setup guidance. A still image, show artwork you have rights to use, or a camera can be added as a separate OBS source.
Troubleshooting common problems
VLC Video Source is missing or will not load the playlist
Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC; mismatched bitness can prevent the VLC source from working correctly. Confirm that the media files are available on the streaming computer and play locally.

The playlist plays only once
Open the VLC Video Source properties and check Loop Playlist. The documented default is enabled, but the actual source setting may have been changed. If you meant to repeat one file rather than a playlist, use Media Source and enable its loop option.
Episodes play in an unexpected order
Review the playlist order in the VLC Video Source properties and disable Shuffle Playlist if you need a fixed sequence. Shuffle is documented as off by default, but verify the setting.

YouTube preview has no audio or the wrong picture
Check that the intended scene is selected, the source is visible, and the episode is playing. Watch OBS’s audio meters, then inspect the YouTube preview before making the event live. Recheck the playlist transition as well as the opening episode.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed
Confirm OBS is streaming, and carefully re-enter the stream URL and key from the correct YouTube event. Check the Live Control Room for its preview and stream-health status. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

Stream health is poor or playback stalls
Compare your OBS output resolution and bitrate with YouTube’s current table, then choose settings your upload connection can sustain. Follow YouTube’s H.264, CBR, keyframe, and audio-format guidance rather than raising bitrate beyond available upload capacity.
