For a more reliable archive, plan broadcast sessions shorter than 12 hours and record a local copy.
What a 24/7 OBS stream does—and what it does not
OBS is the encoder: it takes the video and audio sources configured on your computer and sends them to YouTube. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room manages the viewer-facing broadcast and shows its preview and stream health. Both sides need to be set up and checked.
A continuous stream can keep worship content available to viewers, but it does not guarantee continuous service, a complete archive, or unattended recovery. A computer, power, internet connection, capture hardware, OBS, and YouTube can each become a point of failure. Decide who will check the stream and respond to problems before making it a 24/7 commitment.
If the aim is to keep a pre-recorded worship video or playlist looping, OBS can send that content as a live encoder feed. If the aim is a live camera and congregation feed, configure your existing cameras and sound system as OBS sources. The two workflows have different production and rights needs.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the broadcast
- Enable live streaming. The YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube currently lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guide.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live. Set up a stream in Live Control Room, choosing its title, visibility, and schedule as appropriate. For encoder-specific setup, see YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it works like a credential that lets an encoder send content to your channel. Do not show it on screen, include it in a public document, or share it beyond trusted operators. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the provided stream key and server details if OBS requests them. Treat the key as secret even when using a saved OBS profile.
Configure OBS for a stable worship feed
Build the scene from the church’s actual sources
Add the camera, media, and audio sources the church intends to use, then confirm their framing, levels, and order in the OBS preview. An existing sound system may need an audio interface to feed the computer; a camera may need a capture card. Neither is universally required. Check the mixer output, camera output, computer ports, and operating-system compatibility before buying or connecting hardware.
For a pre-recorded video or playlist, check that playback advances and loops as intended before starting the broadcast. For a camera-led service, rehearse the transitions and verify that the audio reaching OBS is the intended mixer output rather than room sound or a muted input.
Use settings the connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video encoding up to 60 fps. For an ordinary worship feed, a 1080p30 H.264 setup is a reasonable starting point; higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if the church’s upload connection cannot sustain it. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewers.

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a tested preset for your church. Configure the encoder settings under OBS Settings > Output and Settings > Video, using the labels available in your OBS version. You can use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then check the result against YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. Leave upload headroom rather than choosing a bitrate at the limit of a variable connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMeasure upload stability and rehearse the real program
Run a test with the same camera movement, video playback, and audio mix you expect during worship. Check OBS’s preview and audio meters, then verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before making a broadcast public. An increasing OBS “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate; reduce the load or address the connection rather than assuming viewers are receiving a clean feed. See the OBS Help Portal and YouTube’s streaming settings guide.
Test privately or as an unlisted stream before the first public service. Confirm picture, speech, music, transitions, and the end-to-end audio level using a viewer device where possible. YouTube recommends including representative movement and audio in a test and reviewing stream health.

Plan continuity without losing the replay
A single broadcast lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured at all by YouTube, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That makes one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast a poor choice if the church expects a complete YouTube archive or reliable rewind. YouTube’s guidance is explicit that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; see Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.
If the archive matters
- Plan broadcast sessions shorter than 12 hours rather than letting one session run indefinitely.
- Choose a transition point and operator process for ending one session and starting the next. Test that handoff privately or unlisted before relying on it in public.
- Record a local copy as a second archive. In OBS, use the recording controls alongside the stream and confirm beforehand that the recording is being written and can be played back. A local file is a separate safeguard; it does not make a YouTube archive complete by itself.
- Check the resulting YouTube replay after each session, especially after the first handoff, rather than assuming every stream was archived in full.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes a default live-stream resource that can exist indefinitely, but that API detail is not a promise that an individual broadcast will have an indefinite archive or DVR. See the LiveStreams API documentation.
If viewer continuity matters more than a complete replay
An uninterrupted stream avoids a planned session turnover, but it gives up confidence in a complete YouTube archive once the stream passes 12 hours, and DVR may be limited. Choose the trade-off deliberately: if viewers need to rewind or revisit services, shorter sessions plus a local recording have the clearest support in YouTube’s guidance.

Clear music rights before going live
Do not assume that a church music licence alone prevents a YouTube interruption. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; if detected material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. The rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist even when the church has licensed the content. Claims can also be made against an archived live video after the broadcast. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its livestream terms and conditions.
- Check permissions for each song, arrangement, and sound recording you plan to use.
- Confirm that the relevant rights cover the intended territory, live transmission, and replay or archive use.
- If a rights owner or licensing provider says the channel is covered, ask whether the channel also needs to be allowlisted through Content ID to avoid live interruptions.
- Keep a record of the permissions and the person responsible for resolving a claim or interruption.
Which licences apply depends on the church’s jurisdiction and the specific content and uses involved. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that a particular church’s licence covers a particular broadcast; this is not legal advice.

OBS and YouTube settings cannot by themselves make a stream reliably unattended. Assign responsibility for watching the feed and responding when the picture, sound, computer, power, or connection fails. Set a check schedule appropriate to the service, and decide who can access the YouTube account and restart the encoder if needed.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Power: Decide what the operator should do after a power interruption. A UPS may help with some power events, but it does not protect against internet loss, hardware faults, or YouTube enforcement.
- Internet: Identify who will respond to a connection failure and whether a backup connection is available. A backup is useful only if the encoder can actually use it and the operator knows how to switch.
- Local recording: Assign someone to confirm that the recording is running and check the file after the session.
- Rights and platform notices: Make sure someone can see and respond to YouTube warnings, copyright matches, or stream termination.
The official OBS and YouTube guidance supports testing and monitoring, but it does not prescribe a staffing model or guarantee automatic restart, zero downtime, or continuous unattended operation.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not connect or YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect server details or stream key, or the broadcast has not been set up as expected in Live Control Room. | Check the selected YouTube service, server URL, and key against the current broadcast in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private; replace it if exposed. |
| OBS dropped frames increase; connection indicator turns yellow or red | The connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Check the upload connection and reduce bitrate or other encoding demands to a level it can sustain. Retest with representative movement and audio; use the OBS indicator guidance at OBS Help. |
| Viewers report missing, quiet, or distorted sound | Wrong source, muted input, unsuitable mixer feed, or a level problem between the sound system and OBS. | Check the intended OBS audio source and meters, then listen to the YouTube preview or test stream from a separate device. Confirm the mixer output and interface connections. |
| The stream stops or is interrupted during music | A third-party content match or rights-owner restriction may be involved. | Check YouTube’s alert or Live Control Room status, review the relevant permissions, and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. |
| No full YouTube replay appears after a long broadcast | A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; DVR may also be limited or unavailable. | Use shorter sessions for future broadcasts and keep a verified local recording. Do not treat a continuous feed as a guaranteed archive. |
