To loop one podcast recording in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source and enable Loop in the source properties. For multiple files, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. These controls repeat playback in OBS; you must still configure and start a YouTube encoder stream separately.
Choose the right OBS source
Use Media Source for a single local recording. OBS documents support for common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Choose VLC Video Source if you want a playlist or need VLC’s broader media support. VLC Video Source is available only when VLC is installed; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation explains both options.
- One file: Media Source is the straightforward choice.
- A playlist: VLC Video Source provides playlist looping.
- Source visibility matters: playback restart behavior is a separate choice from repeating a file or playlist.
Loop one podcast file with Media Source
- Open OBS and select the scene that should contain the podcast.
- In the Sources panel, select +, choose Media Source, and create a new source.
- In the source properties, select the local podcast file. Confirm the preview shows the intended video or that the audio source appears in the mixer.
- Enable Loop. This makes the selected file play again when it reaches the end.
- Choose whether to enable Restart playback when source becomes active. This restarts playback when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible; it does not control end-of-file repetition.
- Use Show nothing when playback ends only when you want a non-looping source to disappear at the end. With Loop enabled, playback should continue instead of reaching that end state.
- Switch away from the scene and back, if relevant to your layout, and confirm the source behaves as intended when it becomes visible.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC before opening the VLC Video Source properties. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene, choose + in the Sources panel, and add VLC Video Source.
- Add the podcast files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the last item.
- Play the playlist in OBS and verify that both picture and sound are present. Check visibility and playback timing if you expect it to start or resume when switching scenes.
OBS documents VLC Video Source as dependent on VLC libraries and describes Loop Playlist as the option for repeating the playlist. See the OBS documentation for details.
Connect OBS to YouTube and check the broadcast
Looping only controls local media playback. To put that scene on YouTube, set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio and configure OBS with the destination and stream key specified by YouTube. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screen recording or share it.

- Check channel eligibility: YouTube’s current guidance says encoder streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its general live-streaming page says streamers must be at least 16. Confirm the current rules and interface in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance before publishing.
- Use appropriate encoder settings: YouTube’s recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate and network capacity. Consult its current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported.
- Test before going public: send a test with representative audio and motion, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. See its streaming tips.
- Monitor while live: confirm sound and picture continue as expected. In OBS, inspect the source’s audio in the mixer; check the YouTube preview and stream health as well.
Troubleshoot common looping problems
The file plays once and stops
For Media Source, confirm Loop is enabled. For VLC Video Source, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Restart playback when source becomes active is not a substitute for either loop option.
Playback does not restart when you switch to the scene
For Media Source, check Restart playback when source becomes active and confirm the source is visible in the active scene. For VLC Video Source, check its visibility and playback behavior. A source being present in a scene is not necessarily the same as it becoming visible.

VLC Video Source is missing
Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC for this source.
The video appears but there is no sound
Check whether the source’s audio is showing activity in the OBS mixer and whether the intended scene is being sent to YouTube. Test the Live Control Room preview with headphones or other suitable monitoring before the public broadcast.

The YouTube preview or stream is unhealthy
Check the Live Control Room messages and verify the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Test again with representative motion and sound, and leave the recommended upload headroom.
