How to Host a 24/7 YouTube Stream on a Cloud VM in Mumbai

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a prerecorded video as a continuous YouTube Live stream, rent a cloud VM in a Mumbai region, install FFmpeg, and publish to YouTube over RTMPS. The basic chain is video file → FFmpeg on the VM → YouTube Live. This keeps your home computer out of the streaming path, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service: the VM, encoder process, source file, network connection, or YouTube ingest can fail.

Choose the right setup for your stream

A direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup is suited to one outbound feed, such as a looped prerecorded video. FFmpeg reads the file, encodes or copies it as configured, and sends it to YouTube Live. Choose this approach when you need a straightforward encoder on a server you control.

A managed live-transcoding service is a different option. It accepts an encoder input and can create channel outputs; consider it if you need managed transcoding, multiple renditions, or distribution beyond a single outbound feed. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API lists Mumbai as a supported location, but its location documentation applies to that managed service, not to the availability of every compute VM family in Mumbai. Confirm the exact VM SKU and networking availability in the provider console before deploying. Google Cloud Live Stream API locations

For a VM-based encoder, compare region and latency, compute availability, resilience and restart behavior, and total cost. There is no established universal VM size or like-for-like price for an unspecified provider, instance, stream duration, and bitrate. Benchmark the actual workload and estimate compute, egress, storage, and any managed-service charges.

Prepare YouTube Live and the VM

1. Confirm channel access and stream destination

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its RTMPS server URL and stream key. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so explicitly select or reveal the RTMPS option. RTMPS carries RTMP inside TLS and uses port 443 for ingestion. Use the actual destination and key shown for your stream; do not reuse a sample endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions and the RTMPS ingestion guide.

Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, shared shell history, and world-readable files. YouTube’s live stream resource associates a stream with ingestion settings and a stream key; consult the YouTube Live stream resource documentation for the relevant fields.

2. Create and secure a Mumbai VM

Select a cloud provider and a Mumbai-region VM only after checking that the required compute family, operating system image, and networking are offered there. Google Cloud names Mumbai as asia-south1 for its Live Stream API; that name should not be treated as proof that every VM type is available in that region. Restrict administrative access to the VM and allow the outbound connection needed to reach YouTube over RTMPS on port 443.

Configure a looped prerecorded stream

For a video file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its intended playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. AWS’s FFmpeg example demonstrates this loop-and-RTMPS pattern, but it is an example to adapt—not a YouTube-specific, guaranteed production command. AWS IVS FFmpeg streaming example

A command skeleton is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Replace the input path and destination with your actual values. The bitrate, GOP/keyframe values, codec options, and preset here are an illustrative starting point for a 30 fps H.264 stream, not a universal profile. Keep the key out of scripts readable by other users; for production, use a suitably protected configuration or secret-injection method, and verify that it cannot leak through process listings or logs. Test the exact command on the selected VM and with the actual source file.

Match settings to YouTube and the source

  • Protocol: use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. It is TLS-protected and ingests over port 443.
  • Codec and frame rate: YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Ensure the chosen encoder and source match your intended output.
  • Rate control and keyframes: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second interval corresponds to a 60-frame GOP; at 60 fps, it corresponds to 120 frames.
  • Bitrate: select a bitrate the VM’s outbound connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s current help page shows 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30; the same table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum. Check the live table for the exact codec and resolution before setting other profiles because table renderings can differ. YouTube encoder settings
  • Audio and picture: verify that the file has the expected audio tracks, aspect ratio, and frame rate. Test with representative motion and audio, not only a static opening frame.

Start with a controlled test

  1. Set the YouTube broadcast to private or unlisted for the initial test, as appropriate for your channel.
  2. Start FFmpeg with the real RTMPS destination and key, and wait for the stream to appear in Live Control Room.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health messages and watch the video and audio long enough to catch buffering, black frames, missing audio, or a file/encoder mismatch.
  4. Stop the test and correct any warnings before scheduling or making the broadcast public.

Make the VM process recoverable

A shell command running in an interactive session is not a 24/7 operations plan. Configure the process to start after reboot, restart after a crash, write useful logs, and alert someone when the source, encoder, upload, or YouTube stream health fails. A service manager such as systemd or a container supervisor can support those decisions, but exact unit settings depend on the chosen operating system and should be tested there. Protect the stream key in the service configuration and restrict access to logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan what happens when the VM reboots, the file becomes unreadable, FFmpeg exits, the network drops, or YouTube terminates the ingest connection. Test the restart path and confirm that a resumed encoder actually restores a healthy YouTube broadcast; automatic process restart alone does not prove that the live session recovered. For stronger resilience, evaluate redundant compute and network paths, while accounting for the added cost and operational complexity. No single-VM arrangement can promise uninterrupted uptime.

Understand Mumbai region and managed-service limits

Google Cloud advises choosing a streaming location with latency, cost, resilience, and co-location with other Google Cloud resources in mind. For its managed Live Stream API, an input or channel’s location cannot be changed after creation, so choose carefully. Those specifics concern the API; for a self-managed FFmpeg VM, verify the region’s compute and network offerings directly with the provider. Google Cloud location guidance

Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API has a 24-hour active-session limit, and a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in an active streaming state. This is a managed API limit, not an established limit on an FFmpeg process publishing directly from a VM. Do not apply it to the VM method. Google Cloud Live Stream API quotas and limits

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
No connection or authentication error Wrong RTMPS URL, stale key, or blocked outbound connection Copy the RTMPS URL and key again from Live Control Room, confirm port 443 egress, and check FFmpeg’s error output. Never paste the key into a public support post.
Stream connects but YouTube reports poor health Bitrate too high for the VM’s sustained upload path, encoder settings, or source issues Check YouTube’s stream health messages, reduce output bitrate if necessary, and retest at the actual resolution, frame rate, and audio settings.
Video plays too quickly or loops incorrectly Input pacing or loop configuration Confirm the command includes -re before the input and -stream_loop -1; verify that the input file decodes and inspect the FFmpeg log.
Black picture, wrong frame rate, or no audio Unsupported or unexpected file streams, mapping, or encode options Inspect the source with FFmpeg, explicitly configure the intended video and audio streams if needed, and repeat the private/unlisted test.
Stream stops after a VM or process interruption No restart policy, inaccessible source, or YouTube session not recovered Check service-manager logs, verify the source path and permissions, restart the encoder, then confirm the broadcast is healthy in Live Control Room.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos without maintaining a VM and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a hosted alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop from its cloud; nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. For a DIY VM, you control the encoder and region; StreamNeo removes VM setup and maintenance for this YouTube prerecorded-video use case. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
