For a countdown on an encoder-based live stream, add a countdown overlay through your encoder software. YouTube’s built-in countdown themes are for Premieres of uploaded videos, not scheduled encoder streams.
Before you schedule a live event
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming tips. For a continuous programmed visual with overlays, use an encoder workflow. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, confirming that the event opens on channel and watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality.
You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do. — YouTube Help, “YouTube live streaming tips”.
Schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- Start a scheduled event: Select Manage, then Schedule Stream. Choose Reuse settings if a previous event has suitable settings, or select Create new.
- Review the event details: Set the title, description, date and time, audience, and privacy. YouTube’s guidance says the default privacy is private for users aged 13–17 and public for users 18 or older; you can choose public, private, or unlisted.
- Save and promote the event: Share the scheduled watch-page URL. A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can select Notify me to get a reminder. See YouTube’s scheduled-stream guidance.
Scheduling creates an event page and gives viewers a way to find and remember that event. It does not start the encoder broadcast automatically.

Choose the right countdown for the format
| Route | What it counts down to | What YouTube documents | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encoder overlay | The start of content on the live encoder feed | YouTube confirms that encoder streams support overlays, but the steps for creating a timer depend on the encoder software. | You want a countdown as part of a live encoder feed. Follow your encoder’s current instructions and test the source before going public. |
| YouTube Premiere | The start of a scheduled uploaded video | During Premiere setup, YouTube lets you choose a countdown theme and length. The countdown is not included in the video afterward. | You are scheduling an uploaded video as an event, not adding a countdown to an encoder livestream. |
Add a countdown to an encoder feed
Use a countdown graphic or timer source in your encoder software, then check how it appears in the Live Control Room preview. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports overlays generally; it does not specify how to configure a countdown in a particular encoder. Check that software’s current help for the exact source setup. Test in a private or unlisted event before using the countdown on a public broadcast.
Use a Premiere countdown for an uploaded video
If the content is an uploaded video rather than a live encoder feed, schedule it as a Premiere and choose a countdown theme and length during setup. The Premiere has a public watch page where viewers can set a reminder; the countdown runs before the video and is not part of the archived video. YouTube’s Premiere instructions state that scheduled-stream trailers have separate eligibility: more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes, with a permitted duration of 15 seconds to 3 minutes. These trailer limits are not the same as the Premiere countdown controls.

Connect the encoder and start the scheduled broadcast
- At the scheduled time, open the event in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder.
- Start sending the feed from the encoder.
- Wait until the feed appears in the Live Control Room preview and check picture and sound.
- Select Go Live in Live Control Room to begin the broadcast.
- When the event is over, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder as directed in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This archive guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 availability and does not establish that longer streams will be archived.
Make the recurring schedule easy to find
A recurring channel schedule is a communication practice built from individual scheduled events. Pick a cadence the channel can maintain, create the events viewers need, and communicate changes. YouTube suggests displaying an upload schedule in the channel banner; a banner communicates the regular cadence, while each scheduled event’s watch page gives viewers a link and reminder option. See YouTube’s channel guidance.

- The channel cannot schedule or start a live stream: Check verification status and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days.
- The scheduled page exists, but viewers see no live video: Scheduling does not start the broadcast. Confirm that the encoder is sending the event’s stream URL and key, then wait for its preview and select Go Live.
- The countdown is missing from an encoder stream: Check the encoder’s source or overlay configuration and confirm the timer appears in the Live Control Room preview. YouTube Studio does not document a built-in countdown switch for scheduled encoder streams.
- Viewers cannot find a recurring timetable: Share the event-specific watch page and put the regular cadence in the channel banner; neither replaces the other.
- An event ends or archives differently than expected: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on it as a guarantee of continuous operation or archiving a longer broadcast.
