For a meditation stream, a practical starting point is open chat with held-message review and human moderator coverage; tighten access or add slow mode if actual spam makes that necessary. A stream running around the clock does not mean its chat is being watched around the clock.
Set channel-level moderation defaults in YouTube Studio
These controls apply across your channel’s live chats. In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls.
Choose a held-message review level
Under live-chat messages, select None, Basic, or Strict for potentially inappropriate messages. Basic and Strict can hold messages that YouTube’s systems identify for you or a managing moderator to show or hide. Held messages are not published automatically: if nobody acts on them, they remain hidden.
The options trade off how much potentially inappropriate material may be held against how much review your team can provide. YouTube does not publish a universal recommended setting for meditation streams or quantified false-positive rates. Start with a level your moderators can manage, then adjust it based on the chat you actually see.

Add blocked words
In the same settings area, add recurring spam phrases, scam terms, or other words that do not belong in your chat. YouTube blocks messages that contain or closely match listed words. Review the list periodically as spam patterns change; a word filter cannot replace human review.
Choose who can participate
Use the participation setting that fits your community rather than treating tighter access as automatically better. Open chat is easiest for newcomers; restrictions add friction that may deter spam but also limit access.

Subscriber-only and members-only chat cannot run at the same time. YouTube’s documentation defines these controls but does not establish which one is best for a meditation audience.
How do I slow down YouTube live chat?
In the stream’s Live Control Room, edit the stream, open customization, and set a delay under Message delay. Slow mode limits how often an individual user can post. It can run alongside subscriber-only chat, so you can use both when your channel needs an access gate and a lower posting rate.

Slow mode does not apply to the channel owner, moderators, or channel members. If chat is still difficult to manage, reduce participation or add human coverage rather than assuming the delay controls every account equally.
Assign moderators and plan coverage
Choose each moderator role according to the permissions needed. Standard moderators can clean up messages, time out or hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have broader in-chat controls, including participant mode, blocked words, and toggling chat, but they do not get access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.

- Give moderation duties only to trusted people, and clarify who can hide users or change chat access.
- Set coverage windows and handoffs if you expect chat to be reviewed continuously. YouTube’s tools do not provide a built-in 24/7 staffing service or guarantee unattended moderation.
- Check held messages and actual chat behavior while the stream is operating. YouTube says held messages can be shown at their original time or kept hidden, and automated review may miss material.
YouTube cautions, “No system is perfect.” Moderation settings can help, but they do not ensure every unsuitable message will be caught.

Live-chat replay is on by default for stream archives, according to YouTube. You can turn it off for an individual archive. Decide whether your moderation policy and community expectations should also apply to the replayed chat, and disable replay on an archive when that is not appropriate.

Keep YouTube rules in view
Moderation controls do not exempt a stream or its chat from YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube may disable live chat if the stream or chat violates those guidelines. Review messages and channel policies in context; filters and participation gates are not permission to overlook platform rules.
