For one YouTube stream, start with the encoder bitrate and leave 20% upload headroom: a 10 Mbps stream needs about 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity, while a 14 Mbps stream needs about 17.5 Mbps. The right figure depends on resolution, frame rate and codec—not just the word “1080p.” In India, check your plan’s typical upload speed and test the connection where the stream will run; an advertised download speed does not tell you whether the upload is sufficient.
Upload speed targets by resolution, frame rate and codec
YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within the available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. As a planning calculation, divide the stream bitrate by 0.8, or multiply it by 1.25. The upload targets below apply that calculation to YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates; they are arithmetic estimates, not separate YouTube requirements.
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | Approximate upload target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | AV1/H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 720p30 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | AV1/H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 720p60 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1/H.265 | 10 Mbps | 12.5 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | AV1/H.265 | 12 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | AV1/H.265 | 15 Mbps | 18.75 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | H.264 | 21 Mbps | 26.25 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | AV1/H.265 | 24 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | H.264 | 34 Mbps | 42.5 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p30 | AV1/H.265 | 30 Mbps | 37.5 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p30 | H.264 | 42 Mbps | 52.5 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p60 | AV1/H.265 | 35 Mbps | 43.75 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p60 | H.264 | 50 Mbps | 62.5 Mbps |
These recommendations are from YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance. The target assumes that capacity is available to the stream. Leave additional room for other household use, uploads or concurrent streams.
What an India broadband plan needs to provide
Look for the typical upload speed for the exact plan and service area. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload or download speed; providers must show typical speeds in their tariff offerings. TRAI also points consumers to its MySpeed app or portal to measure connection speed. See TRAI’s broadband information.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not infer upload capacity from an advertised download tier. Provider examples illustrate why the plan details matter: Airtel’s broadband page lists plan speeds and notes that some plans are available only in select geographies, but the cited page does not establish upload speed for every tier. A Jio plan comparison example states 30 Mbps upload and 30 Mbps download. Neither example is a nationwide comparison or a guarantee of sustained speed at your address. Check current local terms directly: Airtel broadband plans and Jio Fiber plan comparison.
How to check whether your connection can sustain the stream
- Choose the output first. Set the resolution, frame rate and codec, then select a bitrate using YouTube’s recommended values above.
- Calculate the upload target. Allow at least 20% above the total bitrate sent to YouTube. For example, 1080p30 H.264 at 14 Mbps calls for about 17.5 Mbps of available upload capacity.
- Check the plan’s typical upload speed. Confirm the figure for your address and service area rather than relying on the plan’s download headline.
- Measure at the streaming location. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. Measure where the encoder will run and repeat at different times if the connection varies. A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee for a continuous broadcast.
- Use Ethernet for a computer setup where practical. YouTube recommends a wired connection. Ethernet can improve the local link between your computer and router, but it does not increase the capacity supplied by your ISP.
- Test with real content and monitor stream health. Include representative audio and video movement, account for other network use, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the connection cannot sustain the target, lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.

What changes when the stream runs 24/7?
YouTube’s cited guidance does not give a separate universal speed multiplier for a 24/7 broadcast. The same bitrate-and-headroom calculation applies, but keeping a stream live continuously makes sustained connection quality, competing household traffic, power continuity and monitoring important operational concerns. A brief successful speed test cannot establish that the connection will stay stable all day.
If you send simultaneous streams to multiple destinations, add their target bitrates. YouTube’s guidance for streaming across platforms says to aim for upload speed 1.5–2 times the combined bitrate, especially on shared connections. That guidance is for multiple concurrent streams; it is not the rule for a single YouTube stream. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.
