For a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, a cloud playout service is usually the more direct fit; for a stream assembled from cameras, microphones, screen capture, or other live sources, OBS gives you more hands-on production control. Castr documents an uploaded-video workflow that can schedule or loop a recording without a local encoder. OBS runs on your computer, so that computer and its internet connection remain part of the stream. StreamNeo is another cloud option for uploaded videos, with a flat price per slot across supported quality levels and a free first day.
How Castr and OBS differ
Castr: cloud playout for uploaded videos
Castr lets you upload a finished video and broadcast it as a live stream to YouTube and other destinations. Its pre-recorded workflow supports scheduling and continuous looping without a local encoder or live source, according to Castr’s product page. Its feature page describes cloud scheduling, loop mode, and schedule changes; 24/7 scheduling and loop mode are listed for all plans.
In Castr’s scheduling guide, Infinite Loop starts immediately and repeats, while Schedule Date Time starts at a selected time. This is different from sending Castr a live source: Castr says that live streams can run for an unlimited duration while the subscription is active and has enough streaming bandwidth. That is a vendor statement, not an independent uptime guarantee (Castr Help Center).
OBS: local production and encoding
OBS Studio is software for composing and encoding a stream on your computer. Its official overview covers selecting a streaming service or custom server, entering a stream key, configuring video and audio bitrates, output resolution and frame rate, and enabling automatic reconnect in advanced settings. That makes OBS a better fit when you need to mix local sources or manage a scene-based production. The computer running OBS and its network must stay available for the stream to continue.

OBS warns that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee adequate streaming or recording performance: workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements). There is no universal minimum computer specification established by those factors alone.

These are workflow distinctions, not a measured reliability ranking. OBS offers automatic reconnect, and YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; neither proves that a particular setup will never fail.

What Castr costs, and what the figures mean
Castr’s pricing page, checked on October 3, 2026, lists these USD plan examples. Prices and limits can change, so verify the live page before subscribing (Castr pricing).

The page also says plans are month-to-month, annual billing is optional, and a seven-day trial is offered. Annual billing displays a different upfront bandwidth pool and stream allocations, so check the plan details for the billing option you intend to use. Castr advertises a “99.9% uptime SLA” on its pricing page; this is Castr’s claim, not independently measured uptime.

OBS’s cited official overview describes the software workflow but does not state a comparable subscription price. The practical cost of an OBS setup depends on the computer and connectivity you already have or need to provide; no particular mini PC or minimum hardware budget is established here.
Set up a continuous YouTube stream
First decide whether your source is uploaded video or a live production. For an uploaded-video loop, use a cloud pre-recorded workflow such as Castr or StreamNeo. For a live, scene-based production, OBS is the relevant method below.

OBS setup for a live source
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance.
- Get the stream connection details. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key as described in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. In OBS, choose the relevant service or configure a custom server, then enter the URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Build and test your scene. Add the camera, microphone, display capture, or other sources you need. Configure video and audio bitrate, output resolution, and frame rate in OBS. The correct values depend on your output and system; the cited guidance does not establish one setting that suits every stream.
- Allow network headroom. YouTube recommends that the total streaming bitrate not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee; check the current streaming tips.
- Check the preview before going public. Test the stream, confirm it is accessible, and check audio and video in YouTube’s preview. YouTube recommends testing and continuous monitoring of stream quality.
- Enable recovery, then monitor. OBS’s overview documents automatic reconnect in advanced settings. It can help recover from a dropped connection, but it does not remove the need to keep the computer and network operating or to monitor the stream.
For uploaded video: use a cloud loop or schedule
Castr’s documented route is to upload a finished video and choose Infinite Loop for an immediate continuous repeat, or Schedule Date Time to start at a chosen time. Its pre-recorded feature can also arrange scheduled programming. Confirm that the selected plan’s bandwidth, storage, concurrent-stream, and destination limits suit your intended setup.

Eligibility, copyright, and content rights
YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules apply whether you use OBS or a cloud service: verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer aged 16 or older. You also need the rights or permissions required for the video, music, and other material you broadcast. A continuous loop does not make copyrighted material safe to use. Review YouTube’s policies and only stream content you are entitled to use; the available setup guidance does not establish that reused content is automatically permitted or monetizable.

Longer than 12 hours? Plan for the archive separately
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a stream longer than 12 hours. For a continuous channel, arrange a separate recording or archive workflow and confirm current behavior in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Reliability means checking the whole chain
A continuous stream depends on the source or uploaded file, the encoder or cloud service, connectivity, and YouTube’s receiving end. YouTube recommends reliable connectivity, bandwidth headroom, testing, checking preview access, and continuous monitoring. OBS’s reconnect option and Castr’s advertised uptime SLA are not proof of uninterrupted service in every setup.
