Use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 to repeat an ASMR video indefinitely and -re to read it at its native frame rate for live output. Put both options before the input file’s -i. Then match the codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your upload capacity.
The command below is an adaptable starting point, not a tested guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. YouTube recommends testing representative content and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
Starting FFmpeg command for a looping YouTube Live stream
This example targets a 1080p, 30 fps, H.264 SDR stream. YouTube’s current recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps. Replace the file path and RTMPS destination with your own values.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/asmr.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_NAME"
-repaces file reading at its native frame rate; FFmpeg describes it as equivalent to-readrate 1and useful when output packet timing matters, such as live streaming.-stream_loop -1requests infinite repetition of the input.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which is two seconds at 30 fps. The two-second interval follows YouTube’s recommendation.-keyint_minand-sc_thresholdare illustrative libx264 controls for regular GOP spacing, not YouTube requirements. Checkffmpeg -h encoder=libx264for your installed build if an option is rejected or behaves differently.- The example uses AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, matching YouTube’s listed stereo settings.
This is a constructed example, not a source-published FFmpeg preset or a command tested in a particular environment. Verify the output format and assigned RTMPS details against your FFmpeg build and YouTube event. Never put a real stream key in public logs, an article or a screenshot.

Choose bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval
YouTube’s encoder settings, checked October 3, 2026, list the following recommended video bitrates. The values are YouTube configuration guidance, not measurements of ASMR viewing or a guarantee of picture quality. Choose a row that matches your intended resolution and frame rate.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
For H.264, YouTube also lists minimum bitrates separately. For example, 1080p30 has a 5 Mbps minimum and a 14 Mbps recommendation; 720p30 has a 3 Mbps minimum and an 8 Mbps recommendation. Prefer the recommended figure if your upload can sustain it, with headroom for bitrate variation and other network traffic. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for your connection and testing upload bitrate.

Translate YouTube’s keyframe interval into GOP frames
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. For a constant frame rate, multiply frames per second by two to get a two-second GOP: 30 fps × 2 = 60 frames, and 60 fps × 2 = 120 frames. The example’s -g 60 therefore corresponds to two seconds at 30 fps. Check how your chosen encoder interprets GOP options; codec-specific behavior can differ.
Other encoder settings to account for
- YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data through Google’s servers.
- Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The example uses H.264.
- YouTube recommends CBR. The example sets
-b:vand-maxrateto the same value; actual encoder behavior depends on the selected build and options. - For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Confirm the source and output are appropriate for your intended format.
- YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It lists 5.1 surround only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS, at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
Set up the loop and check its boundaries
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 repeats indefinitely. -re is also an input option and reads at native frame rate. Put each before the relevant -i, as in the example. Without real-time pacing, reading a file for a live destination may not produce the intended live timing.

Looping repeats the media; it does not repair an awkward edit. Listen to and watch the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning. If the sound or picture jumps noticeably, edit the source into a more seamless loop rather than expecting FFmpeg to hide the discontinuity.
The example assumes the MP4 contains both the desired picture and audio. If you use separate audio and video files, their durations and loop behavior must be coordinated. Looping one input does not automatically loop a separate input.

Connect FFmpeg to the YouTube event
- Get the event’s ingestion details. In YouTube Live Control Room or through the Live Streaming API, obtain the assigned ingestion address and stream name/key. The API documents a primary ingestion address and stream name; backup ingestion addresses are optional parallel destinations.
- Keep the stream key private. Use the event’s assigned stream name/key in the destination format supported by your encoder. YouTube’s API documentation allows the ingestion address and stream name to be entered separately or combined according to the encoder interface.
- Use RTMPS where available. Enter the assigned RTMPS destination rather than copying the example placeholder literally. Confirm the destination form expected by your FFmpeg build.
- Match the event settings. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval together. YouTube detects settings automatically by default; if you manually specify resolution, use the custom stream-key settings described by YouTube.
- Start with a preflight test. Use audio and motion representative of the planned stream. Check aspect ratio, audio presence and level, dropped or frozen frames, the loop transition and YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
- Monitor the event. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while it is live; a repeating source file does not itself ensure that the event or FFmpeg process will run without interruption.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream ends when the file ends: check that
-stream_loop -1is present before the input’s-i. It is an input option. - Playback races through the file or timing is wrong: place
-rebefore the relevant-iso the file is read at native frame rate. - YouTube reports bitrate or stream-health problems: verify resolution, frame rate and codec against the corresponding recommendation; test upload capacity and leave headroom for other traffic.
- Keyframes are too far apart: calculate a two-second GOP from the frame rate (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps) and check the selected encoder’s GOP behavior. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- FFmpeg rejects a libx264 option: inspect
ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264for the installed build. The example’s-keyint_minand-sc_thresholdare optional illustrative controls, not YouTube requirements. - Picture or sound jumps at every repeat: review the file’s end-to-start edit and improve the source transition if necessary.
- Audio is absent, too quiet or out of sync: confirm the intended audio is in the selected input, then check presence and level in the test stream. If using separate inputs, coordinate their duration and loop behavior.
- The stream disconnects: consult YouTube’s stream-health messages and inspect the local process and connection. The loop option does not establish automatic reconnection or process supervision.
What looping does not guarantee
An indefinitely repeated input is not the same as an indefinitely available live event. The cited FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not establish automatic reconnect, process supervision, server uptime or an event-duration policy. Validate those separately for your setup before relying on continuous operation.
Also make sure you have the rights to every video and audio element in the loop. Repeating a file does not make copyrighted material yours or establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Check YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies for your content; the encoder settings alone cannot resolve those questions.
