To run a black-screen sleep music stream on YouTube, enable live streaming for your channel, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send a black video scene with music you have the rights to use, and test the feed before you start. For an overnight broadcast, check audio and connection health, and do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive if the stream may run longer than 12 hours.
Before you start: enable YouTube Live and check music rights
Enable live streaming early
Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Confirm you can use the music
You need rights for the music in both the live broadcast and the intended replay. YouTube’s Livestream terms say creators represent that they have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other rights participants. Use original music or a license that clearly covers the YouTube live use and archive. A file being downloadable, described as “royalty-free,” or already in your possession does not by itself establish that your use is permitted; check license scope and attribution requirements.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into your streaming software’s server and key fields. YouTube describes the key as the credential/address the encoder uses to send the feed.
- Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Follow YouTube’s encoder-stream setup for the current Studio workflow and labels.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a black-screen scene and loop the music
- In your encoder, create a scene with a black image or a black video source as the visual. Make sure it fills the output canvas so no desktop, cursor, or other scene element appears.
- Add the sleep-music file as an audio source, or use another audio input you are permitted to broadcast.
- If the audio is shorter than the planned stream, enable repeat or loop for that source in the encoder. The location of this control varies by software; check that the end of the track returns cleanly to the beginning without a long silence or unwanted sound.
- Set the audio level so it is audible but not clipping. Listen to the encoder output and YouTube preview, not just the local file.
The specific repeat control depends on the encoder you use; YouTube’s setup guidance does not prescribe software-specific loop steps. A streaming computer is optional if you already have a capable computer, and YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not necessary for basic computer-based streaming.
Choose encoder settings for a steady stream
YouTube’s baseline guidance supports H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds (do not exceed four seconds). Its current settings table lists 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. YouTube does not publish a special preset for a static black-screen sleep stream, so treat this as a baseline rather than a guarantee for every encoder or connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Video: H.264 with CBR. A static scene can be visually simple, but use a supported output configuration and test it in the actual encoder.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where the encoder exposes the setting; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Choose AAC or MP3 and verify the music plays continuously in the outgoing mix.
- Resolution and bitrate: For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube lists 2 Mbps video bitrate. Select settings your upload connection can sustain.
Test, go live, and monitor overnight
- Allow time to configure and test. YouTube’s encoder tips recommend configuring at least two hours before a scheduled stream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. For example, a 2 Mbps video stream needs more than 2 Mbps available because audio and other network traffic also consume capacity.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture is black, the audio is present and clean, and stream health is acceptable before starting the event.
- Start the event in Live Control Room unless you have enabled the stream’s auto-start setting. During the broadcast, check that audio has not stopped, the visual remains as intended, and the connection is healthy.
- To finish, stop the feed in the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s testing and bandwidth recommendations are in its streaming tips. A local test before launch helps catch a muted source, an incorrect scene, or an unstable upload before viewers encounter it.
Plan the replay for long broadcasts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your sleep stream may exceed 12 hours and keeping a replay matters, make a local recording or divide the broadcast into shorter streams. YouTube does not promise automatic archiving for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common black-screen stream problems
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room, and that live streaming is enabled for the channel. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- The preview is not black: Confirm the black source is in the active scene, covers the full canvas, and sits above any desktop capture or other visual source.
- There is no music or it stops: Check that the correct audio source is enabled and included in the outgoing mix. Verify repeat/loop is enabled and test across the track boundary.
- The stream buffers or loses health: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a sustainable setting, check for competing upload traffic, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate.
- The replay is missing after a very long stream: Automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours; for longer broadcasts, use a local recording or split the stream.
- You receive a copyright claim or restriction: Review the actual license for the music and whether it covers live use and the archive. Possessing the file or seeing it labeled royalty-free does not establish those permissions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not broadcast from a camera and streams to YouTube only.
