Build a 24/7 Indian music stream by connecting three things: a catalog you have permission to broadcast, software that rotates tracks and has a fallback source, and a delivery service such as Icecast, Shoutcast, or YouTube Live. Clear the rights for the exact recordings, compositions, territories, and platform before you stream. A playlist tool can keep songs changing, but it cannot grant permission to rebroadcast them.
How the system fits together
A continuously rotating station is not just a playlist on repeat. It is a small broadcast chain with three separate jobs:
- Music library and playlist: store rights-cleared audio and choose whether tracks play in order, shuffle, or follow another programmed sequence.
- Automation and delivery: use an automation tool such as Liquidsoap to play the list, handle a missing source, and send audio to an Icecast or Shoutcast server. A website or compatible player then presents that server’s stream URL to listeners.
- Permissions: confirm that the rights for both the recording and the underlying musical and literary works cover continuous online streaming on the platform and in the territories you intend to serve.
For audio-only web radio, the conceptual path is cleared audio files or playlist → Liquidsoap rotation and fallback → Icecast or Shoutcast → website or compatible player. If you need a video-platform destination instead, the path and platform rules change; an audio playlist by itself is not a complete YouTube live video feed.
Clear the Indian music before building the playlist
Identify rights in both the recording and the song
A song file can involve separate rights in the sound recording and in the underlying musical composition and lyrics. The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) describes its role in relation to musical and literary works in the repertoire it represents, while sound-recording rights may belong to or be administered by different owners. An IPRS licence should not be treated as clearance for recordings it does not own or administer, and no single organization should be assumed to clear every item in a catalog.

For each track, keep a rights record with the recording owner or administrator, composition and lyric rights, the licence or written permission, covered territories and term, permitted platform and use, attribution requirements, and any reporting or Content ID instructions. A purchase, a personal music subscription, or permission to listen does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast a track to the public.
Ask for permission that matches the actual broadcast
Ask the relevant rights holders or administrators to confirm in writing that the grant covers continuous online streaming, your intended destination (for example, your own website or YouTube), the territories, monetization, and any archived or replay copies. Also ask about metadata, reporting, and whether the channel must be allowlisted. IPRS lists different streaming licence categories; which, if any, applies depends on the repertoire and use.

PPL India’s FAQ describes its radio broadcast licence in relation to terrestrial stations. Its general business licensing information and its catalogue should be treated as starting points for a written scope check, not proof that an independent online stream or YouTube broadcast is covered. Confirm the online use with the relevant rights holders or administrators rather than assuming a terrestrial radio authorization extends to the internet.
Account for platform enforcement
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube also notes that licensed content can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted by the relevant rights owner. An allowlist is a platform-side handling step for licensed content, not a substitute for obtaining the licence itself.

Choose a rotation that suits the station
Decide between a predictable cycle and a shuffle
Liquidsoap supports playlist sources, ordered playback, shuffled playback, playlist reload settings, and output to Icecast or Shoutcast. Its cookbook documents a shuffled playlist that reloads a remote list every ten minutes, which can let an operator update the list while the process is running. Check the syntax against the Liquidsoap version you install: examples span different documentation versions, including 2.3.3.
- Ordered and looping: use this when you want a known sequence and a predictable point at which the cycle repeats.
- Shuffled: use this when you want variety in the order. Depending on configuration and list size, tracks may recur before listeners have heard every item.
- Reloadable list: use a playlist source that can be updated while the station runs if you need to add or remove tracks without rebuilding the whole chain. Test the reload behavior with your installed version.
Keep the playlist itself tidy: use filenames and metadata that are easy to identify, remove entries for files that are no longer available, and test the list from the same location and permissions the streaming process will use. Do not put a track in the live list until its rights record covers the intended stream.

Build a fallback into the chain
A primary playlist can become unavailable or contain an invalid entry. Liquidsoap’s quickstart demonstrates a safe fallback source. Configure a known-good fallback item or alternate playlist so the output has something to play if the main source fails; then test the failure case deliberately. A fallback reduces one avoidable interruption, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Set up delivery and continuity
For an audio-only web station
- Prepare the server: choose an Icecast or Shoutcast destination and create the mount or stream endpoint required by that server. The Liquidsoap output must be configured for the destination you actually use.
- Connect the automation: point Liquidsoap at the cleared playlist, select ordered or shuffled playback, define the reload behavior if needed, and connect the fallback source.
- Publish the listener URL: test the stream URL in a compatible player and embed or link that player on your site. Confirm that playback works from outside the machine hosting the automation.
- Keep a recovery path: retain backups of the playlist and configuration, review logs, monitor whether the process and server are reachable, and set up connection alerts and process supervision. Document and test a restart procedure.
Those monitoring and recovery practices are operational recommendations, not an uptime guarantee from Liquidsoap. The cited documentation establishes playlist, fallback, and output capabilities; it does not prescribe a universal server size, listener capacity, bitrate, or encoding setting. Size the host and network for the number of simultaneous listeners and the format you choose, and validate the result under your expected load.

If the destination is a video platform
A video platform needs a live video feed as well as audio. Liquidsoap’s current site describes receiving a live video feed such as RTMP from OBS and pushing output to YouTube Live. That demonstrates a possible technical route; it does not establish music rights, guarantee that YouTube will accept a stream, or remove the need to plan for channel and platform dependencies. Follow the destination’s current ingest requirements for encoder settings rather than treating one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval as universal.
Before going live, confirm that your permission covers the platform and any replay or archive behavior, and coordinate any required allowlisting with the rights owner. Decide how you will notice a dropped connection or platform interruption and who will restart or investigate it.

| Approach | Useful when | What you must operate or verify |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted audio server with Liquidsoap | You want an audio-only stream URL for a site or compatible player and need control over playlist behavior. | Playlist and fallback configuration, server and network capacity, monitoring, recovery, and rights for the stream. |
| Video-platform live stream | You specifically need a video destination such as YouTube Live, potentially with a visual layer. | A video feed and encoder path, platform account and ingest requirements, rights for that platform, and a response plan for enforcement or interruption. |
| Managed cloud loop of uploaded video | You have a pre-recorded video containing the music and want it to keep running as a YouTube live stream without leaving a home computer on. | Confirm that the service’s workflow fits a video-based YouTube stream, and independently clear all music rights for that use. |
There is no universally best host or encoding setting established for every station. Make the choice using your expected simultaneous listeners, whether the destination needs video, encoding workload, operational skills, audience discovery needs, bandwidth, budget, monetization rules, territory coverage, archive behavior, and rights-holder requirements. Confirm actual capacity and service costs for your proposed setup before committing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream built from pre-recorded video, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it is not a camera broadcast or an audio-only Icecast service, and it streams to YouTube only. Use it only when your music permissions cover the recordings, compositions, territory, and YouTube use in question.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality you upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and team support; the same product is included on every plan, with billing length as the difference.
Quick Recap
- Upload a rights-cleared video or build a playlist.

Troubleshooting common failures
- The stream is silent or the player will not connect: check the server output and mount or endpoint settings, confirm the server is reachable, and test the public listener URL from a different connection.
- The playlist stops when a file is missing or invalid: inspect the playlist path, file permissions, and logs; remove or repair the bad entry, then test that the configured fallback takes over.
- New tracks do not appear: check that the process is reading the playlist you edited and that its reload setting is active. Verify syntax for your installed Liquidsoap version, then test a reload without assuming that every playlist source refreshes in the same way.
- Tracks repeat more often than expected: review whether the source is shuffled or ordered, how many cleared tracks are available, and the source’s repeat behavior. Use an ordered cycle if a predictable sequence matters.
- The server or process drops: review logs and connection alerts, check host and network availability, and follow the tested restart procedure. A supervisor and backup configuration help with recovery but do not make a deployment failure-proof.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the live stream: check the platform’s notice and identify the matched content. Confirm that you have permission for the exact use and ask the rights owner about any required channel allowlisting; do not treat allowlisting alone as licensing.
