If your FFmpeg gaming stream keeps reconnecting on YouTube Live, first find out which connection is dropping: the feed going into FFmpeg, or FFmpeg’s output to YouTube. The fix depends on that distinction. FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options apply to HTTP inputs; they are not a universal repair for a failed RTMP/RTMPS output. For output recovery, FFmpeg documents controls in its FIFO pseudo-muxer, but those controls make recovery attempts rather than guarantee seamless continuation.
Identify which connection is failing
A relay can have two separate connections: an input feed (such as a game capture or another live source) and an output from FFmpeg to YouTube. Read the command and the log lines immediately before and after a reconnect. Determine whether the input stopped producing data, or the output connection to YouTube failed. Check the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages at the same time; the logs and YouTube’s status may help distinguish a local input problem from an ingest or network problem. Without the command, logs, and stream-health messages, there is no way to identify the cause of a particular interruption.
- If errors name an HTTP URL used as an input, investigate HTTP input recovery options.
- If errors concern the RTMP/RTMPS destination or output, investigate output recovery and the network path instead.
- If FFmpeg reports no interruption but YouTube reports poor stream health, check the encoder settings and available upload capacity.
If an HTTP input is disconnecting
FFmpeg documents HTTP protocol options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed. Depending on the option, they can retry before EOF, treat EOF as an error, retry certain connection errors, respond to selected HTTP status codes, or permit retries for streamed inputs. Their scope is HTTP; they do not establish that those options will reconnect an RTMP/RTMPS output to YouTube. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the options and their exact meanings.
Use only the options relevant to the failing HTTP input and consult the documentation for the FFmpeg build you run. A retry policy cannot restore a source that has ended permanently or resolve an unrelated failure in the YouTube output connection.

If FFmpeg’s output to YouTube is disconnecting
For output recovery, FFmpeg documents a FIFO pseudo-muxer with controls including attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, recover_any_error, and max_recovery_attempts. The FIFO layer can be placed around an output format such as FLV to make recovery attempts when an output error occurs. The settings control whether and how FFmpeg attempts recovery; they do not promise that every RTMP/RTMPS interruption will resume transparently, preserve every packet, or continue the same YouTube live session.
Review the FFmpeg formats documentation for the FIFO muxer options and syntax supported by your version. Confirm that the muxer is applied to the output path, not mistaken for an HTTP input setting. After changing the command, inspect the new logs and YouTube stream health; do not assume that a recovery attempt succeeded just because the FFmpeg process remains running.

Check YouTube ingest and encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for streaming to YouTube Live. Its encoder guidance lists CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Listed video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose settings supported by your encoder and check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
For H.264, YouTube Help lists these recommended bitrates: 6 Mbps for 720p60, 8 Mbps for 720p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are YouTube recommendations for the specified codec, resolution, and frame rate—not guaranteed minimums, universal values for other codecs, or proof that a particular stream’s reconnections are caused by bitrate.

Before going live, YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health during the event. A static screen test may not reveal problems that appear during fast gameplay or active audio.
Check upload capacity and the network path
- Run an upload speed test on the connection used by the streaming computer.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the connection can reliably support, leaving capacity for normal network variation and other household or office traffic.
- Compare the time of each FFmpeg interruption with YouTube’s stream-health messages and any broader network drop. If the encoder is using Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet connection is an optional stability measure to try; it is not a guaranteed fix for FFmpeg or YouTube reconnect behavior.
- Test again with representative gameplay and audio, and monitor the Live Control Room rather than relying on the encoder log alone.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| An HTTP input error appears before the interruption | The source URL and the HTTP error or EOF reported in FFmpeg’s log | Review the HTTP reconnect options applicable to that input in the FFmpeg protocol documentation. Do not apply them as if they were RTMP output recovery settings. |
| The RTMP/RTMPS output fails but the input continues | The output error, FIFO configuration, and YouTube stream-health messages | Evaluate the FIFO recovery controls documented by FFmpeg. Treat them as recovery attempts, not a guarantee of uninterrupted output. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or an unstable stream | Bitrate relative to upload capacity, selected encoder settings, and network conditions | Test upload speed, select a quality the connection can sustain, and run a representative test stream. |
| The stream drops again after a recovery attempt | Whether the original cause remains, whether the input also failed, and whether YouTube reports a new ingest issue | Use the timestamps in FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s health messages to isolate the failing leg; recovery settings cannot correct every underlying cause. |
What to save before asking for help
- The full FFmpeg command, with stream keys and other credentials removed before sharing.
- The FFmpeg version and build information.
- A log excerpt covering the interruption and the recovery attempt.
- The matching YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages and their timestamps.
- Your intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether the encoder uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded gaming video looping on a YouTube channel, rather than to broadcast live gameplay from a camera or game capture, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera capture.
