You can relay an Indian online radio station to YouTube with FFmpeg by reading an authorized direct audio stream, pairing it with a visual such as approved station artwork, and sending the resulting audio/video stream to the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. A station’s publicly playable URL is not permission to retransmit its programs: confirm the necessary music and recording rights, territories, duration, archiving, and monetization permissions before you start.
Before you start: confirm permission and access
- Get authorization. Ask the station and relevant rights holders for permission to retransmit its programming on YouTube. Confirm the permission covers the intended territories, broadcast duration, any YouTube archive, and monetization, if applicable. Public playback or the station’s location in India does not establish those rights.
- Check YouTube Live eligibility. Live streaming must be enabled for your channel and the channel must meet YouTube’s requirements. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Find the actual audio endpoint. A station webpage or player URL may not be a directly readable stream. Identify the station-approved media URL, then confirm that your installed FFmpeg can open it and determine the audio format.
- Prepare an authorized visual. This example uses a still image. Make sure you have permission to use the image on the live stream and any resulting archive.
- Install a compatible FFmpeg build. The command below uses
libx264; if your build does not include it, use a compatible video encoder available in that build. Check your local FFmpeg help for support and option availability.
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to hold the rights required for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights, and address applicable territory-specific requirements and archived content. YouTube’s terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions. This is a practical permissions check, not individualized legal advice; the information here cannot determine whether any particular station’s programming is cleared under Indian or another territory’s laws.
Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow the encoder setup flow in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream. Use those actual values; do not guess an ingest endpoint or reuse example credentials.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream. Store it somewhere that will not be exposed in screenshots, shared scripts, or public logs.
Run the FFmpeg relay
This is a command template, not a tested command for a particular station. Replace both placeholders with the station’s approved direct audio-stream URL and the server URL/key supplied by YouTube. Use a visual file you are authorized to broadcast. The example assumes input 0 is a demuxable audio stream and input 1 is a still image.
ffmpeg
-reconnect 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1 -reconnect_on_http_error 4xx,5xx
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-i 'https://STATION-AUDIO-STREAM-URL'
-loop 1 -framerate 30 -i 'station-artwork.jpg'
-map 1:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE-INGEST-URL/STREAM-KEY'
The reconnect options appear before the station input because they apply to that input. The final address is a placeholder: use the protocol and server URL shown in Live Control Room, together with that stream’s key. Keep the real key private.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The image input supplies a video track, which this image-based setup needs even though the station source is audio-only. The command maps the image as video and the station source’s first audio stream. If the station endpoint is an HLS playlist, a redirect, a webpage, or an authenticated feed, this exact input pattern may need adjustment; use the station’s approved access method and test the real media endpoint before going live. FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes the reconnect options used here, but installed-build support and endpoint behavior can vary.
Choose compatible settings and test the preview
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264 among video codec choices, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding in its encoder settings guidance; it recommends RTMPS. For stereo audio, YouTube’s recommendation is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. The example uses AAC, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps to follow that audio recommendation. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or setup will work unchanged.

- Start the FFmpeg process and wait for the stream to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview before making the stream public. Confirm that the image is visible and the station audio is present at a suitable level.
- Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then check the resulting live player and the stream’s audio/video quality.
- Keep the process and stream under observation. YouTube advises testing, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring quality; its streaming tips recommend available upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom.
Keep the relay running and recover from interruptions
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol supports reconnect controls including reconnecting on network errors, selected HTTP errors, streamed inputs, and end-of-file. The options in the example can help a relay recover if a connection drops or an endpoint reaches EOF. They do not guarantee uninterrupted service: a station may reject repeated connections, require authentication or headers, or stop serving the feed. Keep an operator able to check the process and restart or investigate it if recovery fails.
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg cannot open the station URL: you may have supplied a webpage or player URL rather than a media endpoint, or the feed may require an approved access method. Identify the direct stream URL with the station and test that endpoint. Do not bypass access controls.
- No audio in the preview: confirm input 0 actually contains an audio stream and that the selected station feed is playing. The example maps the first audio stream with
-map 0:a:0; adjust only if the endpoint’s actual stream layout requires it. - The video encoder is unavailable: the installed FFmpeg build may lack
libx264. Use a compatible video encoder supported by your build and verify it produces a format accepted by YouTube. - The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: check that the channel has live streaming enabled, then verify you copied the correct server URL and stream key for the stream you created. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The relay repeatedly disconnects: check the station endpoint’s connection policy and your network, then review FFmpeg’s output. Reconnect options can retry eligible failures, but the station may require a different approved connection method or an operator restart.
- Playback stutters or quality is unstable: check outbound capacity against the total stream bitrate and preserve the recommended 20% headroom. Monitor the preview and live output rather than assuming a successful initial connection means the stream remains healthy.
- A rights or policy issue appears: stop and resolve it with the station and relevant rights holders before retransmitting. A successful technical test does not establish permission to broadcast or archive the programming.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to keep an FFmpeg process running on a computer you manage, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live radio endpoint or camera feed, so use it only if that fits your authorized content and workflow.
