To recover from an interruption, also enable reconnect or retry in your encoder, if it offers that feature. These settings solve different problems: YouTube Auto-start does not reopen an encoder that has crashed or stopped.
Choose the fix that matches the failure

Enable YouTube Auto-start and check the encoder connection

In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select an existing stream or create one. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains Auto-start and Auto-stop.

Open the stream settings and enable Auto-start. When the encoder sends a feed, YouTube can start the broadcast without you manually starting it in Studio. If you reuse stream settings, check that the option has carried over.

In the encoder, confirm that the YouTube server URL and the correct stream key are entered. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover these connection details. Treat the stream key as private; if you refresh or replace it, update the encoder with the new key.

In the encoder’s settings, enable its reconnect, retry, or equivalent option if one exists. Consult the documentation for the encoder you actually use: there is no single setting name or behavior established for every encoder.

Run a private or unlisted test before the gaming session. YouTube recommends testing, choosing quality appropriate to your connection, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health and messages. See its live streaming tips and encoder settings and stream-health guidance.

Test the recovery path before you rely on it
Test with the encoder, connection, audio, and movement you expect during the actual stream. Confirm both that the encoder resumes sending and that YouTube receives the feed; seeing Auto-start enabled alone does not prove encoder recovery works. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and during the event.
If continuity matters enough to configure a backup encoder, test the failover rather than assuming it works. YouTube’s live streaming tips describe a failover test that stops the primary encoder or disconnects its Ethernet cable, then checks whether playback rolls over to the backup. That is a test of a redundant setup, not evidence that a single encoder will restart by itself.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not come back
- YouTube does not start when the encoder sends video: Check that Auto-start is enabled for the selected stream and that the encoder is sending a feed to the intended YouTube URL and stream key.
- The encoder reports a connection or startup error: Verify the server URL and key. If you refreshed the key, replace the old one in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering these details. If the software signs in directly instead of using a stream key, YouTube directs users to the software provider for help.
- The encoder remains open but does not reconnect: Check whether that encoder has a reconnect or retry control, review its own documentation, and test the behavior. YouTube Auto-start cannot supply an encoder-specific retry feature.
- The encoder application closed: Auto-start cannot relaunch it. Configure a separate process-restart mechanism or a tested backup encoder if you need recovery from an application exit.
- Disconnects continue after recovery is configured: Check upload speed, choose a quality appropriate to the connection, and monitor stream health and messages. YouTube recommends these checks in its encoder settings guidance.
- You suspect a power interruption: Diagnose the power issue first. A UPS may help keep equipment powered during an outage, but it does not relaunch streaming software.
