To rotate multiple gaming VODs on YouTube Live, use an encoder or playback tool to play the files in your chosen order and send them as one continuous live feed. YouTube receives that feed; selecting a YouTube playlist by itself does not turn uploaded videos into a live rotation. The exact playlist, loop, and transition controls depend on the tool you use.
What you need for a VOD rotation
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled. YouTube’s eligibility and restriction details are on its live streaming getting-started page.
- Gaming video files you have the rights to broadcast, plus an encoder or playback setup that can play them in sequence and keep sending video continuously.
- The stream URL and stream key for the YouTube event. Treat the key like a password; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Enough upload bandwidth for your full stream bitrate, with headroom for fluctuations.
YouTube documents encoder streaming, event scheduling, and encoder settings, but its reviewed help pages do not document a built-in multi-VOD rotation control. The rotation and looping configuration therefore belongs in your encoder or playback tool, not in the YouTube playlist interface. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up and start the rotation
- Confirm live access. Check that your channel can stream live and that there are no restrictions preventing the broadcast. If the channel is not eligible, resolve that before preparing the event.
- Prepare the VODs in your playback tool. Add the gameplay files in the order you want them played. Configure the tool to continue to the next file and, if desired, repeat the sequence. Set transitions or gaps there as well. These controls vary by tool; YouTube does not prescribe a universal playlist setup for third-party encoders.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream, or schedule one if you want an upcoming watch page and reminders. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the setup and scheduling flow. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event.
- Connect your encoder. Enter the event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Verify that the correct event and key are selected before sending video.
- Rehearse before going public. Start the encoder feed and inspect the YouTube preview. Check that the first file is correct, audio is present and balanced, and the order and transitions work as intended. A private or unlisted test can help catch problems without presenting an unfinished rotation to viewers.
- Check bandwidth and stream health. YouTube recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Its streaming tips also advise previewing and monitoring audio, video, and stream quality while live.
- End the feed deliberately. Stop the encoder when the rotation is over. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a longer broadcast will be archived in the same way. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Choose a playback approach that fits your setup
The essential requirement is uninterrupted playback of the files into one continuous encoder output. Compare possible setups on the factors that matter for your broadcast:
- File order and looping: Can the tool play every VOD in the intended sequence and repeat the list without manual intervention?
- Transitions and audio: Can you control what happens between files and check for silence, abrupt volume changes, or unwanted gaps?
- Unattended operation: Does the computer or device need to remain on and connected for the whole stream?
- Recovery: What will happen if the encoder or internet connection drops, and how much manual attention will restarting require?
YouTube’s guidance supports encoder-based streaming for gameplay and overlays, but it does not establish comparative performance for particular software products. Test the specific tool and workflow you plan to use rather than assuming every playlist-capable player can provide an uninterrupted live feed.

Optional standalone hardware
YouTube’s encoder guide names the AJA HELO Plus and says its optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialist standalone option, not a requirement for a basic VOD rotation. Current price and availability are not established here; check the manufacturer or a retailer before making a purchase.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Using a recording as the source for a live broadcast does not change who owns its content or grant permission to rebroadcast it. Use gameplay recordings and any included music, overlays, or other material only when you have the rights or permission required. A creator’s VOD is not automatically free to reuse just because it is publicly viewable. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and restrictions are described on its getting-started page; check current platform rules for your channel and content.

Troubleshoot common rotation problems
YouTube shows no incoming video
- Check that the encoder is running and is configured with the server URL and stream key for the intended event.
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the event is active or correctly scheduled.
- Inspect the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s stream preview before making the event public.
The rotation stops after one file
- Look for a playlist repeat or continue-after-file option in the playback tool; YouTube does not control this behavior.
- Check that every file is included in the sequence and that the tool can read each one. Test the complete list before leaving it unattended.
A file is missing, out of order, or has an awkward transition
- Recheck the playlist order and file references in the playback tool.
- Preview the transition between each pair of files and adjust the tool’s transition or gap behavior where available.
- Listen to the beginning and end of each recording for silence or abrupt volume changes.
The stream is unstable or drops
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload capacity and preserve the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- Check stream health and network conditions during the broadcast. If the feed has stopped, inspect the encoder and connection before restarting it.
The archive is not available after the broadcast
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise the same automatic archive behavior for streams that run longer, so plan the session length accordingly.
