The encoder and computer must stay running, and you should test the full loop and monitor the broadcast before leaving it unattended. If you need a YouTube replay, plan around YouTube’s warning that broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; YouTube’s current getting-started guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. YouTube live-streaming tips
- A prerecorded gameplay file or playlist you have the rights to stream, including any music it contains.
- An encoder that can send the file or playlist as a live video feed. YouTube supports encoder workflows for gameplay and overlays; you do not need a capture card just to send an existing video file.
- A computer and dependable internet connection that can remain on throughout the broadcast, unless you use a cloud streaming service.
A prerecorded loop is still a live broadcast from YouTube’s perspective: the encoder sends a live feed to YouTube Live. Selecting the Gaming category does not turn recorded footage into live gameplay or change rights and monetization requirements.
Set up the overnight broadcast

Check the recording and rights
Confirm that you own or have permission to broadcast the gameplay recording and every included element, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require the necessary rights for live and archived material. Being the person who recorded gameplay does not necessarily grant permission to use a game’s footage or soundtrack commercially.

Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
Set the title, description, privacy, and stream type in the Live Control Room. Choose Gaming when the stream actually features gaming content, and describe the prerecorded nature accurately so viewers are not misled about what they are watching. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder
In YouTube Studio’s stream setup, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding streaming fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not display or share it, and reset it if it may have been exposed. Start the encoder and wait for the incoming video to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Configure the video to repeat
Choose the prerecorded file or playlist as the encoder’s media input and enable its repeat or loop option. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to connect an encoder, but does not prescribe a particular encoder’s looping controls; labels and steps vary by software. Before going live, let the media play through a complete cycle and check that the transition back to the beginning does not leave a black screen, silence, or an unintended gap.

Preview and test before leaving the stream unattended
Check the Live Control Room preview for picture and sound, then confirm the public or unlisted watch page plays as expected. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time, checking access from channel and watch pages and mobile, monitoring audio and video, and verifying any local recording is being saved. Keep the computer, encoder, and network connection active for the whole broadcast; a sleeping computer or interrupted connection can end the feed.
Choose a broadcast length with the replay in mind
Continuous availability and a complete YouTube replay are separate goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The threshold is a warning, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. If the replay matters, save a local recording and consider ending and restarting the broadcast in sessions shorter than 12 hours; check the resulting archive afterward. Archive live streams

Copyright and monetization risks for prerecorded gameplay
Copyright can interrupt a live broadcast
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if the material remains. A licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review Copyright issues with live streams and resolve rights issues before leaving a stream running overnight.
Gameplay monetization depends on more than the category
YouTube says monetization of game footage can depend on the publisher’s commercial-use terms. Its guidance notes that gameplay may be monetizable when commentary is directly tied to the action and provides instructional or educational value; simply showing gameplay for an extended period may not be accepted. An unattended loop is therefore an uncertain monetization proposition, even if you made the recording. Video game and software content

Repeated content is assessed at the channel level
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other formats. A July 15, 2025 policy note renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible; reused content is a separate policy. This does not establish that every repeated stream automatically violates policy, but looping alone should not be treated as proof that a channel meets monetization rules. - No preview in YouTube Studio: Check that the encoder is using the server URL and stream key for the intended stream, then restart the encoder and wait for the incoming preview.
- The stream stops when you leave: Check that the computer has not slept or shut down, the encoder is still running, and the internet connection remains active. Test these conditions before relying on an overnight run.
- The loop pauses or shows a blank screen: Verify the encoder’s repeat setting and run the file through a complete cycle while watching the output. The exact loop control depends on the encoder you chose.
- The broadcast is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Check for a copyright match and remove or resolve the affected third-party material. If you have a licence, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration. Broadcasts exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; use a local recording backup and verify it is being saved during the stream.
- The stream is live but viewers cannot access it: Check its privacy setting and open the watch page from a separate device or account. YouTube recommends checking access from the channel page, watch page, and mobile before the event. YouTube streaming tips
